What great field Trip. Thanks Joe. Pyrite as you know is iron sulfate. The shale is the Chattanooga Shale which is a geologic formation in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri. Oklahoma and Tennessee. Most of the Chattanooga Shale is Devonian in age - 420 to 370 million ages ago. The iridescent material is hematite, also called rainbow hematite, displays a variety of beautiful interference colors It is iron oxide. Much of the shale is covered with red and yellow iron oxide (rust.) Bill Reynolds
Gorgeous!!! I'm a huge fan of anything iridescent. That looks like an amazing spot. Wish I lived a bit closer it's just a little bit too far for a day trip.
Yeah, it's right at a half an hour from my house. We had some rain come through yesterday and this morning, so I'm guessing it'll be easier to find more of it after a lot of the dirt had been washed off from all of the construction dust covering everything.
