Mallet heads are generally pretty heavy and so the center of gravity is quite close to the head. Putting a head on the other side would move the center of gravity to the middle of the mallet and would make playing quite a bit different, including increasing the amount of force/effort it takes to play.
I use fiberglass two-steps and the rubber ball fell right off the end during a solo. After the song I told the audience "I'm terribly sorry, one of my balls flew off."

When something like this happens, the trick is to stay calm and mix in some humor.
Tim, why not put a ball on each end of the stick in case something like that happens? Would the additional weight throw you off?
