Haven't you heard of the story, in Sunni books, where Imam Ali( ع) was leading the prayer. Then two people said that specific prayer reminded them of the Prophet Mohammad's ( ص) prayer. It shows that the previous Khalifs were not praying the way ProphetMohammad( PBUH) did. If prayer, something that is done few times everyday, is distorted to that extent in few years not few hundred years, how could you be sure that other things you do is exactly what Prophet( ص) did? In addition, he does nothing on his accord, it will be Allah( ج) order and command. Did the second Khalif know more than Prophet Mohammad ( peace be him) that did not allow him to write something that would help the humanity to not go astray? Prophet Mohammad ( peace be upon him) did know that what he was going to say would not be something that leads to forgetting the Holy Quran. That are millions and millions of things that we could be doing wrong regardless of what Islam sect we are following
