A Salt and Peper grinder can be a fast and simple gift to make. if you have a lathe it can be made even faster, but you can still make it without a lathe. it is amazing what an octagon can do and how easy they are to make. so here is a no lathe salt and pepper grinder.

WoW!!! I didnt even knew that one should season the workbench from time to time.... live and learn!!
“Marking gauge video next week”
Me barely a minute and a half into making shakers “make it be here, now!” Lol! I’m really excited for next weeks video already, just reminded me of patten Oswald’s green lantern sketch.
That walnut looks well seasoned, and now so does your bench!
Damn those look nice !!! They are simple and elegant !!!
Looks terrific James!
I like the octagonal quite a bit better than the turned ones. Great work, James. Nicely done. Oh, and the saw file in the groove was perfect.
Love it! Thanks James!
I like the sides rather then a round one! Great job
Really amazing work, James! 😃
Thanks for all the tips!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
32 of them and you could have a chess set for your cheese board and fill them with spices just to spice up the game a little. Lots of wood though. LOL. Love the simple but elegant look of those. Nice one!
I like the way you think.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Loose a piece in the chess game and you get a hotter spice on the cracker and cheese as a forfeit. Or a random shake if you can't recall what spice is in which shaker! LOL.
Thanks so very much, James.
Wow beautiful job!
Gorgeous .
Awesome!
I like the octagon better than round. Then corners on an octagon provides a better grip and fits the hand better.
Never mind I don't have a lathe.
You used the basic set with just the grinder bits here, right? I'm thinking ahead for Christmas ideas.
Weekend first!!!!
Now you can grind your pepper with a grain of salt.
Scrap from Cremona? I need to up my game if that is on the scrap pile……
He deals in very large pieces of wood. Lol
nice build Mr James , good to see a complete build.
Question on BLO. (apart from the obnoxious odour) used it properly 1st time on pine, once polymerised& dried, it appears to have a deep surface impregnation into the wood. Left surface beautifully smooth, no need for varnish!. & no brush strokes in the finish.
Is it good enough to provide all weather protection to oak for outside use?
if necessary can i varnish ovet the top? would you say yacht varnish or water based polyurethane?
It does not work well as an exterior finish. It washes out pretty quickly. But yes, you can code it with a marine varnish or polyurethane. If using a water base polyurethane you want to make sure it's fully cured first. Or you could apply a thin coat or shellac in between to bind the two.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Great info thank you. Would you 7se it for a kitchen worktop or it wash out also? And use hard wax oil instead?
Did the interiors of both the salt and pepper compartments get the BLO and paste wax treatment? or just the BLO? Thanks.
Just the BLO on the inside.
Have you ever run into a problem with the salt drying out the wood causing cracking?
I have not.
James, do you need to worry about wood type for this? For example, Rosewood is oily. Will that be a problem for pepper or salt to be stored in? Do we need a different finish on the interior in that case? Any other woods that might taint the salt or pepper? Want these to be food-safe and not go poisoning family by using a dangerous wood. Thanks!
Engine will know the small amount of contact would not be a problem for wood types. Even with the most oily woods they're not oily to contact as you would think about it.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Great, thank you!
Can you do some projects with the laith? I think that will be fun, also to copy, if you dont mind
I've done quite a few lathe projects in the past. It's not my favorite so I don't do it very often, but every now and then it comes out.
I thought you had these adjustable auger bits, will they not do that large diameters?
Those can work. But they can also be an extreme pain. They also don't cut a flat bottom.
