I'm 47 years old and just starting cycling this year. I was gifted a beach cruiser and I'm having the time of my life. I hadn't ridden a bike since my preteen years.
I haven't used a bike regularly since high school (34 now) and I just bought one of these yesterday at Walmart, a Kent Seachange. They had it marked down to $98, and this one had no loose, crooked, or rusted parts. My car is now inoperable and will cost at least a couple grand to fix with all that's broken in it, so this was my only way to get around besides walking. I like the aesthetics of it more than mountain bikes, it's faster than walking, traveling at night is now more interesting, and yesterday I was forced to explore places I've never been before to find more bike friendly routes to the places I need to go. Riding through a historic district was beautiful. I already almost don't want a car again.
In my youth I used to ride road bikes and mountain bikes. Then I grew a little older and had some health issues...I decided to start riding a cruiser bike. It's been 12 years now and I am still riding my cruiser. They are awesome if you are not in a rush and want comfort and simplicity. I don't care if I have to get off and push up a few hills.
I bought a beach cruiser in 2018 when I got my first job. Still have it at 33. These are great bikes! Even though mine was in storage for 10 years it only needed some air in the tires and some oil. Very low maintenence, highly recommend this style of bike to anyone looking for a low-maintenance bike that's fun to ride.
I recently came by a step through cruiser after being sidelined with some pretty severe health issues. Mine ended up being a Priority belt drive with a 7 speed internal Nexus gear set. Extremely light for a cruiser and fairly high tech as cruisers go, but what fun. Thanks for this video my friend. I am all about the very low maintenance required for these bikes and the simplicity/fun that these rides provide. Full fender set, internal gears, coaster brake and a rust/grime proof belt. What's not to love about these simple machines? Let the 20mph road bike guys sneer. These bikes are too much fun to pass up.
Bikes have changed. My 25 year old Electra beach cruiser has an aluminum frame, steel fork, cantilever brakes, 7 speed rear sprocket for hills so less zig zagging or walking up cliff trails and roads from beach. Some new beach cruisers now have safer disc brakes and even have electricpower assist motors to get up hills from the beach. Trek bought out Electra and has done well with the Electra bike's innovation. Yesterday I got a new chain, new wide alloy handlebar, and leather designer grips to replace salt rusted worn sun damaged parts. New weight limits on Trek bicycles. 275lbs for most drop handlebar and 300lb for flatbar and flat foot bikes. For me the safest upright bikes for most surfaces such as old overgrown broken roadways around islands, shipyards, bases, rail tracks, rocky or hardpack dirt fireroads, gravel, weeds, expanded metal bridges would be those that have general purpose gravel tires about 40mm width. Also for safety and handling disc brakes for hills, loose or uneven surfaces. The best all around bike for hills, islands, trails most bad surfaces around my home would be the drop handlebar gravel bike Trek Checkpoint also the safest. And the flatbar gravel bike Trek FX Sport. Both bikes have upright riding position with disc brakes and cushy stable 700x40mm tires. And a more comfortable narrow long distance saddle compared to my soft leather spring cruiser seat. I am disabled unable to walk much. My flat foot beach cruiser has wide over 2" tires for both road and dirt. Perhaps best to test ride bikes on bumpy hilly roads. I will test an Electra single speed disc brake cruiser when local shops have it in stock.
Nice video. I've riden mountain bikes for years. Recently switched to single speed. Now I want a beach cruiser because it's simple and I can turn it into a lowrider style bike. Thanks for this video. RESPECT.

I love my beach cruisers. Bought them from people not Wal Mart. One was made in a custom shop near Oceanside Calif. very nice bike. I did have to do some work on it, but was amazed how much there is to learn about bikes. I like the large cruiser bikes with bigger wheels. The larger the tire the faster. Plus cruisers are made like that for comfort. Great bikes!
YES! There's a lot to learn, but anyone can learn if they just put a little time into it! I love my cruisers so much, and it's amazing how much you can do to customize a cheap off the rack bike! Thanks so much for watching!!
I had a Schwinn cruiser when I was a kid.. I absolutely adored that bicycle. As a kid, I always wanted a 5-Speed Schwinn Cruiser. As an adult in my 50's I have 4 classic Schwinn Cruisers.. Now I'm looking to buy classic Schwinn Crate, and Muscle bikes..
I'm getting my cruiser soon am so exited!!!! it took me a long time to find one online especially in this time of crisis, and riding a bike around town will cure ma boredom from staying home for 3 weeks straight
Excellent! You are going to love it. Great way to safely get some exercise as long as there aren't massive amounts of people riding around you. It's helped me keep sane for sure!!
I have tried a lot of bike but with this cruiser bike I find myself more comfort in riding and so relax u can really enjoy ur ride.. u r ryt there with u say this kind of bike is not a problem for those with back, knees and wrists issues cause I experienced it myself. I got got my cruiser bike about a month now second hand and I really like riding it... BTW new sub here from Phils. 😊

I just got a hybrid Discover Schwinn, step through. And I already got a 2013 New Belgium Brewery Bike cruiser. And I love them! I started with kmart’s MTBs, like Huffy and Mongoose, since 2005 for commuting to work. But now that I change to a more comfortable bike, it is a much better experience. Here in Puerto Rico there are no bike lanes (only some recreational lane at parks, or one at the capital city) and there is an widespread car-centered-culture, so walking or cycling is rather difficult. But I like the benefits of using the bike, for me, my pocket and for the environment. Thanks for the video! Salute from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🚲
Both great bikes! Schwinns are built a bit cheaper than in the past.. but super easy and cheap to do upgrades. I wish I could ride my bikes more here in Florida, but it also is not very bike friendly. Fortunately, my neighborhood is pretty safe and.. there are tons of bike trails. BTW.. Mi esposa es Boricua.. Hello i am looking to start biking as my new hobby and wanted to thank you for making me think that a cruiser could be for me. I was always thinking a road or hybrid bike but this opened my mind to another alternative. BTW the Yellow Bike is beautiful !!!
Thanks for your kind words friend! Riding Beach Cruisers really makes my heart feel full. I'm sure it could have the same effect on you! Thanks for watching!
A DILF after my own heart!!! Beach cruisers are just beautiful! I haven't used a bike in over 30 years so I will be getting one (I hope!) before the year is out, but getting a cruiser of any quality is so expensive these days...
Aw thanks! Yes.. any kind of bike is hard to find right now! (Especially Cruisers) I have a sneaking suspicion once more people get back to work.. we'll see more second hand bikes flood the market.
I'm 50 and my wife is.....less than 50 😏, and we have the Electra Townie Cruisers and we LOVE them. She bought hers, and when we went to pick it up I rode it around the parking lot of the bike store - 3 minutes later I was in the store buying my own. Best and most comfortable bikes we've ever owned!
I have a Firmstrong Urban man Deluxe with springer forks and Brooks B190 saddle. It weighs a ton and it squeaks over every bump but I love it. It’s like riding a lazy boy recliner. I also have a Firmstrong Chief that I modified with a monarch type springer fork and Brooks B33. Looks like you have a great collection of rolling art. It’s not hard to get carried away. Guess there’s worse things to blow money on.
I was on vacation at the beach several years ago and rented a bike. I was hooked!! I spent every minute I could on the bike and cried when it came time to return it. My problem is that I live in the mountains so a single speed cruiser probably wouldn't be the same here. Plus theres no sand ;-).
nice video helpful for sure,i did not know the width of tires on a crusier makes such a difference, please do more and where do you consider you should by a cruiser at ,bike shops, box stores , target ????
Thanks fro this video. I've been an avid biker all my life, (road and mtb) but have always harbored a secret obsession with cruisers. I too love the aesthetics and the simplicity. I have had a Felt 1903 for many years and have ridden it on a few bike tours much to the shock of the roadies. I do find that many affordable cruisers are made too small for adults and of not the highest quality parts. I love your collection of bikes, but do you find the same thing? I love the idea of a bike youtube channel devoted to cruisers, please keep posting!
Thanks for the kind words John! I plan on doing a couple more videos very soon! Yes.. the bikes are built cheaply and sometimes too small these days. But.. if you can find a good fit, they are both simple and affordable to upgrade! I may have to do a couple videos discussing some of these upgrades. Also.. Felt bikes are great!!
I want to built a ultra long, low stretched cruiser, but still have a rear derailleur so I can take hills, also having no brakes or just 1 is a big no no. I mainly want the looks with some practicality.
love this video! getting into beachin' after reviving my cruiser from when i was 16, im a 31 year old father now :) i did try to actually drive it down close to the water but all my air was completely blown out of my lungs and i was worn after a few minutes from driving in sand, it was difficult! should i get fatter tires? any tips? awesome collection
You can only go so wide on the tires.. but a bigger rim will hold a bigger tire. Ever seen those HUGE fat tire bikes? Those are a dream to ride in sand!
I am 58 and have been riding bikes consistently since early childhood. I have my 2 beach cruisers set up MTB style with completely smooth tires, flat bars and narrow seat. Love the frame style and simplicity of a cruiser, but my butt can't handle the upright position. I need weight on my palms, and the long reach of a MTB. People like what they like.
id say a soon to be 62 years old i'k quite a bit older than you are brother. hopefully those bikes can handle a 250 pounder like myself. my back is ate up with arthritus so impact exercise like speed walking or running is outta the question for me at the moment so i'm gonna buy myself a new bike and wanted something less complicated without alot of speeds and gears that can go wrong. i saw on the walmart site some beach cruisers in the $100-$150 range, they are 26 inchers, hopefully i can find something a little bigger than that
I was 265 at the time this video was shot.. so yeah.. cruisers are definitely great for big guys! Wal Mart Cruisers are good entry bikes.. but may need a few upgrades to get more life out of them like tires, pedals, etc. If you're handy.. its no problem at all.
Clearly that is a custom paint job, but I didn't catch the name (brand) of the actual bike. Did you mention it? If not would you please let me know? Thank you. Great video btw. Love your bike!!!
So the yellow bike was a limited edition from New Belgium Brewing, and was made by Electra. I love it and would ride it a lot more, but hate when it gets knicked and scratched as I don't have any touch up paint to match the custom paint job. If my house was big enough.. I'd keep it inside instead of in the garage. 😅
i bought a beach cruiser type bike from REI (Novara Jaunt) about years ago because i needed an upright position after an accident... once my neck healed i switched back to my hybrid,, i wondering since the Jaunt has 26in wheels and 22 gears,, is it possible to change the stem and handle bars.. ive tried riding the Jaunt 35 miles and after 10 miles my butt started to hurt because of the upright position of the handlebars
The easiest way to do both of those things would be to change the wheels. You could get an in internally geared rear hub like a nexus with a disc brake and a front hub with a disc brake. But that would cost more than the bike new. Best thing to do is just find one with a nexus 3 or nexus 7 which include a rear coaster brake, and fit a front V brake to it. That’s what I did. I got a trek cruiser with a Shimano nexus hub and slapped a front rim brake on it. I have one granny gear, one gear for moderate hills, and one for flats/downhill. And the coaster brake is all I need 95% of the time. The front brake is just peace of mind really.
Thanks a bunch! One speed Cruisers are perfect for flat areas, but as your legs get stronger and conditioned.. you'll find that you might want to cruise at a much faster speed at times. That's when three speeds can be a lot of fun! But either way, you can't lose.
I'm 53. I'm just getting back to riding. I'm able to ride my 11 year old's mountain type bike. I just got a Schwinn Largo Cruiser. I tried it out. I fell. I feel like i don't know how to ride a bike when I'm on it! What's wrong here? I can't quite touch the street from the seat when I'm sitting on it if adjusted so I can have a bent knee while peddling.
I'd suggest lowering the seat more. Slightly bent leg is ideal.. but a super low seat where your knee is even more bent is something lots of folks do. That way your feet can get to the ground faster before you tilt too much and gain too much momentum. The good news, is that the longer you ride.. the more skilled youll get at turning and stopping.
I often used to take my one speed Schwinn Cruiser on 10 and 20 mile rides. If you have fairly flat roadways.. I'd say its no problem. With hills.. multi gear bikes are definitely nicer. But also have more maintenance and parts to break and to keep tuned. If I'm in shape.. I prefer one speed cruisers for all occassions. That's all anyone had many years ago.
@@theretrodad8716 There's a really nice path near me that totals at 32 miles. I've taken my 59 Schwinn Catalina (single speed) through it at least ten times. The ratio on that old girl is perfect!
I am 6’2” also and thought i would have a little trouble with a 26” cruiser but its all good. Just put the seat all the way up (but don’t go above the line on the pole). I am fine, I get a full leg extension when pedaling.
I know they have hybrids that are a cross between a Mountain Bike and Cruiser that are 27 and 28's. Those would probably work great for you!! I used to have a 27" 10 speed, and with the seat raised, friends that were 6' 3" LOVED it!!
why is it that only two companies make a cruiser bike with more than Seven speeds how can you upgrade to higher gears like 12 or more speeds for hills ?
The shimano nexus 7 has a gear range of 245% To get 12 useable gears you need to go to a 21 speed drive train with 3 front rings and 7 in the back. Thats 2 sprockets, 2 shifters, at least 9 duplicate gears, and a heckofa lot more maintenance to squeeze just a little more mechanical advantage. With a nominal flat endurance cruising speed of 17mph the lowest gear on a 7 speed hub would get you a 7mph climb at the same cadence. And down to about 5mph at a minimal climbing cadence of 60 rpm. That translates to about a 7% grade, which is quite a steep hill. In a standard 21 speed given a nominal crushing speed of 17mph you’d be able to climb a 9% grade in granny gear with the same parameters. I don’t think that difference is worth it to most riders of beach cruisers who are not regularly tackling a a hill that big.
I grew up in Colorado and used to ride my one speeds up many a hill. I was in much better shape back then of course. But.. if I wanted to climb a hill, I'd simply peddle faster or stand up to pedal, as did most everyone back in those days. Much simpler times.
I'm 47 years old and just starting cycling this year. I was gifted a beach cruiser and I'm having the time of my life. I hadn't ridden a bike since my preteen years.
So much fun! And comforting knowing they're so simple to maintain and repair.

0:43 yeah right.
🤨
🤣🤣🤣
id say a soon to be 62 years old i'k quite a bit older than you are brother. hopefully those bikes can handle a 250 pounder like myself. my back is ate up with arthritus so impact exercise like speed walking or running is outta the question for me at the moment so i'm gonna buy myself a new bike and wanted something less complicated without alot of speeds and gears that can go wrong. i saw on the walmart site some beach cruisers in the $100-$150 range, they are 26 inchers, hopefully i can find something a little bigger than that
I was 265 at the time this video was shot.. so yeah.. cruisers are definitely great for big guys!
Get the 3 speed Nexus hub, it will change your ride forever for the better
Got my eye on that hub. I may get one or use one on a new build down the road!!
Can I fit a rod holder on mine?
Seriously, I live in Sydney and would love to bike to my fishing spots.
Easy! It's all a matter of hardware that attaches to the frame. Have seen lots of them by the beaches in Fla!
i bought a beach cruiser type bike from REI (Novara Jaunt) about years ago because i needed an upright position after an accident... once my neck healed i switched back to my hybrid,, i wondering since the Jaunt has 26in wheels and 22 gears,, is it possible to change the stem and handle bars.. ive tried riding the Jaunt 35 miles and after 10 miles my butt started to hurt because of the upright position of the handlebars
Lol i dont know how to ride a bike but i won one from my elementary school. Im about to learn how to ride mines(cuz its a cruiser)
They are super easy to learn on! Have Fun!
how hard is it to upgrade the gearing on a beech cruiser and to have better brakes
The front brake is just peace of mind really.
can you gear a beach Cruiser for the road and hills?
Oh yeah. Just buy a multi-speed cruiser and you're set!
I agree with you ,not everybody needs titanium carbon fibre high tech crap on $7,000 bicycle
Question...I live in a flat area would you buy a single speed cruiser or a three speed? Great video, Retro Dad!
Thanks a bunch! One speed Cruisers are perfect for flat areas, but as your legs get stronger and conditioned.. you'll find that you might want to cruise at a much faster speed at times. That's when three speeds can be a lot of fun! But either way, you can't lose.
@@theretrodad8716 I ordered a three speed today upon your learned recommendation!
@@resolutestct Nice. Have fun with it! I look forward to doing more riding soon as the weather cools in florida.
I’m looking for some red rims for my black 26” wheeled beach cruiser with a 3 speed hub. Where did you get yours?
Mine came with them. I would suggest scouring the web. There are SO many suppliers out there with Cruiser parts!
Just bought a cruiser bike and I just feel it's a little slow, can I upgrade its chainring to be a lil bigger?
Thinner tires will make it move much faster, also.. there are 3 speed rear wheels you can buy and install which will make them MUCH faster!
the only thing i like about beach cruisers is the style.....i prefer the lighter multi speed mountain bikes.......but with bmx handle bar LOL
Can you add hand breaks to a cruiser.?
Most Definitely! As long as there is a mounting hole in place, it's very easy. I may have to a video on that. Thanks for the idea!!!
The Retro Dad thanks for replying that will be awesome
Yeath~~ I need to turn one of my bicycle into cruiser!
Do you think this is a good commuting bike? Not very long distance 5km at most
I often used to take my one speed Schwinn Cruiser on 10 and 20 mile rides.
When I went to New York City a couple years ago, old single speed cruisers were everywhere.
@@theretrodad8716 There's a really nice path near me that totals at 32 miles. I've taken my 59 Schwinn Catalina (single speed) through it at least ten times. The ratio on that old girl is perfect!
I'm 6' 2 and am having a hard time finding a beach cruiser that would fit me. The 26 inch bikes seem small
The shimano nexus 7 has a gear range of 245%
To get 12 useable gears you need to go to a 21 speed drive train with 3 front rings and 7 in the back.
I don’t think that difference is worth it to most riders of beach cruisers who are not regularly tackling a a hill that big.
slap a BBSHD on these and your golden!!! trust me!
so nice bikes but they only come in single and a max of seven speed and no granny gear for climbing hills
I grew up in Colorado and used to ride my one speeds up many a hill. I was in much better shape back then of course. But.. if I wanted to climb a hill, I'd simply peddle faster or stand up to pedal, as did most everyone back in those days. Much simpler times.
The lack of a handlebar brake scares me
Need ape hangers
You can be my dad
☺☺☺
"10 speed..." You mean road bike...
