Rugby Referee Analysis | All Blacks vs England Autumn Series 2022

  • Again, World Rugby giving me lots of content to work with. They talk about their "Trust-based coach/match officials feedback process", yet Brian MacNeice goes on to TMO the All Blacks vs England game, a week after he had a horrible TMO performance in the South Africa vs France game. How on earth are we supposed to believe World Rugby and their "Review Process" when the same bad officials keep officiating at the highest profile games, even after making game costly mistakes.
    So here is the video on a video of the England vs All Blacks game, where Brian MacNeice directly influenced the result of the game with horrible decision in the TMO booth. The biggest mistake was him lying on live TV about seeing a grounding when there was absolutely no angle that showed any grounding on the try. The original decision was no try, so he had to see "Clear Evidence" to overturn it. The replay showed the ball being on the hand off an All Black player and never touching the ground, the ball the gets pushed back and they show an angle where there is a hand in front of the camera where nobody on earth can see any type of grounding. There was no visual of the ball touching the ground, and what does World Rugby's TMO say? "The ball is grounded" how on earth is that possible to happen in a high profile game like this? Not to mention the double movement before the try was scored. But apparently the Northern Hemisphere ignores double movement, you're allowed to be on your head and elbow and crawl forward, as long as your knee doesn't touch the ground. Then he also misses a clear headbutt by Ellis Genge on Whitelock where they even show the replay, where Genge goes in with no arms makes direct contact with Whitelock's head, and nothing happens yet according to World Rugby's interpretation of head contact, that is a clear red card offence. He also misses a clear no arms tackle by England 2 on an All Black player where he dived into his knees with no arms, they even asked the ref to go to the TMO, and nothing happened.
    So another weekend where the best team on the field doesn't win because the TMO or Ref was horrible. But yeah, let's just trust World Rugby when they tell us there is a "review process".
    Will try and post another video later today on one of the games from yesterday. But will most likely be tomorrow
    Just lastly, there is no conspiracy of referees against South Africa, there is a problem with Officiating and World Rugby in general. Where there is no accountability at all. This weekend proved the exact same thing, referees and TMO are allowed to make crucial mistakes and not face any consequences for their performances. World Rugby is trying to hide it, and this next few months I will expose them for it. This is not something that happens just against South Africa, this is a problem all the teams are facing.

    I was watching the Arg vs Scot game and I was so shocked how the TMO was watching Arg tackles and clean outs like a hawk but Scot forward pass, offside line, and head on head and nothing gets done but if it was Arg then they got called and look how many cards Arg got!
    World rugby is a disgrace at the moment and these refs are favoring the NH teams way too much at the moment.

    Im a Kiwi but most of all I’m a rugby fan.
    I can live with refereeing mistakes.
    but what I struggle to understand is don’t tell us theirs a crackdown on players safety and then on these occasions blatantly miss them.
    So of course a part of me feels like do they pick and choose which ones to penalise because let’s be bloody honest if some of those penalties are given the score is in danger of totally blowing out.
    Example Reiko Ioane scores to to potentially make the score 21-0 early in the first half, TMO intervenes for a neck roll.
    problem with this, players cleaning out while having the arm around the head, neck area of player is common

    • @bigrigjoe5130

      So where was this bias when SA blew out Italy?
      How come this "bias" only comes up when SH teams get beat?
      Honestly claiming "Penalizing a neckroll is wrong because players cheat all the time!" is not a defense of anything. Neck rolls are dangerous and illegal, that's 100% fair. It's the correct call.
      Meanwhile the biggest ref error in that game was the ref giving a knock on penalty to NZ that led to 3 points when the ball wasn't knocked on and came off a NZ boot. But you're silent on that because it went against England. Meanwhile you're complaining that NZ should be allowed to do neckrolls.
      That's simply being a fanboy making excuses.
      Speaking as a neutral fan who loves rugby and watched every game in the series, I simply do not see this bias that only SH fans see and only when their team loses (or draws)
      I just see some fans (not all obviously) being sore losers. Especially SA and NZ fan who aren't happy France and Ireland look like stronger teams right now and so make excuses.
      If I was a NZ/SA fan, I'd relish the challenge of other teams being stronger coming into the world cup rather than pretend they're not and make excuses when we lose.

      These videos doesn't have to be shown for each and every game but only when the outcome was determined by the ref. World Rugby acknowledged that since B&I Lions, 12 tries was either not given to SA but should have or was incorrectly given to the other team. That is 60-84 points difference which boks lost. Still nothing changes.

      @@bigrigjoe5130 I never said there was bias from the ref.
      Okay maybe I can explain what I meant a bit better.
      I have no problem penalising Reiko for a neck roll.
      but neck rolls happen more then once a game.
      I can sense every rugby of their own team when they see a neck roll and it doesn’t get penalised for any team can feel that frustration
      Yes Van Poortvliet didn’t knock that ball on, he didn’t even touch the ball clearly and I was surprised the TMO didn’t intervene on that one.
      But what I brought up has to do with player safety.
      Ellis Genge head on head and no attempt to wrap on Sam Whitelock
      LCD diving straight at the shins(this is deemed a penalty, Shannon Frizell was penalised against Argentina for the same thing in the rugby championship which is the reason I know this rule)
      Mate even Beauden Barrett made a clean out on a English player he should’ve been carded leading with the shoulder and made head contact.

      Also I do believe if the warm up games were more challenging and not playing the same teams twice

      I’m actually one of the very few fans who actually believes South Africa aren’t the best team in the world even when they won the World Cup.

      Yes arms around the neck/head area is common so 3 match bans should be more common and it would stop very quickly. The problem isn't the rules it's the players and coaches not doing what they should do. There is options to clear someone out so there is no need for neck rolling.

    Three comments:
    1. Thanks for the level of analysis. It's cool to see, and with super slow-mo like this, the TMOs need to be on notice that you (and/or others) will do more of this.
    2. Over 80 minutes of rugby, I bet you could also find examples of infractions from the other side too. Doing so would strengthen your argument that the game is not being reffed to the highest standards, versus an implication that the refs and TMO are deliberately lying or cheating to give advantage to Northern Hemisphere over Southern. If you want to make that argument, you need to go a lot further than just picking a couple of decisions you do not like. In fact - you need to demonstrate how far you are going to try to prove the opposite - that there are decisions in the opposite direction that you don't like, that then makes the point for asking for higher standards, versus for cheating.
    3. We all accept that this is a tough physical game, and the players always get away with something, somewhere, with the ref missing and no TMO review. All I want is that the amount of liberty being taken is equal on each side, and that the TMO picks up the dangerous plays immediately. (E.g. your point on the no-arms knee tackles are 100% on point.)

    The Ireland v Australia game at the weekend also raised a lot of suspicions about the TMO. I don't think there was a single review of any incident involving an Irish player but there was a whole sequence of reviews of Australian incidents two or three of which were trivial. Then there was a highly dubious penalty award in the closing minutes which denied Australia their last chance to score. That wasn't reviewed either.

    The argument I suppose for both the tries (Eng and Fra) is that the tackle was not completed at the time as their knees never hit the floor. If the game was refereed with “only players with nothing but their feet on the floor can be involved otherwise they will be penalised”, majority of jackal penalties go the other way, game is far slower. How often do clearing players hold onto the tackled teammate? (Literal first ABs ruck does the player have his hands on the floor...) Potentially it would make the game more dangerous, far less ability to balance yourself at ruck time. If anything, using your interpretation of the intent of the rules, the try should have been a penalty try, as 1) the tackle had not been completed 2) the AB tackler was off feet and out of game and 3) preventing the non-tackled English player from getting to his feet to score the try = penalty try. The grounding of the English try, you can draw a line on your television following the straight white line and you can see the ball is on the ground, so is that really such a contentious issue? The two tackles clearly have arms involved, if pause then you can see this quite obviously. You’re contention is that Cowan-Dickie is trying to cause serious injury to the ball-carrier, that the england hooker is out to end careers? Otherwise I didn’t realise that tackling people around the legs was illegal. Totally agree on the head on head though. It should have been checked and with current rulings would be a red. Perhaps a referral system like in cricket would work?
    Can you imagine trying to ref the England / South Africa game this weekend? It’s going to be a nightmare. Some absolute warrior with the benefit of HD slow motion and being able to pause a frame will definitely be making a video about some things you missed!!

It would seem there is an effort to shutdown Southern Hemisphere teams and favoring the NH teams. As a person with no axe to grind but a true lover of quality rugby I can honestly say there must be an agenda in World rugby to influence results.
    Please keep up the great analysis and submitting of videos to highlight these errors by referring officials. When watching the game at home, I often notice these errors and am shocked that refs standing just a few few away seem to ignore these infractions. It seems that the spotlight has been turned on and the pressure on WR must now be increased and a enquiry insisted on !
    Growing up playing we were taught to not ask questions and just play the game, I can understand that in schoolboy rugby games but with all the technology, three officials + TMO there is no excuse, unless of course there is an agenda behind what going on ! note: with ticket prices where they are now and the bookmaking revenues perhaps we should "follow the money".

      Appreciate there are extra match officials at this level but as referees we must be mindful that this is a contact sport that needs to be watchable. There are too many stoppages already.
      Sometimes games are close and you might feel disadvantaged but in general I would say that as long as a referees is consistent it's not them that decides who wins it's the players on the pitch ... tight games are always at risk of being lost to a last-minute penalty.
      Lastly I take the view that is extremely unlikely but any referee is trying to decide the outcome or be anything less than impartial, the suggestion by some that the southern hemisphere is being refereed out of the game is completely wrong. I'm fairly sure if you were to study these matches in slow motion you could find just as many missed minor technical infringements on either side.

    Read all the comments and the replies and its a mixed bag - some partisan stuff, some funny, some objective and some useful. Thing is: We can probably all agree on a few things:
    1. Officials perform poorly often and all teams are effected negatively at some time or another and sadly, their performance can effect game and tournament outcomes and even player careers / wellbeing;
    2. They are human, sure, and they are integral to the game, sure, but they are sports professionals who are well paid;
    3. Nobody likes whingeing but there has to be accountability for professionals and, it seems to me that there isn't really any accountability (at least that we as fans can see) and I think that's why officiating is such a huge talking point all the time;
    4. World Rugby appears either arrogant or stalinist or just plain head in the sand disinterested in that they don't reasonably act on public / fan / pundit / coach reaction to the ongoing outcry week after week after week.
    I'm sure there are solutions that many have suggested and I'm no expert for sure but World Rugby is squarely to blame for not effectively addressing the elephant in the room.
    Keep going TASanalytics - I think your input is valuable and is part of the noise that must be made about the poor standard of officiating that happens way too often. One thing is for sure - we as fans (who basically fund the game in many ways) deserve better management from World Rugby.

Next year is World Cup how would it feel if the one team loses the World Cup because of a bad decision. World Rugby conceded after the B&I tour, 12 tries was either awarded against SA which should not have been awarded or Boks tries that should have been awarded but was not. As a referee myself. The no arms tackels I can understand why they're not penalties or looked at. I think what the Tmo has suggested is that the players tried to wrap their arms round but couldn't, that's what it looks like to me. If you slow it down you can see both have tried but failed in the process. It's jut my opinion but both players have gone into that knowing they're aiming for low tacke then in the lead up to that they just go through them because both players trip and fall sideways. Then For Ab 15. He tacked the England 10 fine then got to his feet. Tried to rip the ball and was on his feet but was cleared out and two England players ended up falling and landing on him. You can see he tries to get out but it's almost impossible and with the way the England ball carrier has rolled on to the wrong side. This is why it looks like Ab 15 slowed down the ball. For the try. There is no evidence whatsoever. If it was my decision. I would go back to the rule of 5 metre scrum because he was held up. For the tackle on the grouns leading up to the try. The Abs forward has looked at low tackle because he knows that high tackle will cost him and the way he stands for the tackle isn't great because he almost slid sideways and with England player going in low it was impossible for him to get the tackle right and thats why he ended up burrying the player into the ground. I don't think it was worth even a penalty to England because there's no way Ab 15 could get out of that situation. Go back for a scrum and carry on. For the other game. He clearly has moved forward twice and shouldn't have been a try
