It's Saturday night, you live up the street from your friend/s/o Bucky who simply refuses to come out with you. You knew each other in the 40s, he was the life and soul of the party then...Guess he's still adjusting to modern life. So, entirely fed up of his insistence on locking himself away like a hermit you do the only thing you can think of - let yourself in. It's pouring down outside, you hurry through the building and up the steps to his apartment, taking out the key he gave you (which he insisted was only for emergencies) and unlocking the door. It's poorly lit, maybe he's asleep...Quietly, you close the door behind you and make your way towards the open kitchen/living area. So far so good, that is until you trip over a pile of blankets and pillows lying on the floor next to the couch. You stumble into the kitchen where a slightly bemused, slightly annoyed Bucky is standing at the fridge. "Hello, how are you!?" He says sarcastically, "Sorry I was trying to be quiet I-" "What are you doing?" "You wouldn't answer my calls Buck, I just wanted to check on you - I know what you're like." "Please don't" he retorts. You wonder for a moment if he's genuinely annoyed before he reaches into the fridge and passes you a beer (or non-alcoholic drink!!), guesturing towards the living room. You smirk, knowing under all the sarcasm he's happy to see you. "I swear, one of these nights I'll get you out dancing again Buck...Saturday night used to be our night on the town! Look at us now we've gotten so old..." you chuckle and he follows you through from the kitchen. "I haven't danced since 1943" he says, shaking his head. You smile with a hint of sadness, knowing that's his way of telling you he's not ready to go out again yet, he's still adjusting. As you come into the living room you set down your drink and pick up the blankets you tripped over. "I see you're sleeping on the floor again," you bemuse, throwing the blankets and pillow onto the couch, "did you have a nightmare?" "I didn't have a nightmare" he replies quickly...a little too quickly for your liking. "You can talk to me Buck, or Sam...there's gotta be someone you trust enough to talk to." You say, sitting down on the couch and motioning for him to do the same. "I trust people." he sighs, sitting next to you. You give him an incredulous look, taking a swig of your drink. "Come on, are you seriously telling me you're totally adjusting to modern life, everything's sunshine and daisies and you aren't having any more nightmares?" He sits up, setting his drink on the coffee table a little too firmly for your liking before closing his eyes and saying in an exasperated manner, "Give me a break, come on I'm trying okay...this is new for me. I had a little calm in Wakanda, other than that I just went from one fight to another for 90 years" You sit quietly beside him, watching him as he puts his head in his hands. You knew he wasn't okay. Quietly, wordlessly, you place your hand on his shoulder, the simple motion telling him all he needs to know: he's safe with you. "I owe you an apology" he murmurs, "No Buck you do-" "I'm sorry." He says quietly, looking you in the eyes and smiling quietly to himself. "Well, do you wanna talk about...whatever it is that's bothering you?" You ask politely, taking your hand back and sitting in a more comfortable position with your feet up on the couch. "I crossed a name off the list of my amends yesterday..." he says, sitting back, more relaxed. "Who?" "Senator Atwood" You give him a puzzled look before he explains, "She was a HYDRA pawn for years" "...and?" " I helped get her into office when I was the winter soldier." "But HYDRA's gone and you're not the winter soldier anymore" "Well after HYDRA disbanded she continued to abuse the power that I gave her." "Well, I'm sure you're relieved that's over...did she recognise you?" He nodded silently, "What did you tell her?" You asked "I'm not a killer anymore." He replied resolutely. You smiled at him, patting his shoulder again. He looked at you and smiled. "Let's stick the TV on, anything interesting happening?" You reach for the remote and hit the on button, only to instantly regret your decision. John Walker, America's supposed new golden boy is on TV. Bucky visibly tenses up beside you as you watch him, mouth agape in a mix of shock and disgust. ..."That shield? That is everything Steve stood for that is his legacy" Bucky says, his voice shaking with anger. You try to calm him down, "I know Buck but it is just a shield...I know what it means to you, to both of us...Steve wouldn't want you to be upset...Walker isn't Steve, the whole world knows it." "It's just that shield's the closest thing I've got left to a family..." he says quietly, shuffling on the couch beside you. You sit quietly for a moment. Taking his hand in yours, you rub small circles on the back of it reassuring him to continue, "Talk to me Buck, come on..." you whisper. "How are you doing, really?" He sighed, shaking his head. "I've got his book..and uh, I just figured if it worked for him then it'd work for me." "Well, you're not Steve James. It's not a one size fits all kind of deal coming back to the world like we have." He nods silently, his eyes welling up a little. You ask again, more firmly this time, "Are you having nightmares again Buck." He sighs, giving you a sad smile as his answer. "Oh Buck-" "Means I remember...means a part of me is still there. Which means a part of the winter soldier is still in me..." "Hey, you know that's not true. You are Sergeant James Bucky Barnes, army vet, national hero and my best friend...You're one of the good guys." He smiles back at you, taking your hand in his and squeezing it, a little thank you. After a brief pause,he checks his watch and raises his eyebrows, "Well I gotta catch my flight tomorrow..." Not wanting the conversation to move on too quickly, you stop him and look him in thr eyes, "Hey, I'm always here for you Bucky." "Good talk" he replies with a smile. Whoop
