Tank Building: Italian Tanks

  • The Italians were among the first five countries to begin production of tanks. They immediately left their mark in engineering history when they first implemented some new solutions, which subsequently became standard, in the FIAT 2000. The history of Italian tank building is complex and full of battles. This video will tell you about the country's most significant tanks and the peculiarities of the Italian engineers’ approach to the subject.

    The Italian army of WW2 fielded a large group of Self Propelled Guns and Assault gun Tank Destroyers. I hope that these get introduced into WOT.

      Don't forget Itallian Wheelies. But I would rather see all ferrari's removed from the game, instead of more being added. Wheeled 'Tanks'/ Armored Cars are OP. Playing in another light tank is not possible anymore.
      EDIT: Why? Because the EBR kills you with 3 HE shells whilst you cannot even hit the damn thing.

    Don't underestimate those Tankettes, they were also armed with 20mm Solothurn cannon and they were often sent to intercept and destroy british supply convoys before they could reach their destination. They were so fast and small that even the convoy couldn't tell were they were shooting from.

    Italy *_DID_* have a way to fight back and destroy the british heavy tanks, their tank destroyers.
    By 1941 they had already the M40/41 75/18mm Semovente which fired HEAT rounds more than capable of penetrating 120mm of steel.

    • @CaptainGrief66

      RealKull
      Of course they didn't, because you heard that from the same idiots that say italians and french are only good at surrendering and that the allies won all because of the US?
      Italy had a wide range of field guns, the most famous was their 65mm ones which could fire HEAT shells more than capable of confronting anything the allies has, a part from the seriously heavy stuff like the Churchill.
      Italy had a much more powerful cannon that the Germans used: while they had the FlaK 36 8.8cm italy had their 90/53mm armament, with higher muzzle velocity and range than the 88 of a Tiger.
      There were other field guns as well, like the 75/34 and another one with was pretty much comparable to the Pak 40 75mm, but the italian one shot italian-designed EP/EPS sounds (HESH and HEAT).

    Had historians found the reason why the Cruiser, Crusader, Cromwell and Centaur tanks (so all the British medium tanks) had riveted armors as well? It was political? Production? The quality of steel available? The location of the steelworks? The capital "C"? Heck, The Matilda, that had cast turret, had been replaced by the Valentine that had riveted armor as well!

    • @dylanmilne6683
      @dylanmilne6683 4 года назад

      The explanation of this video is daft and dances around the issue. Much of the reason in both cases was cost and technological development. Neither nation had the industrial capacity to produce welded tanks on a mass scale. Welding was expensive and time would have to be taken to implement the technology both in the factories and on the drawing board was too long. Considering both nations always had a lack of tanks, the emphasis was on production using known and existing techniques which suited the small decentralised factories. Additionally both nations tanks were rather mediocre in general performance, upgrading to welding was low priority compared to upgrading reliability, firepower, armour or mobility.
      On the subject of Matilda, it did have better armour implementation yet this was done awkwardly. Matilda was a hard tank to make and needed specialist production. This is reflected when comparing the number of Matildas built to the number of Valentines.

    We made the FIAT 2000, how's it possible that we fkup up tank design during WW2.. Besdies nice video!

    • @DiggingForFacts
      @DiggingForFacts 6 лет назад +5

      First of all, the FIAT 2000 wasn't built until after WWI, so its value as a tank is fairly disputable. The FIAT 3000 was a much more competent tank design for the period as it sought to be a direct improvement over the FT. As for the tank design in WWII, the thing to realise is that most tanks encoutered by the Allies and most of those chassis for support vehicles were developed either in the 1920's or 1930's in a country where the industrial base was barely large enough to keep up with even the peacetime demands of the Regio Esercito. Their efforts were further muddled by the capricious nature of Mussolini's fascist regime. With their attention constantly shifting to the next big propaganda project, the grunts tended to get short-shrift. Italy had some people looking towards modern tactics but they never had the same sort of lucky breaks to get their point across as someone like Guderian had. By the time that it was broadly realised that Italy was far behind in terms of tank design, it had not enough production power, raw materials or political clout to shift and gear up for large scale production of modern designs. They attempted to help combat this issue by upgrading what designs were already in production and by diving into tank destroyers, but again it was a matter of too little too late.

    Interesting that Russian historians say the Sahriano was based on Russian tanks but it has an obvious similarity to the Crusader tank and British historians say it was based on the Crusader; Wikipedia says both were important, but it mentions the BT tanks and anyway both were based on the Christie suspension

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад

      But the Sahariano wasn't.
      As you can see at 19:52 the Suspensions of the Sahariano weren't Christie, but a torsion bar sprung bogie. The system was identical to that of the L3/38 (the last evolution of the L3/33 tankette) only with bigger wheels. axistanksworldwarii.devhub.com/img/upload/uyukuyk.jpg notice how the central cylinder, that connects the two wheels of the train, turns around the torsion bar that's the little cylinder above, twisting it i.imgur.com/fFUOTuF.jpg
      Italians, like Germans, didn't like the Christie scheme, because it widened the tank and was more difficult to service. Italians didn't like the German torsion bar system either, because it occupied space into the hull, so both the L6 /40 and the Carro Celere used torsion bars, but, connecting it to the bogie, they needed only four of them.

    Without the semoventi, the history of Italian tanks in WWII appears to be pretty truncated. They had been by far the most sucessful designs.
    BTW, the C1 having been "developed in cooperation with German companies" and being "based on the Leopard II" is complete bullshit. The only relevant piece of German tecnology in it is the ZF transmission.

Laying mines on bridges and similar bottle-neck locations to make the opponents' tanks exploding by running into my minefields ... I often ended the matches with people trolling at me bad words because of my tactics... lol lol lol They were often caught into those minefields I layied down and their "kill streaks" were sent to hell !!! lol lol lol So they always had to restart again and again the killstreaks that allowed them to level up !!! lol lol lol

    *As always, the issue began when Hitler wrongly believed that all of his military adventures would be relatively volant and bloodless affairs. With this mistaken thinking, Hitler began the war a full six years prematurely. Hitler's agreement with Mussolini was for the Axis Powers not to begin any major military actions before Spring or early-Summer 1945. Mussolini's Italian industrial military plans and import needs had been fully laid-out for Hitler and the OKW. Apparently, neither cared, as Mussolini's quite detailed plans clearly revealed that the Italian military would not be fully marshalled until 1945, at the earliest but, Hitler went ahead with the war regardless. Had Mussolini not been worried about missing-out on the Italian share of the spoils of war and not cast his lot with Nazi-Germany, remained neutral - playing all sides against one another, Italy would have been able to benefit in many different ways and survived the war relatively unscathed. Mussolini had no requirement, or the military ability, to enter the war on Germany's side in 1940 because Hitler had failed to notify his Italian military partner of any of his military intentions; not in Poland, The Lowlands or France.*

      United Brony and when is better against light infantry and light tanks or when it burns in a few seconds after being hit by a 75 mm ?

    • @unitedbrony5907
      @unitedbrony5907 6 лет назад

      noirchat138 , please elaborate

    • @NoirChat138
      @NoirChat138 6 лет назад

      United Brony the M4 is a light medium, the idea was to have a decent tank than the M3 Stuart as a Cavalry and a better tank than the M3 Lee/Grant as infantry support, so it is perfect against light infantry and light tanks or armoured cars but not so good against serious medium tank like a Panzer IV or even a Matilda, cause the slow 75mm howitzer is not good for punching. About the catching fire is because the M4 used a light armour and a light airplane engine so it has a very flammable fuel, Sherman were notorious to become glowing red after they went on fire

    • @unitedbrony5907
      @unitedbrony5907 6 лет назад +1

      noirchat138 , ok in that case it is somewhat a good choice however it still could've been improved in many aspects , the M4 is really meh , a good medium tank would be the M4A3E4 would be good or even the firefly is better

    • @NoirChat138
      @NoirChat138 6 лет назад

      United Brony Italian tanks were a mix of choices, low resources, what we could get...

    All of this false equivalency between UK and Italian tanks - ridiculous! The British tanks were MUCH better.

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад

      When evenly matched, or even in slight numerical inferiority, the Italian tank formations could hold their own and win vs the British ones (see Bir el Gubi for example).

    • @TheLoyalOfficer
      @TheLoyalOfficer 6 лет назад

      LOL - no they could not. Those rare occasions when the Italians stood and fought were only when backed by German firepower.

    • @TheLoyalOfficer

      Yeah it took until late November of 1941 for the Italians to beat the British - lol. Meanwhile, what had been happening for the two prior years of war?

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад

      Are you able to point a battle when the Italian tanks were evenly matched with the British, or had only a slight numerical inferiority, before that?
      I can. El Mechili, 24 January 1941. 145 British tanks vs 129 Tanks and 25 tankettes for the italians, the Brits lost 7 tank, the Italians 9, then the battle stalled for two days, until Graziani ordered the retreat (El Mechili was recaptured by the Ariete division on 7 apr.). It doesn't seem that one-sided, does it?
