Iran. The country they fought was Iran. The location, the terrain, the snow, and the fact that still today Iran has F14s in active services kinda gave it away. [Edit] Afer writing this comment, I fund the video from Film Theory that explains in total detail why it can only be Iran.

Iran is the closest if you were checking off various characteristics, except they don't have 5th gen fighters. But likely it's no country in particular, they writers just needed some sort of adversary for the story and wanted an old F-14 for member berries.
That inclusion of F14 is just for the movie...some way trying to prove our F14 can beat your 5th gen fighter kinda statement.....just for that....other than that , just the fact that it was a SU 57 is very much proof that its Russia... because only Russians have it , plus the icy terrain, Mi helicopters & all are enough
Yet, with Russia buying Iranian drones and short range ballistic missile, Russia is providing Iran 24 Su-35's. Which could mean a possible Su-57's in the near future.

The entire mission makes no sense. 😂 It’s just the Star War’s Death Star mission as a screen pitch literally.

Also, even if F-35s couldn’t fly the bombing missions (they could), they could have been used to take out the SAMs and the air cover as well, leaving the F-18s with no opposition for their mission.
Of course, the Navy would never let that happen. There’s no two seat F-35 to film in, and the actors would never be able to fly the plane themselves.
They can blow up sams back in the Vietnam era, using teams called Wild Wiesels to hunt and destroy sam sites. The mission doesn't make any modern tactical sense, but purely to create the story they wanted. Still good, but in no way realistic.
I think you're thinking of C.W. Lemoine(Mover Ruins Movies) as he's a former fighter pilot, that did a video on both Top Gun and Maverick...or it may have only been Maverick.

Why not? at the altitude he had to be at in order to hit Mach 10 without melting, it would be like ejecting at Mach 3 and the NASA had a Mach 5 ejection seat design as far back as the 1960-70's

The enemy was Iran, the only country on the planet that fits the topography described in the movie and still flies F14s.

@@nivin4787 Nobody has SU 57s not even Russia. Those that are flying around are prototypes that Russia pretends to pass as finished products.

Still the offer was made and with Russia purchasing drones and ballistic missiles from Iran, don't be surprised if the Russians sell them SU-57's in trade.

@@nivin4787 No way it's Russia, you realize it's to stop Nuclear enrichment? Its a country that doesn't have nuclear weapons, which clearly isn't Russia, who has just as much if not more Nuclear weapons than the US. Again, it's no country, its a mixture of various countries.
They kept the enemy country unnamed due to politics. When Top Gun came out in 1986, the Cold War was still happening and the TG filmmakers didn't want to make international tensions worse. Same with TG Maverick, except the Cold War has been over for a while, yet ironically there are political tensions today they don't want to exacerbate.
Why would you assume Russia? Why Russia would have F14s? Bruh.
Ever thought of Pakistan or Afghanistan or Iran who have US fighter planes and can also purchase 5th gen planes from France or Russia or China?
