Also, if you want to tell people about my project, you are welcome to tell them so they can submit a video and we will promote their channel within this project. Just another thought if anybody wants to join. Thanks Sam. Matt
Can I add another tip… Remember, just because you might not be able to see the screen, remember your audience probably can. For example, yes, being in frame is important. The amount of blind/VI RUclipsrs I see (not going to give an examples) who hold the camera pointing it in completely the wrong direction, or face down on a table or toward the ceiling, is a lot. A few mistakes are fine of course, but not bothering to even try and point the camera towards you looks a bit weird. As a blind person who does have remaining vision, personally I don't want to watch a video looking up your nostrils. Also, if you can, and I appreciate that this is difficult so only if you can, but try and make a thumbnail for your video. The thumbnail - if you are unaware which I do totally understand - is basically a small image which is used to show people your video, next to or above the title. Many sighted people don't read the title, only look at the thumbnail, and base their decision to click only on that. You don't want to have a great video but have no once click. I do get though that this is hard if you can't see to make one. Try, and if you can't, don't worry that much. Similarly, you would really want to have a profile picture (and ideally channel art). The profile picture is a really small image which represents your channel. It could be anything: a selfie, a logo (if you can make one), or the default one. Channel art, of banner, is a rectangular, long image, which appears at the top of your channel home page. It is supposed to immediately tell people what your channel is about. Like a thumbnail, but for the whole channel. The thing is, like I said, just because you can't see the screen, remember your audience probably can. With my remaining vision, when I see a channel with default profile picture, default thumbnails, and no channel art, I am very, very, likely to click off and not view or subscribe, because it sets an impression of low quality. Not that your channel IS bad, it just looks bad. So because it looks low-quality, I assume (subconsciously) that your videos will be. If you can't do these things yourself, that's fine. It doesn't really matter, just strongly recommend it. You could get someone to help you if you are struggling remember. It's always okay to ask for help.
Wow I can’t believe you posted this video just now! I have been getting ready to start a RUclips channel for a couple weeks and just a little bit apprehensive because I want to be sure I can continue with content and ability to post them. There are a bazillion crafting DIY RUclipsrs but I will be doing one as a blind crafter.
Thanks, Sam! I use many of these tricks myself. Another thing that drove me nuts in the beginning was getting my DSLR properly focused on me. If for whatever reason you can't use autofocus, it can be super hard to make sure the shot is in focus (I hear it's even challenging for sighted people!). A trick I use is that I get something to sit in my chair - to fill in for me if you will - and then I set up the camera and tripod and use my phone or hand-held magnifier to magnify the LCD screen with one hand while I focus the lens with the other! Another trick is to sit in the chair and lean back so that the lens is where my face would be and then focus on the tripod head! But that requires that you can see the LCD well enough without magnification, so I prefer the first method.
@@annteng0922 interestingly enough I started my own channel and I am still camera shy. That said i feel better knowing i am making cotent people like. I say just try it.
Thank you so much for this video Sam! I’ve had several people suggest that I start a RUclips channel and I think I’ve finally been convinced, but I have no idea where or how to start. Your video has really helped and I think 2020 might be my year 😎
These are some great tips Sam! I hadn’t thought about using audible sounds at the beginning and end of clips. Although, most of my videos are now audio only.
Watching all the way from Kingston Jamaica in the Caribbean. Thank you for this video, I am nervous in starting my RUclips channel, the most important thing is that I start and just have fun along the way and learn. Hope to collaborate with you soon.
Wow, that’s really cool! You should definitely start your channel even though it can be a little scary. At least you will have the beautiful landscape of Jamaica in your videos, so you’ll be doing better than me!
Hey Sam, your videos inspire me to work on creating my own youtube channel. Do you use keyword research, or maybe the better question? How do you come up with topics for your videos? Your secrets are safe with me. :) Make it a great day Sam & family.
Nice job on the video. I actually never thought of using specific audio points to indicate clips, but I think I just might have to try that. For most of my content, I don't do much editing, and I'll show the game or tech without me needing to be on camera. I can do the Wilson thing and never show my face. Haha.
Wow, this isn't what I thought it was but it's very good. I think it's quality content and is full of great advice. (side note: I was looking for tips on how to make videos while being mindful of people who can't see wellz).
Well I definitely appreciate you being considerate of the lower vision community when creating your videos! One thing to do is always be mindful of describing what you’re doing. For example, if you were showing your computer screen and moving the mouse around, don’t just say click the button over here and then go over here. You need to be more descriptive. Click the large red button in the upper left corner and then go to the menu in the upper right side of the screen. Also, contrast is very important for low vision. I’ve been making videos for the visually impaired community for over a decade now, so if you have any questions, please let me know.
Hey Sam thanks for the tips. I’m giving it a crack. And it’s a bit of fun. I love your channel. Who knows maybe in about 10 years I’ll have as many subscribers as you. Ha ha.
Thank you sa mga cherry lips . I'm your blind friend from manila philippines and has asked you that question as well . It's very helpful and maybe maybe i will get the chance to get a new phone as amusing a very low and samsung smartphone so i will get to it for sure i need i'm just here haha hugs and kisses from manila philippines
Hey Sam, this is a great video! Thank you for hitting on all of these points. I will need to implement some of this into my channel :-) I’m not sure if you saw my video from a couple weeks ago, I am doing the self promotional project once again this year, if you would like to submit a video it would be awesome to see one from you! Thanks Sam. Matt
Hey Sam, love your videos, I know that I’ve contacted you along time ago but I haven’t done anything yet, but I’m ready to get going regardless of lack of vision or lack of confidence as far as the visual stuff, one thing I’m wondering is which host company do you use, I’ve been told pod been, Zen cast, and some others, I want something that user-friendly and that I don’t have to do a lot of work with or that someone who helps me doesn’t have to do a lot of button pushing? Secondly I understand the editing peace, who help you with it? Thirdly, getting it to all the directories, that is an issue. And the fourth thing, at some point I need to monetize not just for me, but because I need help doing some of this physical stuff and I might have to hire somebody and pay them anyway would you get back to me, because I’ve been putting off starting it for so long that if I don’t do it at this point it will never happen, and I’m at the point where I’m ready to start to podcast, when will be where I’m teaching and educating and reaching out to our communities, it’s it will be called differently abled the times and seasons of our lives, the second podcast will be interviewing amazing people from all the disability communities, people who are disenfranchised, people people who are professionals or people who have a lot to talk about with the personal stories and a professional journeys in all kinds of things. Like I think I mentioned, my background is in clinical psychology having attended two masters programs so I’m all about people, I’m all about feelings, I’m all about talking about subjects that nobody wants to talk about or where people are afraid to talk about, so I could use some real serious advice at this point, I am signed up for a course that’s helping me with a lot of the stuff as far as the verbal stuff, now I need the physical help, any advice would be appreciated, and thank you for what you do
I have trouble filming when out or showing an object so I was thinking of getting a chest harness and head strap. Is that a good idea? How would you do it?
Great video! It would be very interesting to see you edit videos. I am a new subscriber so I am not sure if you have made one of these videos in the past but if you haven’t, it would be awesome to see how other blind and visually impaired people does their editing. ☺️
No, haven’t made a video like that yet. I’ve thought about it in the past but thought that it might be too boring, just sitting there watching me edit videos! LOL
The Blind Life no, on the contrary, I believe it would be an interesting video to watch. Especially if you talk about how you personally edit your own videos and the struggles you come across. Maybe you can edit a really short video so it doesn’t come out super lengthy. ☺️
Hey Sam! I have watched many of your videos since I have become a RUclipsr myself! Great work! I have SD also! Currently I use my phone or iPad to record videos, but thinking about getting a Camera for the future. Do you have any recommendations? Is it your camera that blurs the background a bit?
Oh man, don’t get me started talking about cameras! That’s definitely a rabbit hole I could go down and get lost in, LOL! The blurry background can be the camera itself but usually is dependent on what type of lens you use. I personally use the Sony a 6400 with a Sigma lens. That set up will run you around $1300 so not the cheapest option. There are more affordable cameras out there. I would definitely recommend doing some research!
The Blind Life Thank you so much! Yeah, I just hit over 100 so I’m not really wanting to spend anything just yet on the channel. Just wanting to know if people out there could use the helpful advice I have and make the channel grow. However, I was just curious if it would improve my success if I looked at the camera. Certainly not wanting to spend too much money though
Question on different but related topic - Is there a site/configuration for individuals with poor vision to use RUclips? The individual I'm help is bed ridden with very limited hand coordination (can only use air mouse w/ with ability to drive coarse movements. They also have limited vision and cognitive capabilities resulting from earlier brain stroke.
Nice video Sam. In your opinion and experience which video editing program is more accessible, iMovie, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro? I am restarting my channel soon and I want to be able to edit videos as easy and assessable as possible.
The only thing I find tricky is lineing up the camera. I use the front faceing camera when I’m filming on my iPhone, but I’m not sure if people can see my face. Any tips on that?
Edvard Navackas hi! I’m not sure if this will be helpful, but hopefully somewhat. If you have your phone on voiceover, you can set it up in front of you and voiceover will say something like, one face, one face centered, one face left edge, one face bottom edge. It will keep telling you that and when you hear it say one face centered, you have a pretty good idea that your face is probably centered in the screen. From there and you can do a three finger double tap to turn off speech, then you can start recording so that your phone will not be talking the entire time you’re recording. I hope this helps :-) MATT
That’s exactly what I was going to recommend as well. The only difference for me is that I have a voiceover set to a triple click of the power button on my iPhone X. Older iPhones can set it to a triple click of the home button. Either way though it’s the exact same recommendation thanks Matt!

Hey there, fellow north Carolinian here, born and raised in Raleigh. Are you looking for an Apple laptop or a PC? For the PC, the actual hardware manufacturer doesn’t matter that much.
