Ladakh has such heavy presence of defence but they are non inteferring and invisible. For us seeing army is assurance safety and our lifeline. Not a single incident of violence i can remember ever. Salute to indian army. Modiji govt has provided electricity to border villages near china which no one did previously. Hopefully modiji will get peace in the valley for our kashmiri brothers. Factually incorrect... It is contested between India, China and Pakistan. Each country has under it's control nearly a third of the territory. It is not a contest between Indian army and political class. I think the reporter is getting it all wrong. It is a contest between conflicting political idealogies - Pakistan being a Islamic state looks at it from a prism of Religion and Islam; India through the prism of secularism and democracy , and China being authoritarian looks at it as part of the Tibetan territory that was once briefly under it's control several centuries ago. Per UN resolution, which is null and void now, the following had to happen sequentially (in this order) 1. Pakistan was to vacate all of Kashmir ( including Gilgit and Baltistan) under it's control. 2. India would then take over the territory with a nuetral observer , 3. India and the neutral observer (UN) would allow the situation to normalize and then have people vote for either Independence, join India or joining Pakistan. Pakistan didn't vacate the territory and therefore the subsequent steps did not follow. Also China invaded Ladakh region of Kashmir and occupied parts of Indian administered territory; Pakistan also accedded some of it's territory (without consulting the people) to China. All this , and the 2 wars that Pakistan lost to India in 1965 and 1971 led to a new agreement called Shimla agreement replaced UN resolution - which by the way Pakistan refused to accept. At a later point realizing that Shimla agreement may be a recipe for maintaining status quo and that Indian territory may never under the provisions be part of Pakistani state, Pakistan wanted (and still wants to) go back to UN resolution but only to the 3rd point. It is also incredible that most Pakistanis quote UN resolution without realizing that the first condition is for them to vacate the territory. Also with a third of the territory under Chinese control it is impossible to look for a solution other than maintaining status quo. Jingoism on all 3 countries aside this is the reality one will have to live with. Politicians in the 3 countries realize this but keep the tensions simmering because it suits them.

I have one question for my fellow countrymen in Kashmir. After looking at the present situation Pakistan is in, do you really want 'freedom' from India? I am starting to see a lot of Kashmiris in other parts of India, and have lot of friends too. They're living life comfortably in other parts just like anyone else would. I say, it's the land that's causing all the trouble and not the people. If we can give autonomy to Kashmir (it's a huge step and the PM should have balls to do it), and have a strong military presence only at the border, rather than all over the streets, that's a start.
The British divided us just because of our religion, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and maybe even Nepali we are all one people. Urdu and Hindi even though some might disagree I think is the same language, one language with 2 standard varieties. Let's just all enjoy our rich and amazing culture together.

john smith although i agree with most of what you have said, we have had huge success in reducing cross border terrorism from pakistan into kashmir recently and the terrorism there is almost leaderless. pakistani interference and rebellion was crushed in the 90s and it will be crushed everytime it gains momentum.though military action has been highly successful, political front needs lots of works and as in the words of our PM, we need to win the hearts and minds of kashmiri people. thats the only way to sort this mess.

Factually incorrect... It is contested between India, China and Pakistan. Each country has under it's control nearly a third of the territory. It is not a contest between Indian army and political class. I think the reporter is getting it all wrong. It is a contest between conflicting political idealogies - Pakistan being a Islamic state looks at it from a prism of Religion and Islam; India through the prism of secularism and democracy , and China being authoritarian looks at it as part of the Tibetan territory that was once briefly under it's control several centuries ago.
Per UN resolution, which is null and void now, the following had to happen sequentially (in this order) 1. Pakistan was to vacate all of Kashmir ( including Gilgit and Baltistan) under it's control. 2. India would then take over the territory with a nuetral observer , 3. India and the neutral observer (UN) would allow the situation to normalize and then have people vote for either Independence, join India or joining Pakistan.
Pakistan didn't vacate the territory and therefore the subsequent steps did not follow. Also China invaded Ladakh region of Kashmir and occupied parts of Indian administered territory; Pakistan also accedded some of it's territory (without consulting the people) to China. All this , and the 2 wars that Pakistan lost to India in 1965 and 1971 led to a new agreement called Shimla agreement replaced UN resolution - which by the way Pakistan refused to accept. At a later point realizing that Shimla agreement may be a recipe for maintaining status quo and that Indian territory may never under the provisions be part of Pakistani state, Pakistan wanted (and still wants to) go back to UN resolution but only to the 3rd point. It is also incredible that most Pakistanis quote UN resolution without realizing that the first condition is for them to vacate the territory. Also with a third of the territory under Chinese control it is impossible to look for a solution other than maintaining status quo. Jingoism on all 3 countries aside this is the reality one will have to live with. Politicians in the 3 countries realize this but keep the tensions simmering because it suits them.

I have one question for my fellow countrymen in Kashmir. After looking at the present situation Pakistan is in, do you really want 'freedom' from India? I am starting to see a lot of Kashmiris in other parts of India, and have lot of friends too. They're living life comfortably in other parts just like anyone else would. I say, it's the land that's causing all the trouble and not the people.
If we can give autonomy to Kashmir (it's a huge step and the PM should have balls to do it), and have a strong military presence only at the border, rather than all over the streets, that's a start.
