The way they can deduce everything intuitively speaks a ton about the design the Super Metroid team crafted. +Raphaël Tremblay Lessard I was thinking the exact same thing while watching this. I haven't played this game in years, and looking back at it, and how these people were learning made me realize how well-crafted Super Metroid is. However, I feel like they could've made the bomb actually useful in that boss fight, though. Maybe it's just my Zelda instincts, but you'd think that the item you get right before a big fight would be useful, but not in this case.
This needs more thumbs ups. I know egoraptor did some really good videos on old game designs with castlevania and megaman. Old games were great, they did not hold your hand, by which I mean it doesn't stop the action every five seconds to pop up a text box to explain how to press A, and make you have to try it three times successfully to get the text box to press B. Simple design choices such as shooting doors to open them. Once you come across it it looks so different, and you are bound to try everything. Even if you think it is a dead end, you will soon find no where else to go and will try the only real power you know, your main attack. Then presenting a similar looking door with a different color makes it so easy to deduce that it is a door to a new area, you are suppose to shoot it, and when you do and it doesn't work, you realize you need something special for it. Hell, even something as simple as putting Mario closer to the left side of the screen and facing him right can make so many new players immediately realize to go right.

R3TRO GEAR I've heard this comparison before with zero mission and the original and I'll say it now: Comparing the original metroid 2 and am2r is like comparing a stale piece of bread to a chocolate chip cookie.
This vid is a proof how Super Metroid's natural tutorial ages really well. Look at how they figured out a lot of the tricks the game has just by situational awareness and the glee of discovery. Meanwhile an acclaimed director of a hack n slash game gets stuck in a room
I was just thinking that... I saw the shotgun and the fire spit, never the beams. I was wondering if I was tripping out for a second there. My memory ain't that terrible.
I actually played this for the first time last year. I’m not new to Metroid I’ve played the prime games. But this is the best game ever made, it’s not my favourite but I can see it is the best game ever. It’s got everything going for it even today.
One of the reasons this game sold and performed so well was because of its brilliant tutorial. It didn't thrust you into a training room. It slowly introduced you to the core game concepts and trusted you to be smart enough to build your knowledge in order to solve problems. There have been videos that have dissected this game's introduction and game development today STILL uses Super Metroid as an example of how to design games with good tutorials.
I know. I mean they should actually have them play Star Fox 64. Just that one in particular. To me, that one was the best and funnest, beside Star Fox Assault on gamecube. Now that I mention it, have they reacted to Gamecube at all?
Thank you guys for making this video! Metroid is my all time favorite video game franchise that I grew up with (born in 1992) and I literally own every single game. I think it's interesting how everybody assumed that Samus was a man but was shocked to see, when they died, that Samus is in fact a strong, powerful woman who is essentially fighting for peace in the galaxy. This is really cool and I think, in it's own way, it is empowering! I really hope that this video introduces others to Samus' journey!
It's a testament to Super's unbelievably tight level design that almost everyone can understand what to do and where to go exclusively through environmental context clues without feeling like the game is influencing their decision making. I wish games still trusted the player like this now-a-days, it's what makes Metroid my favorite series.
Watching these kids play this entertaining. Kinda took me back to my childhood when I played this game non-stop. I can't tell you how many times I ran through this game, only to start another game right away.
I love everything about this. It clearly demonstrates how good Super Metroid is at teaching new players through their own experience rather than explicitly telling them what to do. They all took note of the small spaces that they couldn't get through so when they got the morph ball they knew to go back to those places. Within the first couple of minutes, they've already figured out how progression in this game works.
+TheWaltzingWalker Or FEA on Lunatic+. But personally Id like to see "Teens try to unlock the Princess/Dragoon class(es) in Ogre Battle 64, with no guide." Another good one would be the Couples Mask quest from Majoras Mask 64, no guide. Or beating the Bonus Zone in SMW, or (insert almost any classic game that was actually challenging). Theres a reason I spend more time playing SNES and N64, while my xbone sits a little more than a Netflix streaming device.
This game is so good in it's player progression, e.g. you get the morph ball, then you can go here, you got missiles, now you can go here...all without some idiot popup window saying "You got missiles, use them to open red doors."
@@Bloodreign1 Precisely why I'm sick of these copycats called "Metroidvanias". They never get on the level of either franchise, be it Metroid or Castlevania.

it IS without a shadow of a doubt 1 of the best games EVER!
happy one of them beat the churzo! beast mode activated!
+xylofiso Chozo*?
Torizo
xylofiso Torizo* lol
Yea that would've been disappointing if nobody beat it lol
METROID PRIME NEXT
dude that game is awesome. even I have that game for the GameCube
oh hell yeah
Yes, and/or AM2R. That is, if they have it. Then again you could still find the game and download and play it.
is AM2R good or is the original better? last time i checked trying to figure out where to go was hell on the original metriod for nes. no map have fun exploring an ENTIRE PLANET!!!
R3TRO GEAR I've heard this comparison before with zero mission and the original and I'll say it now:
Comparing the original metroid 2 and am2r is like comparing a stale piece of bread to a chocolate chip cookie.
Cringing every single time they say "he"
+Genesic "O.o am i a girl?" best quote ever
Why how the hell would they know?
Kids in 1986 didn't really know she was a woman either. They are sharing the same experience as those kids.
This vid is a proof how Super Metroid's natural tutorial ages really well.
Look at how they figured out a lot of the tricks the game has just by situational awareness and the glee of discovery.
Meanwhile an acclaimed director of a hack n slash game gets stuck in a room
Came here to say that.
This is the first time I ever seen that beam move from the chozo statue.
+Tech “Nika” Core If I remember correctly, the 2nd statue has the same attack, only much faster.
Lol
Lots of shit triggers in the game and makes it 20x harder than some walkthrus show.
I was just thinking that... I saw the shotgun and the fire spit, never the beams. I was wondering if I was tripping out for a second there. My memory ain't that terrible.
That's cuz they all sucked at it so there's plent of opportunity for the statue lol. I remember getting my ass kicked the first time as well
My jaw dropped when some of them intuitively figured out that the Morph Ball lets you roll under Torizo safely. Awesome.
Lol
I actually played this for the first time last year. I’m not new to Metroid I’ve played the prime games. But this is the best game ever made, it’s not my favourite but I can see it is the best game ever. It’s got everything going for it even today.
Teens React To Earthbound
Yes please thank you
Giygas. **insert Lenny face**
I agree, perfectly!
Eddie Fantasia the game is too precious for young minds
earthbound doesn't get enough love :(
@9:58 space goombas. shes gold.
You're gold
8:26 " I'm gonna use my ball to get to different places "
That's the spirit !
Super Metroid is one of the best SNES games of all time!
31 and I still beat this game at least 5 times A year.
+DragonsEdge84 Hey there fellow 31 year old.
13 and same. Best game ever
Have you tried playing randomized versions?
I can't. I need to save it to once a year. That's how much I treasure this game that I'm that afraid I'll ruin it for myself 😲
i love how they weren't told how to play. super metroid is a prime example of teaching through gameplay
Prime example ha ha ha
@@PrincessShokora2002 metroid example ha ha ha
Can you have them try Star Fox 64? It would be interesting to see them play that. It's fun.
yessssssss!!!!
+Brianna Malone I honestly think it would really interesting 😆
they just had adults who played starfox 64 play the new starfox on wii U
They just had them play starfox zero, I know it isn't the same, but it should count for something.
I know. I mean they should actually have them play Star Fox 64. Just that one in particular. To me, that one was the best and funnest, beside Star Fox Assault on gamecube. Now that I mention it, have they reacted to Gamecube at all?
"I like Retro games cause they are simple"... hehehehhe... says the angry birds generation...
greatest game ever made. period
That girl who was saying "Its like an armadillO" was so funny hahaha, in the part of the jumps "little jump.. Baby hop" XD
"Oh, you know... whenever we need a soccer ball, I'm always there..." GOLD.
Super Metroid is legit one of the best games of all time.
These guys knew a real game.
Some games still do....
Also called Metroid....Dread
@@danielgeronimo5538 a banger game alongside prime remastered :)
Play Sonic '06
+Masterness3x3 A true mastapiece
IT'S NO USE!
TAAAAKE THIS!
I'm in the minority that actually likes that game
+Ed Crespo then you must also be from hell XD
+Ed Crespo why
Dang, if Tori hadn't taken that hit in the beginning when the Torizo showed itself, I think she would have beaten it.
"He"
+Oreo32195 Ridley is male, so yeah.
@@Metalheadyup Except that he was referring to the kids calling Samus a "he", not Ridley.
"So all of this is to save the good of humanity, okay.. i guess it's worth it."
Watching this got my heart pounding like I’m over here fighting Ridley again for the first time.
Watching these kids play this entertaining. Kinda took me back to my childhood when I played this game non-stop. I can't tell you how many times I ran through this game, only to start another game right away.
You can really see how this game teaches you to play through doing. It's gets the point across *mostly* without any text at all.
"Simple" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHHA
+Gabriel Tzukishiro
no
Their reactions were exactly what the creators intended and the same way I felt playing this game. That just shows that this game is truly timeless.
"I love retro games, they're so simple"
**Little did she know, that the game would not be simple**
I love everything about this. It clearly demonstrates how good Super Metroid is at teaching new players through their own experience rather than explicitly telling them what to do. They all took note of the small spaces that they couldn't get through so when they got the morph ball they knew to go back to those places. Within the first couple of minutes, they've already figured out how progression in this game works.
YES! Now just have them do Metroid Prime and I can die happy.
Next Teens React: Have them play Chapter 10 of Fire Emblem Conquest and see if they can beat it in 3 attempts.
Lmao yeah!
LOL
+TheWaltzingWalker Or FEA on Lunatic+. But personally Id like to see "Teens try to unlock the Princess/Dragoon class(es) in Ogre Battle 64, with no guide." Another good one would be the Couples Mask quest from Majoras Mask 64, no guide. Or beating the Bonus Zone in SMW, or (insert almost any classic game that was actually challenging). Theres a reason I spend more time playing SNES and N64, while my xbone sits a little more than a Netflix streaming device.
+Michael Angell ghouls and ghost
+TheWaltzingWalker Make sure it's on Hard Mode at least. Lunatic if you're really feeling sadistic.
please make this a regular series lmao I want to see them fight Kraid
Thirty years. *GOD DAMMIT*
"Why are the platforms so small?!" MWAHAHAHAHA
Would love to see Kingdom Hearts or Megaman X
In honor of Egoraptor, have them play Mega Man X _without knowing the basic controls._
mekhi streater YES MEGAMAN X
lmao when they were like... am i a girl? XD
+blupengu Yes, they experimented the same sensation as us 30 years after.
Super Metroid is still one of my favorite Super Nintendo games.
Aside from Mario World, Metroid is one hell of a game for the 90s
This game is so good in it's player progression, e.g. you get the morph ball, then you can go here, you got missiles, now you can go here...all without some idiot popup window saying "You got missiles, use them to open red doors."
And, yes, canonically Samus is a 6'3" blonde goddess...I knew one of them...curse myself for leaving it at that.
@@itmademesignup9508 The suit is 6'3, not Samus. . Kraid's concept art and the Metroid 2 manual prove it.
ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER!!!
This game is timeless. You will never need to remake this game, because this game gave birth to Metroid's aesthetic and art style.
You do not remake perfection, for all you will do is screw it up.
@@Bloodreign1 Precisely why I'm sick of these copycats called "Metroidvanias".
They never get on the level of either franchise, be it Metroid or Castlevania.
In 27 years, I’ve never actually tried to roll underneath Chorizo’s legs. Wowie.
This is honestly reminding me of why I love the Metroid series. The more items you get, the more areas you unlock.
I want to see them play more of this PLEASE!!!
Super Metroid is a amazing game but its a huge exploration and long game...maybe they will finished this game in a 50 episodes hahaha
Intech36 me too
ITS A GIRL, GET YO VIDEO GAME FACTS STRAIGHT
LOL
I know its a girl myself, but I always call samus a he
when she's wearing that suit.
Now when she's in that other suit...its a different story :P
"damn this is kinda a big game, i thought it was one you just beat right away" yeahhhhhh I thought that my first run on super metroid, now im in love with Metroidvania.
"zeebs"
"can I get a mushroom"
"he"
"like Mario"
"simple"
"I'm like an armadillo"
"space goomba"
Wut.
I know, certain remarks were painful to bear with.
They should play Mega Man X
totally.
Yusss~! Make 'em play the Megaman X series. Please~~~!
And then, let 'em get decimated by the Megaman Zero series too.
+LetsPlayNintendoITA Curse his blizzard attack! And his belly slide too!
This is the best Metroid game if you ask me and one of the best SNES Games every made
One of the best from easily the best generation of gaming.
Spent my first year in the Army playing this game all summer long in the barracks…
i appreciated that they all appreciated it. there's a reason it's considered such a classic. even when put up against the standards of games today, it had all of them interested
