    We are from TX and hs year round. It allows us to take breaks in spring and fall when the weather is great. During the summer, the kids play till about lunch time and then we do school afterwards. That way they get to play with their friends who are on summer break and before it gets to hot to be outside. I feel like they are gonna be inside anyways due to the 100 plus degree days, so we might as well do school.

      @ourthriftyhomeschool  3 года назад

      That is a great idea to do school in the afternoon and play with friends in the morning! I can imagine playing outside is a much bigger challenge living in a hot place like Texas!

    We just finished our 10th year of homeschooling, and we have always done school year round. It has been such a game changer for us bc we take vacation when public school is back in session, take spontaneous breaks when my husband has time off, and it has definitely helped when sicknesses unexpectedly occur. We’ve experienced so many benefits from it, and I agree with everything you mentioned!

    Flexibility was one of the reasons we do year round school, too! We do 4 days a week and leave friday as a fun day (can be playing board games all day or field trips) We will be finishing up this year in the next week or so then take a few weeks off and Start back up mid-july. I read somewhere that since we always had summer off as kids (with public school) we have been trained to always want to spend all summer doing nothing, but in reality the weather in most places is too hot to do much. We'd much rather take off in the fall.

    Yes!!!! I love our year round schedule for all the reasons you stated. My youngest (and only left homeschooling because the rest are grown) does NOT understand why he does school when everyone else is off, so that’s hard. But he sure loves being off when everyone else is in school!

      Yes! There are definitely times they need a reminder of why we do it this way....but they sure appreciate it other times! I'm so glad this works for your too! Thanks for sharing!

    I agree, my daughter gets so bored when she gets days completely off. I Love year- round schooling because we can do smaller bits each day and not stress her out. I feel like it enables her to enjoy learning more. We even do school 6 days a week (with lots of freedom to take an extra day off here or there whenever we need them). She just loves that it’s part of our morning routine.

    Love this! Thank you for the encouragement! My hubby has a similar schedule, and I’ve been contemplating this. Just struggling to figure out how to make it work, as my girls often complain about doing school on weekends, also, during the school year, we do have co-op once a week. We currently use the abeka academy. My struggle is I went to school for teaching, and I have the hardest time of getting myself out of the “typical” education box & being more flexible...even after homeschooling for 4 years (the fall will start our 5th year).

      It is difficult to break away from the typical school mindset, isn't it? Just know you're not alone. The freedom is priceless with this type of schedule.

      I’m so glad this helped! I was the same way for years....had to check all the boxes! And it’s still a struggle sometimes! I do think some curriculum allow you to be more flexible than others, so that might be something to look into!
      (My kids complain about doing school ok Saturdays too when we need to...that’s when they need little reminders about the day(s) we took off during the week 😉)

    First-year homeschooling and we are doing a mixture haha! Taking next June off because we do multiple Vacation Bible Schools, and then my birthday is the first week of July. So mind July - end of May is what we are planning! We are going to try and do 5 weeks on, 1-2 weeks off, and a longer Christmas Break. This was very helpful advice, thanks!! :)

    Thank you so much for your encouragement. Just like many others who commented, I have been contemplating year-round school. I have 3 grandsons finishing 1st grade, and 1 finishing 4th. We are taking off a week or so in July to visit family in an other state. Then back to school. The boys do well with structure, and I think I do too. 2 of the boys are living here with us. My husband has his own business and we have enjoyed the freedom to come and go as we please. Last August we got 1 or the boys, and the other came the first week of August. Hubby has been feeling like he is trapped. But as they have adjusted to us, and grown some, I have been mentioning that they will probably be fine to take along where ever he wants to go. We love historical places. I see that as History on the road! The brother that came to us in November, came after missing 21 days of school in PS. So going by the 180 day rule, we will finish on June 8, because I only took off a week around Christmas. They didn't know any different because they were in a structure. Sorry to be so long winded. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy all your video encouragement! God bless you!

    I’m starting homeschool and my husband has a similar schedule so I’m sure this option will work best for us as well. I can already hear my husbands family taking 💩as they usually regarding us homeschooling and because of our schedule. No one understand those who have families and spouses that don’t have a set schedule and work nights. They expect us to have the same schedule as they do working 9-5

    Great post , this has been my family’s first year homeschooling and I like this idea of year around. I do have a couple of questions, How do you schedule for year around? Do you take one month off and then start the new school semester? Are there scheduled intermediate breaks so you and the kids don’t get burned out ? Like every 6 weeks or I’d just school the whole year through? With breaks as needed? What goes into the decision planning for when that grade level is done? And last question I think ....what is the best month in your opinion to start up. Thanks so much for your advice

    • @ourthriftyhomeschool
      @ourthriftyhomeschool  3 года назад +2

      That’s great!
      I mostly just schedule a week at a time...we take off when we need/want to and continue on. We usually take a week in November for vacation and a week for Christmas, but the rest are just random days when we need it. We always take birthdays off. 🎉
      We take one month off for our summer break....typically I take off June or July depending on when we finish. I prefer to start our new school year by the end of July/beginning of August just so I mentally feel like we are starting earlier than the “school” kids.

    • @ourthriftyhomeschool
      @ourthriftyhomeschool  3 года назад +1

      As for deciding when the school year is done..because we school year round, I set a last day of school cut off. And we are done. If there is any math or language that didn’t get finished, we pick up where we left off when we start the next “year”.

      @@ourthriftyhomeschool Thank you, Thank you so much .... for answering all of my question yes this was extremely helpful. I'm going to start planning for next year soon I think starting in August will be best for us as well, it's pretty much to hot to do anything else and I really do want avoid having the same breaks as other schools so we can benefit from shorter lines & less crowds when we do take breaks this was extremely helpful especially with the flexibility of your break schedule for the in -between months. Since we'll be doing unit studies some units take longer than other's so that sounds like it would work best for my family as well. So grateful for your advice thanks again.

    I think we are heading to year round homeschooling ourselves:) This year we started in September and we felt rushed and behind all year. We are also going to third week of June while all around us everyone is finishing. Do you do anything during the month off or is it a full month off ( thinking reading and math here)? And starting in back in August do you start with all subjects like science and history?

    • @ourthriftyhomeschool
      @ourthriftyhomeschool  3 года назад +1

      Feeling rushed or behind really is an awful feeling!
      Since we only take a month at the end of the year, it is a full month of nothing! Fun and relaxing for me and the kids. When we start in August, we start every subject on day 1. 😁
