  • Drawing a portrait with a stylized/Illustrative feeling to it. Stretching proportions a bit and pushing the angles along with the medium. This sketch took about 35 minutes in real time. If you have any questions, just leave them in the comments and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks for watching!

Very nice. Not entirely sure why but she has the feel of a woman from the 1960's. Maybe because she reminds me of Jackie O. A slightly downward tilt to her face but a penetrating gaze.

Oh yeah, and kind of a film noir vibe in there. Thanks!

I have a hard time drawing as light as you, would it be a difference in skill or the charcoal you use?

It may be the charcoal, I'm using natural willow, and it can be very subtle. Thanks for watching!

I love your drawings. I see you pulling charcoal with both kneaded eraser but also with the blending stump. Whenever I touch blending stump to charcoal, it just seems to blotch it into the paper more. How do you use it to remove charcoal and why it over the kneaded eraser? Thanks!

Thanks Brian, it may be the charcoal you’re using? Soft vine or willow has a powdery consistency that usually will lift off the page fairly easily. Charcoal pencils behave a lot differently. I use the stump when I want to move or lighten the material, but not so aggressively. The eraser tends to give me sharper edges and erases all the way to the paper value. I hope that helps!
