Most mylar and film drumheads are pretty good when it comes to being error free, manufacturing has gotten much better at consistency. In the case of the head having an uneven collar or off center thickness, the Dialtune system will try to compensate - though you can only really do so much with a bad head.

The way the rim is removed is very similar to the mechanism now used on NBA hoops to supposedly speed up changing a net.
