On my property, I am re-foresting with fruit trees after removing all the overgrown native vegetation. I started with standard Peach, Apple, Plum and Pear trees. Now I am filling in the small spaces with dwarf type trees to reduce the time pruning and to get fruit sooner. Asian pears were also added in standard / dwarf / semi-dwarf rootstocks as the type is uknown.. Trees from Big Box stores suck, side branches are larger than the central leader due to improper pruning at the nursery (the steep angle is weak) requiring major surgery. I buy bare root whips 1 meter tall and not take chances with a half grown tree with no roots shoved in a nursery pot.

Sounds like you are creating a beautiful space. Whips are way better in so many ways! I write about that here: orchardpeople.com/bare-root-trees-when-to-plant-them/

Q? Hi Susan, I just planted a Mac and a honey crisp, 10/15, zone 6a FF date 10/19. It has not had a real frost as yet. I would like to make them into small 6" trees. When would I do this, cutting trunk to 3'? Now or in Spring or Summer? Love your show, thankful for your passion.

So sorry for delay! Glad you enjoy the show! No pruning till spring, ok? It’s fall and fall pruning isn’t great for the tree for lots of reasons: orchardpeople.com/when-to-prune-fruit-trees/
