@@video2000_TV It's a matter of personal opinion. I personally haven't given Cyr enough time. I'm into different kind of music, so that's probably why.
Personally, I love Zeitgeist. I heard "Tarantula" at 1:30 in the morning when I was 13 and it was the first time I had ever heard SP. To this day, no song has the kind of energy to get me moving like that one. I know alot of people dont like Billy's vocals, but I fell in love with his singing on the album and I love the harder sounding SP songs like "F*ck you" and "Zero" from infinite sadness. I enjoyed Zeitgeist's more rock sound and I think it's a very strong entry in their catalogue.
Zeitgeist is an awesome production. Love early stuff from Gish/Siamese Dream & saw them in 93&94. This is just as good and maybe better in some technical aspects. They rocked it hard here !!
Zeitgeist isnt the letdown many people consider it. It has some great tracks, and if you cut maybe two or three bad tracks, it would stand alongside the rest of their material well.
Also, Adore was fantastic. This is a return to form, primarily because the "fans" were butt hurt over Adore. Which is sad because true fans know they were wrong.
One of my favorite albums. Billy was right about America falling into a fascist nation while everyone is asleep at the wheel. Here we are bleeding the orchid.
I know pieces iscariot is not considered a pumpkins album, just b sides and rare songs but dam it is a great record. Definitely in my top 3 pumpkin albums.
Pisces Iscariot was my favourite for a long while. It just plays so well as an album. They get the order wrong so much on otherwise good albums, today, i hear it often. Mostly things sound better shuffled 😆 Pisces Iscariot just sounds like a classic album to me. Machina 2 is allegedly going to be released by Corgan soon (from the horse’s mouth unless it’s a false promise and they fall out and split up again 😆)
A friend of mine had this album on back in 2007 and I went out and bought it the next day. Just look at the recording credits, this album has been very well crafted and has a lot going on in it and I still put this album out here and there.
"We weren't trying to make some grand declaration. We weren't trying to repeat the high points of our past. It was more like a 'hello'." That's a good way to put it. this album isn't trying to be more than what it is. It isn't Siamese Dream 2, or Mellon Collie 2. It's just a rock record, and that's what I like about it.
@f0ul0u That's because the Smashing Pumpkins, at the time Zeitgeist was recorded, was only Billy and Jimmy. They recorded Zeitgeist themselves, then brought other band members (Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes/Pooley and Lisa Harriton) in to play the songs live, and be the new version of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Biggest problem with this album is the vocals. The feeling and passion is all but drained, instead he seems more focused on hitting the right notes, which has never been his strong suit. And then layering 30 tracks of himself doing oohs and aahs. Musically, this is a pretty outstanding set of songs, there's something good buried in there. Would love to hear the LA demo versions that they did.
werideatdusk yeah the lyrics seemed forced and didn't enhance the music. They stood out too much. Plus the lyrics themselves were terrible. God and country is so bad.

However, I've heard a number of new songs live and I can promise you that they are awesome.

The only thing that bothers me about newer pumpkins music is the level of Billy’s voice. He never recaptures that blended in with the music appeal that happened on sd and mcis. It made his voice so much more appealing

I think people have a hard time getting used to Smashing Pumpkins when they change. Remember how people hated Adore and Machina when the came out, and now more than fifteen or ten years later they're looked at as classic Smashing Pumpkins album. In ten years people will have learned to love Zeitgeist and consider it a Smashing Pumpkins classic.
I don't know why Billy had to do all the guitar parts, cos James was definitely capable. D'arcy was capable too; however, she clearly had the least experience in the group, so it was understandable for Billy to do the bass seeing as it wouldn't only take him 1 or a few takes as opposed to several takes. Billy is quite a perfectionist though, so I think he just felt more comfortable with doing all the things he was capable of by himself.
@guitarniac "always", sure. Mellon Collie is very much a band effort in the studio. James is missed. Funny how both Billy and Jimmy said he wasn't that much of a guitar player...Live footage abounds to prove otherwise.
Zeitgeist was definitely a departure from previous records. I listened intently to it back in 2007 and it's still growing on me, it's not a favorite of mine but I was a fan of the SP during the Adore era (98) so I kinda liked that goth rock thing they were doing. I think now especially after the release of Atum Zeitgeist has that classic SP sound that we don't get from the band anymore.
I know many people hate this album, but I love Zeitgeist. Billy and Jimmy put together a great record, I wish more people would give it an honest listen from start to finish. It is a great Rock record and was very well done.
it's weird to find out they were so concerned about recording organically with tape machine because the album really sounds typical of the dynamic range compression generation, all the rawness and grit muffled and digitally polished away. might as well have just used protools, i doubt anyone would have noticed the difference.
