The best thing you can do is to not get yourself in a desperate "need to be hired now" situation by either procrastinating or not filling out enough job applications across a number of sites. I have seen people so desperate for income to pay their current or next month's bills that they take anything. Know the ratings of the company you are joining. Compare their advertised pay rate with the real median salaries for your area. Non-profit organizations are notorious for lowballing salaries. You don't want to be paid $48,000 for a $60,000 - $70,000 job/responsibilities and only get 3% raise per year after that with no room for negotiation. If you do find you have to take this, make a plan to do your best work while you are there, take classes at night, and gain skills to get out of there and get a higher paying job. You don't own them any explanation or anything. Just apply and get the job before you leave the job. In most cases, resigning a position will make you ineligible for Unemployment Insurance and you won't be able to pay your bills and your credit will suffer. Play it smart.
