Just added two things to my shopping list. A set of small files and some chalk. While other channels want us to purchase the latest and greatest power tool, you’re helping us improve without taking a second mortgage. We all love you Leah!
Yes the chalk helps prevent file loading, it acts as a lube. In combination with that, if you take a Sharpie or El Marko and "paint" the surfaces of what your are filing you can see exactly where your file "strokes" have been. Thank you!
I was thinkin' about the marker technique while watching the video. Also, if the file is already used, stroke the chalk in the same direction as (parallel to) the cut of the teeth and work all the way across the surface with as many strokes as necessary. This has the added benefit of pushing out any pins that previously resided in the teeth while you chalk it up.
Just what I was looking for. Bought a set of Warrior spade bits from Harbor Freight and used a middle sized one to drill about 6 holes in a small oak tree stump/root so that I could pour some stump killer in them and the first one or two holes seemed to go fairly quick but after that things got a bit slower. I don't know if it's because of the quality of the steel or if I was getting into harder parts of the root but I knew after that that I needed to know if and how to sharpen them. Looks simple enough to not be intimidating. Thank you!
this how things were done when I was a kid. there were not recycling and people didn't waste as we do in todays world. keep on showing us trade secrets Leah
Thank you, my youngest daughter left her truck driving job to switch to construction. Now she goes thru these blades, and boss frowning. So we going to get a lot more life out of blades. Thanks again.
Thanks, my father in law gave me a whole peanut butter jar full of spade bits but most of them are super dull. Now I can fix them up and save my shoulder.
I have been working in wood for over sixty years but still manage to learn something new each day, especially from this lovely lady! Thank you Leah for taking the time to post the best videos on RUclips!
We need to somehow get you on an HGTV show. You are the best thing since Bob Villa... seriously. You are more engaging and have a tone and way of communicating that is very clear without being too pointed. Your communication skills and content are on par with anyone Ive seen on television D.I.Y. shows and well beyond most on RUclips. I do this stuff for a living and always pick up something from you. Thank you and God bless.
Yeah but unlike Bob she doesn't say "We" when describing who's going to do the upcoming task and then proceed to just stand in the way of those who actually do the task.
The thing I love most about this channel is the practicality of the tips given. While other woodworking and handyman channels are showing how to build drill-powered walking dinosaurs, Leah is showing how to do incredibly useful things! Great channel.
The fact u share and show how to not only help people, u save people money and arent selling.the fact u show what u do to help people saves them money. Ive never seen a person so well liked. But youre easy to appreciate. Thanks Leah
I just wanted to say thank you Leah for helping those who don't believe in themselves to do things for themselves! I find myself telling people so often YES YOU CAN! And you help prove that to them. You are awesome ☺️💜
Thank you so much. im a 1year-old cabinet maker, and my company use a lot of spade drill bit, so i have some dull bits. Finally i can sharpen the bits! THANK YOU!
Great tip Leah. I never knew about the chalk trick. I think I will try the chalk next time I have to file aluminum and see if that helps keep the file from clogging. Thanks!
i was drilling a bunch of dog holes and my 3/4" paddle bit just quit cutting after I was trying to muscle through. Then I thought, "I bet Leah has something to say about sharpening paddle bits, and sure enough she did. My only regret was not watching the video before I started drilling, because once I sharpened it, boom-da-bing, that project pretty much finished itself. Now I'm going to sharpen up the whole set. Thanks, Leah.
I found your RUclips channel from my mom, she sent me your video on how to fix a drywall hole. That helped a lot, and your videos are very entertaining. Thank you for your great videos!
You may have just saved me quite a bit of money with this video, now I can buy old spade bits from the thrift shop and make them like new with some love, care and sharpening huge thumbs up ty!
Knew they could be sharpened, but the chalk trick is new to me. I'm a locksmith, and have been getting a lot of people wanting keys for antique mortise locks the past couple months. I've been doing a lot of hand filing and constantly cleaning the files with a brush. So thank you very much!
Thanks for posting these videos. Two years ago when I worked for Servpro I used your oscillating blade sharpening video. Here I am as an apprentice electrician today using this one. Very useful knowledge and very enjoyable to watch.
Thank you for the video. I recently commented in the prior video asking for a sharpening video and you featured my comment! . From my experience I have noticed like with older tools the quality of the steel on new bits is not as good as older bits. Now I can sharpen my favorite oldies! You rock Leah!!
Thanks Leah, i'm new to working with wood, normally i wouldn't touch it unless it can rust. but i have quite a few of these spade bits and you have just taught me how to sharpen them.ta, from Australia.
Nice tip, never thought about sharpening spade bits. Surprising how we foget about these simple important tips to make a job easier. Thanks again ,be safe.
Leah, you always manage to teach me something new. Can't wait to try out the chalk next time I bring out a file. Keep doing what you do, cuz you do it so well!
Thank you, Leah! I'm forever chucking out flat bits, but your demo' makes sharpening look real easy! I'll definitely give it a go, as I've got plenty of really dull specimens to practice on.
I have one laying on my work bench right now. I hate throwing things away and was wondering if I could sharpen it. Low and behold I stumbled on to this video tonight. Thanks much!
My drill was cooking so I checked and had no bevel. Then used your hands as a reference and cut new bevels. Now its plowing through like I bought a new one. Thanks.
Just found this gem of a channel after watching that tape measure tips video, super cool tips that I had NO IDEA about!! These videos are almost asmr-like. Wish you the absolute best, what a lovely chanel and demeanor you have. I couldn't help but notice a hand shaking in the video, I'm a younger fella so idk much about shakes but I wish you the best of health and that is doesn't impair your great work.
Thank you for pointing out what should have been obvious, but I’ve been asleep at the switch apparently. Your demo with that freshly sharpened bit “sold” me. Great video!
I had an outdoor space in my last apt. I turned it into a container garden. I used these drill bits all the time to drill holes on the bottom of my wood containers for drainage. I used the bits with a hammer drill. I miss my garden and I miss my power tools. I had no idea you could sharpen the bits. Thank you for this video, Jane!
Good lord no. i have my grandfathers bits, saws, planes etc. There is no way on this sweet green earth id throw them away . EVER. They are included in my will to pass to My son and grandsons. Your teaching method is wonderfull. simple, calm to the point. Thank You :)
Nice... I got an old set of bits from my father who passed away recently.... His 1inch paddle bit produced more smoke than chips... I did what you did but, I also had to knock down burrs on the backside. Now it cuts like wood like butter! Thanks!
Please don't ever stop making videos! I can't even begin to list out all the things I've needed to know that you made understanding and applying almost as easy at it looks. (The ones that weren't aren't due to your instructions...they are 100% just user error. 😁 )
I'm a recent subscriber. And I've learned more from you in a month than I ever have . Terrific inspiring videos Leah. You make it look so easy with your calm, informative advice. Much joy, and thank you.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thought I might be doing it wrong and wasn't sure how to keep the file clean. Pretty clever trick with the chalk. thank you.
I might not be the sharpest light bulb in the knife drawer... but I never thought I couldn't sharpen a spade bit... It just *never* occurred to me! Since I don't use spade bits that often I'm embarrassed to say they sit in my drill bit drawer and have all rusted, and worse part of it is that they go back to 1980's... heck, they're old enough to drink and drive, just not at the same time mind you... So yeah... they still work, kind of.. so either I can try to clean them up and sharpen them or just get new bits... So I'm saying: "I can do this"... but just not now 😁 (excuse: Lazy)
Another one of your good tips Leah! As a retired locksmith, I dulled many paddle bits. I got pretty good at sharpening with a Dremel tool using fiber reinforced cutoff wheels. Hidden nails are the worst! Worked well for metal hole saws too.
Haha everyone one below is saying what I said te 1st time I saw one of your video's. You have such a great voice perfect for instructional video. Thanks for these massive tips Leah.
Great video Leah. I sharpen both spade a d frostner bits make sure you sharpen both side evenly because if you take more off one side than the other only the higher side will cut.
Would have been interesting to see how effective the blunt spade bit was, to see how effective you sharpening was. Thank you for all your videos, really appreciated.
Thank you, Leah. I've got a box of these bits that need sharpening. Now I can put them back in use--if I can find my small files. Love the chalk trick! Never heard that one before.
Thank you thank you thank you. Every time l hear your calm - patient voice, I wish I had someone like you as my neighbor!
Wish I had her as my foreman... I’m always getting yelled at 🤣

An excellent additional tip, sir. 👍

Thanx for the chalk tip. Thanx for speaking slowly and clearly, helps the elderly
Thank you, my youngest daughter left her truck driving job to switch to construction. Now she goes thru these blades, and boss frowning. So we going to get a lot more life out of blades. Thanks again.
The tone and cadence of your voice really resonates and compliments the knowledge being given. Great job. Great teaching technique
Nice job. I like using soap stone to prevent loading on the file teeth. It is a little more lubricious. 😁😎
Thanks, my father in law gave me a whole peanut butter jar full of spade bits but most of them are super dull. Now I can fix them up and save my shoulder.

Thank you Leah, I was just using my 1 1/4" spade bit in the attic yesterday and it was dull and slow. I will try this, it beats buying a new set

You've given me a new use for that old ignition points file thst his been idle since the last car I owned that had points (around 1981).
Big M , I was thinking the same thing! I think I've had mine since 1965= 55 years someone is old😂✌🏻️
I used an emery board or just replaced the points.

I love all your very straightforward tips on tool maintenance.
The info about the chalk is sweet considering I am always using files on saw blades, chainsaws, and many lawn tools. Can't wait to try it out.
