Since craving is not yet gone your "self" which is the billions of karmic results of actions from the past, continue to create a new self into the future. The difference now is that 3 fetters of craving are removed from the stream of conciousnesses leading to different future results. But even an arahant has his conciousness arise again but it is unaffected by craving. He will die when his karma for this life expires -but then he will not return to yet another life.
