  • The 1911 .45 caliber pistol, designed by John Browning, has been in constant production for over 100 years. Made by countless gun makers in countless variations, the Series 70 Government Model by Colt, the original manufacturer, sticks close to the configuration designated as the M1911A1 in 1926.

    I've been carrying my Series 70 every day for years. My gun looks exactly like yours. During all this time, I only changed the springs in it. My grandfather gave me this Colt when I was 22 years old. Now I'm 35, but I still haven't found anything better for myself. I love the thin handle and smooth recoil.

    Purchased mine new as a Police duty weapon in Houston in 1972. I paid less than $200.00 back then and still have it. Like me, it's retired and safely tucked away. All my .45ACP shooting now is done with a Thompson Contender and a Glock. Still love the big bullet. The Contender is a fun gun and with the ten inch barrel the big bullet gets a little more velocity.

    I agree totally with your assessment of the reissued "70 Series" Colt. I bought one about 8 years ago to commemorate my almost 30 years of Army service. The A1's served me well in peace and war. The reissued series does seem to be a lot smoother than the old war horses. Compared to some of my more modern guns, they are definitely smoother. Accuracy-wise, my Colts are accurate enough for anything I want to do.

    • @stuffandthingsyoutube
      @stuffandthingsyoutube  8 лет назад

      You definitely have WAY more experience with the platform than I do, so it's nice to hear that you think the Series 70 stacks up well.

  • @ShaneisRight
    @ShaneisRight Год назад +2

    Well, I looked everywhere and couldn't find one of the Series 70 reissues like yours. Looked EVERYWHERE....no soap. Went to Gunbroker and said, "Someone has GOT to be auctioning one of these." Still no soap, but.....persistence pays off. Still couldn't find a custom reissue 70, but got lucky and found a jewel/gem/beauty of an original Series 70 mfg. in 1981. No scratches, no pitting, just some hard-to-see blue fade on bottom of slide near the muzzle. Can't tell it's a 41 year-old gun. No customizing, no bastardizing, no Kimber-like beavertail added....just a plain 70 with the original collett bushing. Blue slide is so shiny I can use it for a rear view mirror. Paid a quarter of a kidney for it but it's just paper and I've wanted this exact Colt (with same grips, wood with gold Rampant Pony) for decades. Thank you, Mr. Stuff....for keeping me on the hunt for my main must-have sidearms....the other being a 70's manufactured Browning Hi-Power with wood grips and standard hammer spur (not the ring hammer). Paid another quarter of a kidney for that, too. So I have half a kidney to spend on a few other classics, after which I'll see how much my spleen is worth.
    I would only suggest to collectors/shooters of this .45....if you want to customize it, buy two and keep one just the way it is.

    Of my 30 Model 1911s, 23 are Colt and of those one is a 1946 Argentine Sistema, two are US Gov't Property A1s, three Series 70 Gold Cup, and seventeen Series 70 Mk IV. All are very accurate and all have functioned flawlessly for years. I absolutely love the platform. I own ZERO polymer pistols and will never own one. My other 1911s are Remington R1, RIA, Kimber Pro Carry II, Ruger SR 1911, S&W Pro Series, Springfield Garrison, and Springfield Mil-Spec. I love them all, but my Colts are my favorites.

    God Dude, I bought mine in 1978 from Barney's Gun Shop on Wardlow RD, in Long Beach, Ca. for $379. They had a good smith, in fact most of the LBPD purchased there and used their smith. I had it ramped and accurized, with a 2.5lb trigger pull. They threw in some King Tappan Custom Combat sights with the three dots. It came with one clip, so I bought two more. Barney used to let me load there as long as I bought my materials from him. I would load up 300 rounds of lead semi-wadcutters at a sitting then go shoot them up at the Long Beach police range, once a week. I pumped around 4 thousand rounds through that pistol and man I could put the whole clip through a 7 " black at 25 yards rapid fire, all day long. One thing you mentioned about the Trigger bite. Yeah, when shooting up 300 rounds I was experiencing a bloody hole in the flesh between the thumb and trigger finger. Instead of adding a longer beavertail, I just had the Hammer bobbed a bit and problem solved. I have used my 45 for home defense for over 40 years and I can tell you I sleep like a baby. Confidence is the name of the game. My Colt series 70 still does the job. Thank you for this video. It brought back alot of good memories.

Solidifies why I'm not going for just any Colt .45. Not the newer Classic 01911-C, and definitely not the Series 80 (1991 series). It's the 01970A1-CS for me. Hello, I see this video is about 2.5 yrs old now; but you did an excellent job making a timeless video about a timeless firearm. It was a pleasure to watch! Of course, the difficulty with owning a beautiful piece such as the Colt 1911 is the desire to keep it pristine while also wanting to shoot the hell out-of-it. Where is the balance? I don't know. For me...just start loading mags and banging away $$$$...it's not a Python. And the trigger on the 1911; so sweet. And hurling cannon balls down range, it's just not the same as 9mm. Ain't those 45 ACP rounds a joy when you got a bucket full of 'em and a whole bunch of mags to load! And it goes BOOM! not bang. Yep, I know.
    -Thanks

    Great video! I have two of those!! However mine are the new Classics. One never shot & is going in a case when I get one that can be bookends . Mine has a straight main spring housing. My Springfield has the arched. I'm not long fingered so the straight works for me a little better. The curved down tang beaver tail was designed that way because the gun was designed to be shot with one hand and it helps keep the gun stable. I think it looks better than the curve up beaver tail.
    FYI the classic goes for 2k on gun brokers

    Yes, it is Gorgeous. A classic for sure and the sound and appearance of the quality comes through in the video. First firearm I ever fired was the 1911 in basic training. Now you need a Tommy Gun to complete the set. When I started shooting the Glock 21 I had to invest in reloading setup to keep myself in affordable ammo. I went for a simple press for .45 ACP only and it was pretty inexpensive. Happy shooting.

      I might have to look into that sometime too. Guns are expensive enough without paying through the nose for ammo.

    I only shoot light target hand loads out of my Colt 45 Government Model. The bullet weight is 185 gr. button bullet. The recoil is very light very manageable. I never ever did shoot 230 gr. out from my Colt. Super accurate!

      It's funny I feel the same way about my single action colt army clone, heavy, all steel hand cannon, though I went with a Ruger so I could run hotter loads.

      I have the Ruger Vaquero in .357 magnum, had it for a few years and I love it, it's the preferred pistol for a lot of SASS folks, super fun to shoot, especially the Buffalo Bore rounds.
