Hello Fraser! Just found you through Scott's channel and his newest video! I loved Cold Enough for Snow and definitely want to pick up At Certain Points We Touch...I don't think it's out in the US yet. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Fraser, I like the person voguing in the background on the album cover. I really want to read finish the Laila Starr story. Books of Jacob! It’s following me around. Memphis is on my mental TBR! 😊 When We Lost Our Heads sounds like a Shelly book and you said, “in a Ferrante way.” Those are the words of my soul!
Yes! So excited to see your picks. The Colony and Books of Jacob are on my list of 2022 releases to prioritize getting to this year already. Surprised to see Goliath, but that pushes it up for me, I really enjoyed Riot Baby from the author. I also just put in A Tiny Upward Shove as one I want to see in book tube prize, so hoping to read it.
Yeah Goliath really surprised me. I wonder how I’ll feel with a second reading, but I really loved it that first time. It’s a lot better than Riot Baby and I liked that too! I hope Tiny Upward Shove Makes it!
Cold Enough for Snow has appeared on a few of these lists and it’s on my e-reader so I must get to it soon!! Great list Fraser, you have some fab books on here 😊📚❤️
Thanks! Yeah it’s a weird one, for sure. Basically have to be about progress in a metaphysical way, or else you’ll not be into it, which for most people seems like a rather large ask lol
Open ending as long as they're done well like it was in The Colony are great. I'm not a fan if it's a very plot focused book, but I liked the doubt. It's nice to see a good review for A Certain Points we Touch... Or even a review at all, I think you're the only Booktuber who has read it. I've struggled to get a copy, but I must try a bit harder to find one now.
Yeah the ending in the colony felt so good to me, because everyone’s arcs led to very ominous points. It felt more interesting to not codify them and let people extrapolate. Bob the bookerer was where I saw that, I’m pretty sure!! Waaaay earlier in the year, but I think it made his best books of the year too, can’t remember if it was fiction or best queer books though. Could be either.
Heh, I was just saying on someone else's year-end video that I found this last year's new releases to mostly be uninspiring, but you seem to have found ones that are making me a liar (or a grump at least) on that! 🤣
Well it was easy to put the list together, basically all of the 5 star ones I had and that’s it, whereas my backlist was hard to cull down to even 25. I’m fairly sure the majority and then some came from reading new releases too. Especially the Booker list. Boy, some were just terrible.
Yeah fair enough!!! It’s very esoteric. I think it does become about the human condition and the madness of crowds, along with the Jewish cultural and historical things. But it’s certainly a large commitment.
Great list Fraser! I’m going to record my best fiction video today and two of these are on it. When We Lost Our Heads didn’t make the cut but I agree with what you have to say about it: playful, dark and feminist. Several other titles on your list are high on my TBR.
I think if I had read less books for the Booker eligible project, I would have actually had a stronger list to choose from. I had a lot of those to choose for worst books and many I read were from last year, so it ended up being actually pretty rare that something published this year was pretty memorable.
@@SpringboardThought yeah, I used to read more prize list nominations, but now, aside from trying to read as many from the Giller longlist as possible, I just pick up those that seem likely to match my tastes.
ahh!! been waiting for this list from you since you are a prolific reader!!!!!!!!! can't wait to see your backlist picks :) i need to return to books of jacob i put it on pause and its been a longggg time since i picked it up lol
It’s pretty different than his other stuff, that I’ve read anyway. I have only read Blood Meridian and No Country For Old Men though. I tend to really like metaphysical books though.
I've had Devotion on my maybe list for a while after hearing very mixed reviews. I really like the way you described it. It's piqued my interest in trying this book to see what I think.
I just recently subscribed to your channel and I can tell my TBR is going to grow even larger. Thank you for reading and reviewing books I don't see on other channels!
It’s being collected into an oversized edition in a couple months, I think. I’m very tempted. I think the artwork would be really well suited to the format. Hope you like it as much as I did!
@@SpringboardThought I saw that but it's over twice the price so I'm happy to settle for the original format edition. This is the theme of the current novella I'm writing and hopefully about to finish within the next week.

Ohh I’m behind on my watching, that’s great, though. Thanks for coming by! I don’t think At Certain Points is out here either. Hopefully soon!

When we lost our heads has such a great plot and narration between the girls, it does feel very Ferrante. The twists and turns are just exquisite too!
I don’t know how I missed this six days ago. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts as always.
Thank you! The different picture probably didn’t help hah
I still want to make time for The Colony! Every time I hear you talk about it, I'm intrigued.
I love it so much!
The colony and the books of Jacob were great. Also, I love that you have the art of losing in the background 😅
Loved it! I have a lot of favourite backlisted ones, it’ll be tough to narrow it down

I hope you like it if you get to it! Thanks very much! :)
Also, I think your review of The Passenger was perfect. A good book that few people will like.
Thanks! Yeah it’s a weird one, for sure. Basically have to be about progress in a metaphysical way, or else you’ll not be into it, which for most people seems like a rather large ask lol
Thanks for sharing. Devotion and especially Joan looks really interesting!
Hope you like them if you give it a try, Deb!
Tremendous video. Your capsule reviews are always a joy. I am happy the Jessica Au snuck in at the end.
Thank you!! Yeah, I really wouldn’t mind nabbing that for a re read. It never left my brain.

Excellent as always. Your astonishing ability to consume fiction and retain as much as you do is inspiring.
Thanks so much! Very kind of you!
Totally agree!

Thank you for the Ram V. recommendation.
Welcome! Hope you like it too!
Books of Jacob definitely intrigues me, but what a chunk of book on a subject I'm not completely sure I want to spend such a long time with...
Yeah fair enough!!! It’s very esoteric. I think it does become about the human condition and the madness of crowds, along with the Jewish cultural and historical things. But it’s certainly a large commitment.
Great list, Fraser. The Colony, The Books of Jacob, and When We Lost Our Heads are high on my TBR. 😊💙
I was so surprised by When We Lost Our Heads!

Books of Jacob is so intimidating. I’m glad I was reading it physically and on audio. It’s such a wild ride !
@@SpringboardThought doing it w/ audio on the side is a great idea!! you're making me want to go back to it soon lol
An impressive list. I’ve read The Passenger which I thought was ok, not up to his early novels. I’ve got M Son of the Century on my Kindle.
It’s pretty different than his other stuff, that I’ve read anyway. I have only read Blood Meridian and No Country For Old Men though. I tend to really like metaphysical books though.
Your indepth book analysis is just awesome. Very detailed and fantastic bookish video.
Thanks so much!!
If you love Mercury Pictures Present you definitely have to read Marra's other books. The Tsar of Love and Techno is my fave!
I will! I have them!
I've had Devotion on my maybe list for a while after hearing very mixed reviews. I really like the way you described it. It's piqued my interest in trying this book to see what I think.
I could see why it’s divisive, particularly near the end. But it was certainly for me!
I just recently subscribed to your channel and I can tell my TBR is going to grow even larger. Thank you for reading and reviewing books I don't see on other channels!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Booktube is always growing my TBR so much. It’s wonderful and daunting! Haha
*off to purchase the graphic novel about Death's struggle against immortality* !!

@@MarcNash yeah they always seem to be until a month or two later. I’ve got it wishlisted to nab it when and if it falls. Cool about the overlap!
@@SpringboardThought Needless to say mine is not a graphic novel, but the subject is like catnip to me!
