  • In this video, I go out to take some coastal, long exposure, panoramic images! This isn't me just taking a bunch of landscape photography terms and jumbling them up. When I headed out to Froward Point on the south Devon coast, I had a clear vision of the type of landscape photograph I wanted to capture.
    I also spend a bit more time telling you why I visited this location, breakdown the steps I used to setup my Nikon D850, and show you how I captured the image. I also decide to make a panoramic print…. my favourite bit!
    If you would like to see the images featured in the video in a bit more detail then head over to my blog at:
    julianbaird.me...
    If you're interested, here is some of the gear I used to make this video:
    Video shot with a Sony RX100M4 (amzn.to/2eDyOIS)
    Audio recorded using a Rode Smartlav + (amzn.to/2wMJh8x) and a Zoom H1 (amzn.to/2gyGPfd)
    Aerial video captured using a DJI Mavic Pro (amzn.to/2kGfg8Y)
    Video edited in Adobe Premiere CC (amzn.to/2iX4la4)
    Images shot on a Nikon D850 (amzn.to/2eZiNxd) with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (amzn.to/2mcJrSC)
    I also used these filters: Lee Filters Circular Polariser (amzn.to/2DMeCQq) and a Lee Filters 10 stop ProGlass ND filter (amzn.to/2DKIOet)
    Images processed in Adobe Lightroom CC (amzn.to/2eDw8uC).
    Images printed on a Canon Pixma Pro-10S printer (amzn.to/2Anrcj7)
    Images printed on Fotospeed Platinum Baryta 300 (www.fotospeed....)

    The green in #1 is beautiful, the sky in #3 is beautiful, but #2 has a better balance and variation and together with the light on the cliffs which draws the attention, this makes this picture the most pleasant to let the eyes wander in. So I go for #2. Thanks for the video!

    Good day from Ottawa Canada. Just a few days ago, I did my 1st panoramic photo and it came out great. Since then I've been on RUclips to find out how to do "Long Exposure Panoramic" and came upon your video. I like it and will try it. Re your 2 panoramic photos, I like # 1. Between the 3 of them I like #3.

    Really informative vlog Julian, no problem with the length when your'e being taught by the master 😎. I liked the blue tone on the 1st Pano, but preferred the light on the rocks and the hues in the sky so No 2 just gets my vote. Having said that No 3 is my favourite overall!!

    All three are beautiful images, and Froward Point is a grand location. Out of the two panoramic pictures I like the one you took later more. The changed weather conditions (softer light) definitely played a part in helping you make the rocks stand out more and in adding a tangible moody flavour to the already fabulous scenery. All elements in that photo seem to come together more seamlessly than in the first panoramic image you took. The third photo is my favourite, though! It has the basic elements of the other two in the lower part of the frame but the sky with the wispy clouds is just gorgeous here! Also, the transition from one shade of blue to the next from top to bottom and the horizon accentuated in a strong navy-blue line separating the two classical elements --- these are really captivating in that regular shot.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Tomasz...it's always interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on my photos. The third shot is the winner with most people :-)

    • @tomaszstramel3594
      @tomaszstramel3594 6 лет назад +1

      I went for a walk further reflecting on those two images I liked best. I think I'd pick the panoramic one if I were to judge its overall artistic merits. It shows three ingredients of a great landscape shot: (i) the inherent beauty of the subject of the photo, (ii) the ability of the photographer to notice that particularly attractive quality, and (iii) the skill required to transform it successfully into an image. The other photo, which you report as a general favourite with people, has the indisputable advantage of having been taken at an opportune moment, when the subject itself assumed a more glorious and variegated look without getting too busy and distracting for the eye. As such, it was in a way bound to appear more universally pleasing visually :-). PS. Like others, I appreciate those details you share when preparing a shot. They are invaluable reminders of how much work needs to precede (and then follow) the actual press of the shutter release for a photo to look this good. It's a realization which is both humbling and inspiring!

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Peter. I did look at doing a creative crop of image 3 to make a pano (plenty of pixels to play with on the D850), but I lost too much of the interesting sky. However, if I'd maybe shot it as a pano (with mulitple frames) it might have worked out. The trouble was the light was fading quickly at the point and it would have been unlikely that I would have completed the sequence. Still, all good experience I can take with me on the next shoot. Thanks for watching! :-)

    Julian, great video. I honestly cannot choose between images 2 and 3, but prefer them both to the first panoramic which I feel has a distracting sky due to the lack of colour and detail. On balance I would go for the 3rd image because the sky is so interesting.

    Very enjoyable, and useful vlog Julian. 3 great images too. For me the Pano #1 is the better of the two panos, it's a simpler less bitty image than the first one imho, everything looks smoother and more subtly blended colours. The image #3 is also acracker, well worth stopping for. Now to look into getting a printer...............

    Hi Julian, inspirational vid and a really nice location. I would go for the pano marked #1 with the more moody look and blue tones. Not sure if you used different shutter speeds but I like that the water is blurrier. Also I like the hazy transition from water to sky creating a less strong horizon giving the image are more minimalistic feel. At least I like the white foam framing the bigger rock on the left. Overall a really great picture and I would be happy to have that in my portfolio :) In #2 the texture on the water surface feels a bit distracting to me. Another note on your vid: maybe watch for the reflection on the paper showing the prints. And a question: did you the LR pano module for stitching? Wondering if using the auto pano feature would result in a perfectly straight horizon like yours using so many vertical shots. Great vlog, cheers!

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Hi Florian, thanks for watching and for your comments - it's interesting to read how people all view the images and what they like and dislike. Both panos were created in LR, though I did try and sort out the horizon in #1 using the pano feature in PS, but ended up with the same result. :-)

    I liked this content very much! I keep going back and forth between the two pano images, I love the cool tones in the second one,but for me I like the horizon in the first. The third photo takes it hands down! Love the interest in the sky! Glad you got out your camera!

    Hi Julian, I do like the original panorama (number 2), I think it's the colours, the warm pastels. The third shot is also great with those beautiful clouds but because it's after sunset, doesn't have the warmth and clarity on the islands. And I'm always a sucker for a wide ratio photo. All good shots though. Heres a challenge - try a multi-bracket HDR, long exposure panorama - have to do it in the summer so the day is long enough to get in all the exposures! ;-) Bytheway, how did you stitch it? Manually or Photoshop auto?

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Cheers Terry! :-) I would have done a bracketed version, but with the D850, there really is little point in taking multiple exposures as the dynamic range is so good. I probably would have been there for about an hour though! lol Imagine I made a mistake half way through..lol I did the stitching in LR using the photo merge feature.

    Each of the 3 images have their own plus points, but I like no. 2 the most, mainly because of its higher contrast I guess.
    Yes, please do more of this kind of longer videos!
    One question though: Why even bother to make a panoramic if you could have achieved the same in much less time by shooting it with the 24-70 instead? The D850 should provide more than enough megapixels, so I believe it wasn't really required to collect more of these megapixels in order to print the image big. Or am I mistaken?

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Marc, glad you liked the longer video. Good question though....while I could have cropped a single D850 frame and still had plenty of pixels left, the result would be different. If I crop image 3 (the single frame) to the same aspect ration as the pano, and place the horizon at the same place, though they look very similar there are differences. The main one is that on the single frame crop, the islands actually have more foreground water than the panoramic image. They look very similar, but they are different. Hard to properly describe in words. :-)

    I like No. 2 the best, because of the colors and a slightly better composition. Peak of the left rock is little further down from the horizon line, which I like more

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Steve. :-) No, the camera uses the GPS data from the phone to embed it in the EXIF information. I believe you can get a seperate GPS module that attaches to the camera, but that seems redundant since we all carry phones these days. :-)

    Very interesting video and something I’ve tried before. Would be excellent to see how you blended the images so you don’t see any joins in the water. This is always the issue I have where you see a faint joins when you step back from the image where the waves don’t line up. Thanks for the hard work you put in.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Andrew. The blending of the joins in a LE pano are always a bit tricky. I don't think I've ever managed to get it 100% perfect. Sometimes you get lucky at the joins and when not I make a rare trip into PS and use some of the paint / clone tools with a lower opacity to hide some of the more obvious joins. Thanks so much for watching. 👍

    Hi Julian. Really enjoyed this video and was keen to see the output from the 70-200 f/2.8. I'm saving my pennies for one and have to say you nailed the images at f/11. Would you say the lens' sweet spot is around f/8 on this model? Good to see this level of detail on a video Julian - time well spent. Many thanks for sharing. P.S. Image one for me but it's a very close call !

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Tim! Most lenses have a sweet spot at f/8, but I either shoot this lens wide open or at around f/11 or f/13. But even at the smaller appertures I haven't been unhappy with the image quality, so I haven't felt the need to try and shoot at f/8. Hope that helps?

    2 because it has more going on than 1. it seems to have a wider dynamic range which gives my eye/brain more to process and just holds my attention more. If I were buying a print it would seem to offer more bang for my buck, as it were. Having said that, if 3 had been a pano it might have won, because of the detail in the sky. Now, were you to use the magic of post processing to merge the bottom part of 2 with the sky in 3 you would have an absolute winner of an image.

    Excellent video, many thanks. Had some issues with my panoramics using the polariser, giving the sky inconsistent colours when stitching together. Something you or others have come across? So either need to remove the filter or find a fix...

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Simon, thanks. Yes, I've had problems previously with polarisers. This tends to happen more at wide angles, where you can end up with uneven polarisation. If I do use the polariser in a pano, I will try and not over polarise the image.... i.e. rotate it until the effect is only just noticable. :-)

    Hey Julian, I wondered about the progression of the shadow up the rock face over a 10-12 minute period. Was that an issue at all? It didn't really look like it in the image unless you had to do something in post to compensate.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks Philip. Yes, it was an issue actually. However, by the time I actually took the image you saw on the video the sun had dipped below the hill (behind me) so the light remained more even for a longer period of time. :-)

    Great stuff mate, the 3rd image is a beauty! I've been waiting for some moody sky and rough sea for that shot. IMO the 2nd image would have benefitted by the low cloud/mist softening the horizon a lot more, it looked a lot softer on your phone footage taking the shot.

      Thanks! Unfortunately I didn't. It snowed while I was there bringing the snow line down onto Beinn Duiriness. My skills (and equipment) don't cover hill walking in the snow. I once went up Cruachan when there was only a "dusting of snow", and soon realised that how it looks at sea level is very different at 3,700 ft! Who would have though the snow would fall that low at Easter! Gutted not to have made it up. :-)

    May I make a suggestion; get yourself an easel or something you can put your prints on when you want to film/show the results, you are passionate about printing so display them and stop holding the print as though it was an 80's ghetto blaster.

      Hi Michael, the reason I didn't cover the merge was because it's a really short part of the process and relatively well documented elsewhere. I hope you eventually found what you are looking for though. :-)

    I really like this episode. Long is fine. I think it always depends on what you are presenting. I never would have tried a truly long exposure pano. It seemed impossible to me especially with the polarizer. And It was a surprise that you were able to get a good image. Of the the pano images, the 2nd is definitely a winner, it has dramatic mood the other lacks, the color and the long exposure effect works so well for that image. The bonus image was truly that, unplanned, unexpected and perfectly executed. How could I not love that sky. The simple compositional elements really work well on all images. Of the 3, I would still pick the 2nd pano as the best of all 3. The mood, so often hard to really capture. The 3rd images is just beautiful.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much Glen! The polariser can be tricky to use with this type of image. The key is not to turn up the polarisation to much. To much polarisation and you can end up with uneven skies....not that there was much of a sky in image 2. It's great hearing everyones opinion on the 3 images and how people like different images for different reasons. Everyone seems to like image 3 though. Thanks for your support! :-)
