    You now need to watch their "Making of Evergreen" documentary. It shows them in their creative process recording sessions while making the Evergreen album. It truly is amazing how they work together to create the arrangements that they perform with everyone's input making a difference in the end result. Really hope you put that on your list soon!

    Okay so yes Kevin was doing the big Tymphany style drums, no real drums. Mitch is a Counter-Tenor, he is well above an Alto which is a female singer, the equivalent would be a Baritone for a Male which is Scotts sweet spot. Counter Tenor's generally are able to hit up to 2 or 3 octaves above a Soprano's (females) sweet spot. And Mitch is one of the most technically perfect Counter Tenor's in any Genre, he has a once in a Generation voice. The album that this song was on was nominated for their 4th Grammy.

    To hear just how good Kevin is at imitating a complete drum kit, try Bohemian Rhapsody - he has said that he tried to replicate the original drum line for the song, and he did an amazing job of it! Snare, toms, cymbals - the whole thing!
    Glad you reacted to the BTS for the video - I wish more reactors included those in their reactions.
    BTW - the other band members all seem to call her Kirstie, but I've seen an introduction she did where she said (roughly), "Kirstin, but you can call me Kirstie like thirsty". I think as long as you don't call her KRistin, she'll be happy to answer to either one.

      Any time you can see the entire band rather than just the soloist, watch Kevin. He has a whole invisible drum kit, and he knows exactly where each instrument is. He'll reach out with an invisible drumstick and hit an invisible tom, and you hear the tom. You *know* the sound came from Kevin, but how can it have? You just *saw* him hit the tom! It can get very surreal very quickly.
      There are a lot of things to like about Kevin - his voice, his intelligence, his skill with instruments, his wonderful laugh, the fact that he's just a really nice guy. But I think the thing I like most about him is the way he can make me see the instruments that aren't there.

    It’s Kirsten and her nickname is Kirstie. Kirstie does rhyme with thirsty.
    Mitch is a counter tenor. That’s a tenor who sings very high. A contra alto is a woman who sings low.

  • @alfredh3071
    @alfredh3071 Год назад +10

    Kirsten and Scott are belting the feature in the second stanza, with Mitch and Matt in harmony on mid section. Kevin takes a few phrases of the high harmonies at the crescendo, then goes back to percussion. They switch parts when it’s necessary for the expression of the music. Kirsten is the belter in the big sections of most of their songs, and it’s because her voice cuts through the lower register of the boys. She has a super sultry low register, check out the song she wrote called Be My Eyes

    • @lauriep2018
      @lauriep2018 Год назад +1

      Yes! Kirstin seems to always be so far back in their studio mixes- but in concert she’s a 100% belter and I think they tend to lower her mic volume too bc her belly is loud and strong

  • @susanpeterson9947
    @susanpeterson9947 Год назад +24

    Mitch is a Counter tenor or contra tenor.
    This version of the song was prerecorded in studio and that’s why you didn’t see Kevin doing much percussion. As far as I know all of the drum sounds were from him.
    And fyi, her name isn’t Keer stie, it’s Kirstie like thirsty.
    Thanks for a great reaction, you two.

    "Kirstie rhymes with thirsty" doesn't mean that she prefers Kirstie over Kirstin. The most common mispronunciation of her name is Kristin (with the "r" and "i" in the wrong order), but it's hard to find something that rhymes with Kirstin. Therefore she tells people to remember that Kirstie rhymes with thirsty, and that mnemonic also makes it easier to remember that her name is Kirstin, not Kristin. Either Kirstin or Kirstie is correct.

    When will people learn? Yes, Kevin *is* that good. There may be a better beatboxer somewhere, but if so I've never encountered him or her.
    "Contra-alto" isn't a word. A contralto (with a single "a") is a woman who sings in the alto range, except it generally means a specially trained soloist who has a lower range and a "darker" tone color. Mitch is a contratenor, AKA counter tenor. With a range of just over six octaves Mitch can certainly reach contralto levels, but he's more comfortable in his higher registers. I've heard a contralto/contratenor duet where the female contralto sounded more like a baritone.
    Yes, Kirstin could easily reach the same notes Mitch does, but she's better at belting them out (see their -cover- upgrade of "Seasons of Love" to hear Kirstin belting out a high solo). When you want that ethereal angelic sound Mitch is the better choice.

      @@TouchyReactions You're welcome. I was late to the party too, just discovered them about 6 months ago. My husband died just over a year ago, and Pentatonix has made a horrible year a bit easier to deal with.
      Have you discovered SuperFruit yet? SuperFruit is the separate RUclips channel Mitch and Scott started where they could deal with things that Pentatonix didn't want cluttering up their already crowded official RUclips channel. Their final post to SuperFruit was on February 14, 2019, and I don't expect them to start it up again, but everything they already posted to it is still there. A lot of it is vlogging about being gay, or just everyday life, and there are a few live streams with fans, things like that. Some of those are very good, but not especially musical. Then there's the stuff they did for fun. I highly recommend their "FROZEN Medley (feat. Kirstie Maldonado)." They invited Kirstie over for a relaxing evening together, started out with a few drinks, and then headed to the studio to re-enact the major songs from _Frozen._ Between takes they continued drinking cocktails. The result is extremely funny, and also proves that not even being totally drunk can keep these people from being incredibly good singers. Wait around after the apparent end for the blooper reel. Another funny one (though not musical) is "99 Ways to Ditch Your Date." They guarantee (correctly, IMO) that every one of them would work. Of course, they might also get you thrown out of a restaurant.... This also has a blooper reel. GUY.EXE is an official music video that they did for a song on one of the _Future Friends_ albums that they put out - very professional, and very funny. No blooper reel.
      And then there's a totally serious SuperFruit song - a cover of Katy Perry's "Rise." Mitch and Scott are both gay, and they were deeply affected by the Pulse gay nightclub massacre in 2016, so they asked three friends of theirs, all wonderful singers and all members of the LGBTQ+ community, to collaborate with them on "Rise," in response to the massacre. It's incredibly powerful, and empowering. This is the song that's been getting me through the first holidays without my husband. The five singers are, in order of appearance, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose, and Mary Lambert.
