"Real whisky is cloudy! Deal with it!!!" That was great.
Hey Ralphy! Great point on American taste for sugar. At 2 months of eliminating most sugar from my diet my sense of taste is tuned up! I feel like it's improved my enjoyment of delicious scotch!
So glad this whisky got reviewed on your channel. I discovered 12 Caledonia myself some ago, already had 7 bottles of it so far.
On a whim my wife bought a bottle of the Edradour 10 for my birthday about a year ago. To this day it is one of my favorite whiskies. Never gets old.
Thanks for recommending this one, Ralfy! I've opened a bottle an hour or so ago, waited a while, had a smell/taste, added some water and had another smell/taste. This whisky has a lovely, complex nose, nothing like I've ever smelt before. The taste, though, was somewhat of a surprise. It's quite astringent and "dry" at first, but give it a little time and a whole range of smells and flavours start to emerge. This whisky will take some time to get my head around, but I have a strong feeling it will get better and better with each dram.
Hi Ralfy, I’ve been searching for this bottle over two years now after first seeing your review. I finally came across a shop in another state that had 2 left and took a gamble and purchased both for $100 each. I figured I can easily sell the other to one of my malt mates if it didn’t work for me. I opened the bottle and rewatched your video comparing tasting notes right along with you. As usual, you were spot on with your comments. This is certainly a full flavored dram and incredibly complex. Not as sweet as say an Allardice but it tasted even older with tons of dark fruits, dry sherry dankness and earthy old dunnage warehousing. Just incredible flavor profiles that I’ve never tasted in a scotch whiskey. Thank you for guiding me on this road in my malt journey! Cheers mate!
Definitely on point with your tasting notes, especially the bitter cherries! One of my favorite new Single Malts from this year.
Hi ralfy
I hope you are doing great, I just wanted to say that edradour 12year old 🇳🇨 is a superb whiskey, it's my favorite whiskey of all time, it takes me back to my home 🏡 of 43 years, the basement smelled like this whiskey, moldy basement of which I get from this whiskey, oh the day's of yourn, I will be buying 2 more bottles soon, thank you ralfy for taking me back to when I was 17 year's old, I want to go back, 🚶♀️ in time, I'm now 72 years old, and and God bless you for what you do, please keep doing what you do by reviews, cheers brother !!!
. . . good to find the diamonds !
Good on you Ralphy ..found 2 and got them. I'm off to my whiskey club tonight with this. The fabled "Maungawera Whiskey Appreciation Society" ... we'll see how it goes, but I'm happy.
Bought it today and had the first dram! I really like it! Wetted my whistle first with a tad of Glenlivet 12. The difference between the two is stark. I sadly report that affordability may be the thing of the past. I paid $88 for one bottle of Edradour Caledonia which includes the local sales tax of just above 8%. Nevertheless, it’s a price we pay to extend our horizons, thank you for the recommendation Ralfy!
I literally checked the archives yesterday to see if you'd reviewed this exact whisky...I must be in sync! Can't wait to watch!
Finally got some of this for Christmas 🎄… I really think it is excellent. I prefer the Ballenchin 10 though as it is so 🧐 profound it tastes differently as you make your way down the bottle. Thanks 🙏 and kindest regards, S.
Thanks so much for recommending this wee gem, Ralfy. I'm about 3 weeks into mine and like you said it is developing beautifully. Had my fair share of sherry and peat these last few months and this is exactly what I was looking for! I recently spent 5 times as much on a special Xmas bottle.... it isn't a patch on this Edradour. Nice job Dougie Mac also! That boy knows his drams. Slainte.
First sip of whisky at 16:48. Man, this is good storytelling! I saved this video in my whisky playlist
Just ordered a bottle and looking forward to trying maybe this Easter.
Hi ho silver!
Have been off the drink since new year.
Just bought one today. Absolutely magnificent malt.
Great whisky, great review! Just ordered my fourth bottle over the years....just a fantastic dram
Very happy to see one of my favorite malts pop up on Ralfy's reviews. This one converted a lot of my scotch-averse friends, that I can tell you.
Also, from a different world of reviews but...Yellow flannel can only mean one thing!!
Never been disappointed with an Edradour.. great looking bottles too!
Damn...... NOW for absolute sure I know I must try this Edradour 12 year..... HEY RALFY!!!! I wanted to suggest a review of a VERY WORTHY non age statement single malt----Tomatin Legacy... This was the FIRST EVER single malt I tried and it blew my mind----it remains a favorite of mine to this day.... It would be incredible to see how you respond to this NAS malt and it's spicy fruity oaky profile. It is bottled at 43% and finished in virgin oak and ex Maker's Mark barrels. Just a GREAT entry level dram and would love to hear your notes....... Have a great day sir!!!!! Slainte!
Happy Malty Monday Dear Sir! Love everything about this bottle.... your tasting notes, the bottle design, the history in the name... thanks for sharing! See you tomorrow!
I did a tour of Edradour back in April. Did the tasters, and the Caledonia was the one that stood out for me, I fell in love with it. I’m relatively new to the whisky scene, but I was very brave and bought a bottle. I’ve had it a few times since, and it intrigues me every time I drink it. It’s an exceptional whisky. I’m glad to see you also enjoyed it!
PS, a Malt Mention for you.
“Nobody expects the Malty inquisition” - Malty Python.
. . . all malt-mentions need to be 'm' dominant !
ralfydotcom My sincerest apologies!
At my regular whisky purveyor (in Australia) every time Ralfy reviews a new whisky the previously almost untouched stock is immediately sold out. International impact !
I have yet to be disappointed by a malt that Ralfy describes as difficult or not for the beginner (I'm a beginner starting about 3years ago). Of course, there were a few that I hated at first, but they became favorites. And in the process I learned to not judge a bottle by the first drams, an important lesson. And yet I still also like the easy malts. I guess that when you are excited enough about something, it carries you right past the would-be disappointments. And I've been excited from the first taste of Glenmorangie 10, three+ years ago. Thank you, Ralfy.
Burns Night here in Australia ...... what better way for me to celebrate than crack open that back up bottle of Caledonia from the back of the collection and listen to Dougie and Eddi Reader on youtube ...... slainte mhath dear ralfy.
Just bought a bottle of this today and plan on opening it at Xmas. I am an amateur looking to move up now after trying a few less complex drams over the past years. After seeing this review, the journey is obviously going to take a turn into new scenerys. The climb up the mountain will commence by Xmas time, if I can hold out after watching this very interesting review.
On trying to taste beyond the sweet sherry I think it is. I get the wood cask, the dough even before listening to this again(pat myself on the back haha), kind of a tawny note(still amateur please forgive) sort of like in the Bunnahabhain 12, cinnamon yes for sure, maybe even some nutmeg or clove(not getting this just because we are still in the holidays either), and even a bit of nervousness in there as well due to inexperience and wanting to get this right. This tasting stuff is hard and still going on whether i just enjoy drinking these great drams or not. Still just love that root scotch flavor!
I have 5 different bottles of Edradour (incl. 1 Ballechin) in my cabinet, all are very interesting and very good, big fan of this distillery.
Me thinks Ralph was a bit buzzed. Lol great video. I love the fun.
We really enjoyed the Edradour Visitor Center, the tour and the tasting. Oh, and I am in.
Hi ralfy
I hope you are doing great, I will tell you that edradour 12 year old is one of my favorites, out of 200 bottles of scotch this and springbank 15year old is my absolute favorites, I love your reviews ralfy, and I hope you never stop doing them. Cheers ralfy and keep the videos coming, we love them, oh by the way have you ever had any pittyvaich 29 year old, or 30 year old, I know where I can get it, the 29 year old is $350.00 dollars, if you have tried it before let me know, it's a closed distillery, closed in 1989 or so, take care !!!
Just finished a bottle of the Edradour 10 straight from the cask, bottled at 56.6%, lovely stuff!
This Ralfy Review was more like a Ralfy Extra than a whisky review. I'm not complaining, just saying. It was a great video. If Ralfy ever did a Live stream, I'd pour mysefl a dram and listen to him for hours...
Thanks for responding Ralfy!
I love Edradour. Just got a bottle of this. It's amazing.
I won't drink any whisky which has been matured in sherry casks but always wanted to try something from the classic Edradour distillery. Then I came across Ballechin Heavily Peated Edradour 6th Release / Bourbon Cask Matured. Oh! What pleasure. Similar to a peated version of Craigellachie with its old fashioned malt apple cider vinegery honey maltiness, Chemists smells of wooden shelves but with a tun of earthy peat. Delicious.
. . . looks like you discovered another hidden peat-treat. They do pop up now and again.
Noisen taam lifgam so its batal bishishim. (If u disagree you are not simply an am ha'aretz, rather a koifer by suggesting the gemara is incorrect in that it's not lifgam) Give it a try! It's my favorite unpeated 12 year old and my favorite non-Islay distillery along with glendronach! Great review Ralfy and thanks for giving the smaller distilleries some well deserved air time
hoooo-boy... I guess I've got an errand to run after work today.
Hi Ralfy ! Just got a bottle of this last week.... Haven't opened it yet. Looking forward to it.
After your review of Fairy Flag I ordered a bottle and it was fantastic. I really like the stuff that I have had from Edradour, I will keep a look a look out for this one.
This is one my very best and I was curious of how you would rated it ! Magnificent comments!!
Awesome review ralfy! I enjoy watching these reviews the most, the ones that have a whisky that is dear to you!
Wow. Went out and got Caledonia. Completely agree with Ralfy's review. So much wonderful personality and layers of sweet & sour. (Maybe I shouldn't have said all this publicly. Don't want all the bottles to be bought up.....)
Funny you mentioned fudge Ralfy, my first experience of Edradour was through a tin of fudge with it flavoured through it, I got from Blairgowrie. Had the 10yo and enjoyed it; but you've piqued my interest in this one big time, and who doesn't love Dougie Maclean! Will purchase directly from their shop to help them out, over someone like MoM.
I sure wish I could find this expression here... The only Edradour I ever had was a ten year old, and I was underwhelmed... I have a Ballantruan that I will try eventually!
Been there done that that....Egradour is good stuff. Remrkabke is your right on evaluation of the American taste requirements of what is required for a good value.
Egradour was my first distillery to experience and I have not looked back since. Thanks.
P
had some signatory 2002 edradour and couldnt leave it alone. i have never tasted anything like it. intriguing. mesmerizing. interesting. pleasing.
this whisky is not kidding around really well deserved mark here. great great whisky. wishing it was a bit cheaper.
One of my all time favourite drams
You never said if the whisky captured the spirit if the song or the highlands. Great song BTW. Hope you had a fire going while sipping your dram. Slainte.
Just picked up a bottle...and I think I'm in love. Funny...I am very new to single malts and I really like it better neat...not sure why. My wife also enjoyed it very much...but now I need to hide the bottle from her. :)
Well. I hadn't opened my bottle before this. Was doubting it. Now I am wondering why I kept it sealed for so long. Good stuff.
Hi Ralfy, love the reviews. I bought my brother a bottle of this on the back of the review and intend tasting it on our impending trip to the Blairgowrie area. Hope to visit this distillery while we’re up there. Keep up the fantastic work!
Really great review and insight as always Ralfy. Always enjoy the information and real life observations. An enjoyable way to unwind after a long day at work, cheers my friend.
Definitely need to find this bottle. Thanks Ralfy!
I purchased a bottle today at 84 usd, Im thinking about purchasing another bottle for the future. It was great!
Bought 2 bottles of it ,loving it
Thanks Ralfy
I'm up for the challenge Ralfy, and if it's Ralfy recommended that's good enough for me. At 65 some days I can spell anything and others. well, I draw a blank. Take care, Ossie
Ralfy. If you have a bottle of this and a bottle of recent release, do a side-by-side please.
Loved this whisky back then, then.....in 2020 bought a bottle to retock...BOOM. Terrible.
Want to be a bottle now to see if they have recaptured the brilliance this used to offer.
Can't stop playing Dougie Maclean now. Thank you for introducing me to Caledonia both the song and the whisky.
Edit: although my favorite so far is "Feel so Near".
. . . happy to share !
Ha! Didn't realize he composed The Gael used in the movie "Last of the Mohicans". Have loved that movie and song for years!
Great review, Ralfy. I really like the 10 yr, so I'll keep an eye out for this one. Thx.
Just ordered a bottle. Hopefully it will make coronavirus lock down more bearable!
I’ve seen this in the stores and been tempted to try it. Thanks
Incredible colour, I wonder what kind of casks this was matured in... Sherry ? Port ?
. . . not disclosed.
Bought it today :) Only 48 euros. Now, let's crack it open!
See you not only get to hear about good whisky here you also get to know about great music as well "Dougie MacLean" just been listening to his stuff on Spotify thanks Ralfy.
Hello all you "Malty Maltnifisents"
Ralfy is 3/4s
.took some testing this one....
I LOVE Scotch mist.. It is as beautiful as real lake side mist.
nosing: 11:27
tasting notes: 13:13
Hi Ralfy, how about the Edradour 12 Straight From The Barrel Madeira Cask?
Actually, sir, ‘twas a pesky “s” that failed the spelling of “discipline” as I recall. No matter. (Laughing) We all followed your nimble mind & inimitable Scottish brogue without missing a malty beat, trust me.
My only woe on this fine review - a 91 no less! - was the lack of anything like availability of Caledonia here in the North American Great Lakes...nearest the Internet could find me a bottle was 400+ miles away in Washington DC. A bit of a drive, that!
Ralfy, you’re the one & only. Carry on, my friend. Your vlogs are always the highlight of my day when they appear, making Mondays far more enjoyable for their presence.
“Hello, you Manic Manifested Monarchs of Malty Magnificence!”
. . . happy to help with the M-moments ! your mention is now on the M-mention List !
$70 at Binny's.
The Caledonian Sleeper is a great train ride. Go to sleep in London, wake up in the Highlands.👍
Yes. This one is excellent.
A jacket and a bonnet. If it were me, I would die from a heatstroke, Denmark that is. Otherwise drinking Pulteney, but always looking out for new favourites.
Drinking Edradour 2009-2020 SV 46% un-chillfiltered. It does smell of yeast, indeed. Not the best whisky that I've had, tbf (edited after 3rd dram, next morning: whoooa, pal! This is massive whisky! Maybe I had some better ones but nevertheless, gotta respect what Edradour is putting out at the moment! Loving it.). Heavy. Dense. Very drinkable, very enjoyable.
. . . give it lots of time, it's a savoury chamelion
10 year old USA version is bottled at 43% Ralfy, looking forward to cracking it!
That’s odd. I’ve purchased two at Total Wine (Florida) and both are 46% abv.
Bought this today on recommendation and given such high praise. Unfortunately, this one was a complete miss with me. It may be complex, maybe, but it is also simply unpleasant. To add insult to injury, the price of this here in Canada is just a few dollars higher than Lagavulin 16, and almost the same as Glenfarclas 17. I hope I will get to a point of whisky enlightenment that will make me like it!
. . . give it time, you just ned to get used to the more savoury characteristics. Let the bottle rest and try again in a few weeks. Good luck.
@@thewhiskybothy Malt mates don’t give up! Thanks for taking the time to reply, Ralfy.
It's been almost a year, and I take back everything I said previously. I just ordered the 10 and the Caledonia again, and I've really grown to like Edradour. There *was* something odd when the bottle was first opened, but as I said, now it's one of the favourites.
I've only been here 9 odd videos, but it's been worth it!
Great a review from the mouldy manx bothy malthead.!!
I enjoy your reviews very much, Mostly because you are a pedigree Scotsman (and I love your accent) as far as being a connoisseur you stand very high as honest and accurate but you do seem to have very very minor biases most notably against the larger whisky houses and/or in favor of the more rare. Of your whiskies that rate over 91 nearly all of them are not available on the ready market.....to me here in Australia at least. If I could make a little suggestion I think it would be grand if you could at a rating next to your Malt or Blend mark that lets us know how much better it is with a touch of water. eg 91 and +1 with a dash of water or if it is worse with water then say 91 - if it is just different but as good with water then perhaps you denote 91 +0, I think it is important to let your subscribers know the importance of that dash of water. Can I suggest a Malt mention "Malt Magic Maestros. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK I ENJOY YOUR COMPANY.
Great review Ralfy!
Love your insightful videos!
Slainte from South Africa 🇿🇦👏🥃!!
THE WHISKY COUCH you da Man..
I just don't get snacking whilst drinking whisky..
Is it not tasty enough?
Seriously... Love your channel..
Blow your socks off with flavor.
Not for the feint of heart at all - a lot going on there.Holy shcmokes. Thanks for broadening my horizons.
I have a bit more of an idea what you mean now Ralphie - what a reference point!
Also I checked out the bold Dougald - the lad can.
Kind regards,
Hamish
Oa, about added sugary notes: Dougy Maclean!! Ogh my word
Hi Ralfy, could you please tell me/us the bottle code and/or the bottling date of the reviewed Edradour 12yo Caledonia? Thanks very much.
Sold!
"But hang about, you shouldn't be drinking gasoline" ... my Dad says that when I try to introduce him to Islay malts. (Poor fellow, little does he realise that that statement only applies to Bowmore.)
Ralfy would you agree the Lagavulin 12yr cask strength 2016 version failed to deliver their bicentenary anniversary ?
It’s spelled disciprine imho :p
My Ballechin experience is best described as Burned licorice wood omg can still taste it :)
I say. Some one is not holding back on his opinions. Nice to see that courage 👏👍
. . . good to hear from you again Chano, your one of my 'original' malt-mates on the channel.
ralfydotcom Yes I have been exploring a bit on other flavors with port, grappa armagnac and rum. But I still keep track on whisk(e)y and your reviews.
I once wrote a request on a review on a "bad" whisky you would rate under 80/100 as a reference to good whisky. Is it something you might consider?
All for getting rid of the over use of sugar. Just don't replace it with aspartame
. . . true !
Ralfy, you mentioned Balblair, have you ever had the 10 year old, its discontinued now, what you think of it?
Malt mention from a Tasmanian Maltster: "Hello you Metrical Milton-esque Maltsters"
. . . now on the M-mention List, thanks !
Just got this for my dad today, it’s his birthday
I just bought a bottle online for $94 cdn plus taxes and shipping. Thanks for the review! Looking forward to getting woke in a malty way!
The great Louis Jordan also has a song called Caledonia.
Here it is, along with a big kampai from here in Japan.

I really love the SFTC series from edradour, especially the Ballechin SFTF port cask!
Another interesting, descriptive and educational review, cheers mate!
If I see it I'm gonna get it! Sounds great 🤘
This Ralfy database of reviews is a treasure. I'm enjoying Edradour 10 for the first time and wanted to learn more about the distillery, so I searched Ralfy's RUclips channel and of course he has me covered. I'll be purchasing a bottle (or two 😉) of the Caledonia ASAP. Cheers!
. . . your welcome.
Ralfy, you mention this is likely not something for the entry level beginner. Though, would this be something to pick up if you were so inclined and to sit on it so you can "grow into it?"
. . . yes, a bottle of spirits is never a waste of cash if you keep it till later on !
ralfydotcom well I picked up a bottle from Binnys (store) the next town over. $70usd + tax, not sure how that compares but I stuck the receipt in the box and stashed the bottle away in a drawer. 😃
Ralfy: You don't have to pay a fortune for good whiskey, one of my hobbies is finding the best "bottom shelf" bourbons.
Haven’t had the Caledonia yet but currently trying to wrap my head around the 10 and unsure what to make of it. There is a very dirty beef broth / salt aspect that remind me of vegemite or promite . It’s very odd
. . . Leave it a bit, then come back to it with a fresh palate. Edradour is a 'busy' malt which becomes an acquired taste.
@@thewhiskybothy thanks Ralfy . I’m about 12 months into my journey and love a mix of peated wines like Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte and then more rounded Plush Deanston 12 etc. the best Whisky I’ve had was in Japan, but my palate for such things was naive although I’m sure it would remain a favourite if affordable - Hibiki 17
As for this 10 year old I am enjoying it and didn’t pick up on the yeast and beef bone broth aspect until tonight . It’s not offensive as much as. Curious and mildly confronting . But usually the most appealing things in life are not immediately accessible otherwise we would fill our diets with sugar. Both dietary and artistically. Most great works are not for the masses
Anyone had any New Spirit samples from the White Peak Distillery yet?
I couldnt afford to invest in their "Temperance Club"..
Wish I could
Unusually fine dram , unmistakable absolutely gratifying , 84/100
