I think for writers transitioning out of pure academic writing, the essay-writing one can really resonate! You’re always thinking about your professor reading your work and being able to clearly understand your point, so you probably can’t go far wrong if you keep that aspect with you! Thanks 😊

I never thought I was capable of writing a decent short story but getting out of the massive writer’s block I opted to write short stories and I think I’ll even write a short story collection. 🤞🏼 this is amazing. Thanks for the advice and tips.

Thanks so much for this. I'm planning to submit my first short story to the Reedsy contest tonight! I realize I'm really struggling with making the thematic tangible. I have a stream of consciousness writing style that I'm very proud of but I find makes short story writing difficult. My first person POV inner monologues could easily take up the length of the short story at which point I'm just writing a fictionalized opinion piece or journal entry. I need to learn to take my characters inner conflicts more clear through their lived experience. I'll definitely want to watch more of your videos before I make another contest attempt.

thank you Shaelin! would you say there's more ways to maximize tension besides the character dynamics? How would you increase the tension through the setting, or the history of a place, for example? I am very interested in that ❤

Thank you. I try to keep my stories to a 10 minute read so fewer than 1500 words.
The first draft is usually a brain dump that often lands around 3k. Then I start whittling it down to a spearhead focus.
Occasionally, I'll have a bit higher word count, but only if my editor and I agree that any more cutting would detract from the story.

Thank you Shaelin...your ability to explore expression in writing craft is captivating. Specificity for that knock out punch is difficult to do with Chicago or Oxford manuals that promote temporal words of first person narratives. Perhaps your professors need to develop their craft better. Regardless you see potential importance of short stories which would enable those with voice to be able to be heard. Thanks for your great tutelage.

I have a short memoir (personal narrative) where i am quite proud of it, but it's structured oddly. I dunno. You don't get to the meat of the story until the last third. But I'm not sure how to fix it, or if i even should.
