Love it. Growing up in Broady just going to hang out at the airport on a Saturday night was always a good time. Love the Galaga game!
    Some great cars too ☺️

My dad helped to build Tullamarine back in the 1960s. He done some of the roofing on it he was a plumber. He remembers the concrete being poured on the runway. It was 2 metres thick he said.

I remember driving to the Tullamarine airport in the 1970’s as a young bloke leaving my car at the long term car park and jumping on an Ansett or TAA 727 to go to Western Australia or a Fokker F27 to shoot down to Wynyard in Tassie quite a bit to see relatives and there was Zero traffic congestion on the way there or at the airport a lot less than even what’s in this video, by the way I notice a JAT DC-10 of Yugoslav aero transport there and that DC-3 on the plinth over the car park was I think TAA’s first DC-3 from around 1948 that flew the first service for them I think to Canberra and thank god they took it down and made and restored it back to airworthiness again, yep the airport back in the 70’s was just as busy as a country towns airport today, as an aside me and my mates used to drive to Tullamarine late on weeknights when all the pubs in Melbourne used to shut at 10 pm as the international bar was open all night and we used to get a skin full sometimes that much that we used to sleep on the benches there till morning! and not once did the Commonwealth cops, the predecessors of the Federal Police question us! How times changed!

My father and i would visit this viewing area together throughout the 80s and 90s. We would always buy a gelati and watch with his old binoculars. I even worked at Airservices Australia for awhile as a radar tech before moving overseas. I miss how it was.

Anyone remember the day the first 747 landed at Tulla? Huge crowds just looking at it from any vantage point they could get. I’m thinking it was 1969 or perhaps 1970. Also used to go to the movies at the Astrojet Cinema over near the Travel Lodge. Saw Blazing Saddle there and remember laughing like mad at the Baked Beans scene. Ah memories!

Great airport back then....now its just about making money with the ridiculous price on the carpark. As a kid I'd go there and have a day out playing video games and observation deck....

@0:50 - That was probably a mini-bus to transport the cleaning crews or other workers to and from the planes, note the sliding door on the side.

I remember standing on the outdoor observation area next to the runway as a child watching dads plane take off for a business trip. Sad that the shift in societys behaviour deemed it unsafe and they closed it. Also love seeing Space Invaders and at 40c a game. I do love that the viewing area you parked at the start of the video is still in use today. Theres usually a Mr Whippie van there now plus you can see both the solar farm for the airport, and many of retired champion racehorses at Living Legends (Woodlands Homstead)

Privatising it was the biggest mistake, but maybe it was inevitable - the federal gov needed money…
