We have made a great deal with wkrk sharp for a DBK Bundle to keep you sharp at home and in the field. The ken onion with blade grinding attachment included! www.worksharptools.com/shop/uncategorized/dbk-bundle/
too bad it's only available in the US... Would have hoped for that bundle coming to EU.. Any word from WS if that will be possible? Specifically Germany would be great ;D
This is wonderful!!! Great video guys! I am the International Account Manager for Work Sharp and responsible for the sales in EU. Thank you for making this cool video! Also, great music tracks when sharpening. We should get you hooked up with the Cloth Belt Kit next time as well. Thanks again!!!
Just an extra note we did not mention: The Blade grinding attachment comes with an angle guide we personally did not use. This is very handy for people who have trouble getting their angles right. As keeping the angle is pretty much the same as you would on water stones we did not need to use it. Just saying its there!
oh, and love you all
😍 love u too
you can get rid of grind lines if you use the side with more slack
@@ijcdi7375 or use masking tape
This is the first review I've seen someone lift the heel properly instead of following the edge like the instructions say. This technique is what you need to do your BRK'S properly.
@MARTEEN Who is the hot blonde girl with implants?
I have used and loved a Work Sharp for years. You will get even better with it and faster!

Being a bark river guy and a lover of the convex edge. I have been using this set up for 2 years and I love it. Great set up. It is well worth the money.
@Gangster of Love you have to get the ken onion addition. The standard one will not work. I have seen the unit for in the $150 range. The grinder attachment is around $80 (comes with the belts). Get a strop with the needed compound and a ceramic rod. You will be around $300 for everything depending on your needs and wants. Prices will very a bit. I sharpen CPM M4 and CPM 3V all the time. But I only use the grinder for seriously dull blades or edge change/damage. Like I removed a chipped edge from one of my Elmax blades. If the edge is good and just needs some touch up then I use a ceramic rod then strop. For serious edge work I do keep a cup of water next to me and dip the blade if it is getting to warm. I then dry it and continue working. Don't run a wet blade on it. Tip I learned from bark river. You can use the finer belts for touch up work but I just use a ceramic rod and strop on my convex edges. Takes literally a min. Not worth pulling the out the grinder. Hope this helps
Yes, same here. I still use stones sometimes because I find sharpening knives on stones relaxing. But for quickness I go to the worksharp.
I’ve owned mine for about a year now. And am finally comfortable enough to use it on my Fallkniven A1. So glad I did it finally.
I purchased this a year or two ago. I wish I had not waited so long to buy it, it's friken amazing, I LOVE IT! I have arthritis and carpel tunnel and using stones is not fun any more. This makes sharpening fun, fast and easy.
I’ve been using this blade grinding attachment for the Ken Onion over the past year, and have been quite pleased. Great review.
I've had one of these for a couple of years. It works very well. It is absolutely great for kitchen knives.
These machines are no joke, they work great for getting something sharp in a pinch, I really enjoy mine! Awesome video guys
I’ve had mine for years and love it. Glad you like it!
Glad you guys reviewed this. I've been considering buying it for a while. Think I'm gonna go ahead with it now!
Honestly I started here with the WorkSharp and now am working my way to one day using water stones because it’s taught me so much about angle and sharpening
Just got this for Christmas this year. Can't wait to get to using it. Thanks for the review guys!
I do have this combo of the Ken Onion edition and have used it for 2 years now and really love it so easy and quick from doul knife to scary sharp 🔪🔪🔪🔪
I absolutely love this thing. It took me years to get good with whetstones. My first knife on this came out perfect!
Absolutely love mine!
Still love using my stones. It’s meditation for me.
Let's see how it stands up to Rex 121 steel
It won't. You need diamond or cbn for those
@@tacticalcenter8658 they got some special belts cbn and diamond or heck you could just turn it into a power strop with diamond polishing compounds granted diamond polishing to a mirror finish is a slow as heck process all depends what your looking for on a gizmo like that on that. note I've seen tons of knives sharpened on sets of 6" cardboard buffing wheels same kinda thing going on
@@ericwhite3526 diamonds are not good on belts. They have diamond belts that are only for ceramic knives. I have them and I was able to sharpen a knife in d2 61hrc. And one other knife after that and then it was toast. Cbn is super expensive and I don't think they have belts with cbn unless it has been recently. Cbn is good with belts. I don't like stropping on the Ken onion. I've had a few close calls. It can be dangerous if you make a small mistake.
just make sure you got plenty of belts, I have only ever ground Rex-121 on 2 knives on a 2"x72" belt grinder... Rex-121 eats belts ! you dont need diamond, but Rex-121 does consume meterials alot more than even M4 or S110V (2 steels that require a fair amount of work to get sharp, atleast in my experience. I haven't made blades out of everything. my favorite steel to work with is the very plain and boring 1095 or if you want stainless S35VN isnt bad at all) the 2 Rex-121 knives both Rockwelled at 70.2 & 70.4 respectively, I doubt I'll ever do another one, the price is way high and Rex-121 does chip easier that than the carbon and/or stainless steels around the 59-61 HRC mark. the toughest stuff to grind I think is actually worth working with is Bohler K390... that stuff is a pain to grind, but holds an edge like nobodys business and has decent toughness.
It would do it but would just eat belts like no tommorrow, I've done k390 and maxamet on it without to to much issues but still ate alot of the belt
Got this machine for over 4 years now and it's my on the go sharpening tool when having power. For off grid camping I've made an adapter to use the attachment belts ( or any other) for urgent blade intervention when having no power.
Some tips. run every 20-30 strokes a belt cleaning rubber for a longer belt life, also remove often grinding dust with a damp cloth for the attachment and compressed air on the machine.
Oh man boys, That's what I was going to buy to save me some time. glad y'all finally tryed one!
Love the Ken onion worksharp. Makes sharpening so very much easier
i gave up on the machine, and went to a KME which I absolutely LOVE !! But for my heavier re-profiling work I might have to try the blade grinder attachment! a proper thank you is in order boys !
Gracias muchachos, llevo años siguiéndolos, desde Chile, un gran abrazo para ustedes los hacen genial, los veo en el próximo capitulo...
yes, I'm sitting at home waiting for the DBK video to play!
"I cut down trees, I wear high heels, suspenders and a bra. I wish I'd been a girlie just like my dear Mama!"
"The sky is blue and all the leaves are green. The air's a pure as a baked po-ta-ta!"
I see you are men of culture as well.
I see you are a damn legend yourself mate
The Ken Onion is my go to sharpener. Followed by a double sided strop with two compounds. The final touches are a Flitz polish followed by mineral oil.
I’ve used this exact set up for a year, not perfect but it is pretty badass and my go to sharpener. Stoked to see you partner with BladeHQ hop to see you on Knife Banter!
Thank you DBK, i have been sharpening all knives on my 1x30 beltgrinder with grits 120/240/800/1500 and finishing with buffing compound on a MDF wheel and cloth to get amazing results fast and consistant. I still hear alot of people asking me wether the steel doesn't get ruined by overheating, this video should give people more confidence in the electric sharpening capabilities. P.s. i would grind a true scandi on waterstones as well
I have used a small belt sander but this seems more viable since you can adjust the speed. Great video DBK.
I love mine. Excellent customer service also
I have used worksharps for years they're great.
Great video guys. I own one without that style of attachment that you have and I think your version is better. I bought it because I wasn’t good at sharpening and it will get the job done in a timely manner. I still like sharpening on stones a bit better but maybe I should get that style of attachment. Thanks guys!! Killin it as always! I’m out ✌🏽
I have one and I really don't regret buying it. I use it for knives and for other projects, it is in essence small belt grinder with flat wall and angle adjustments. Yes, the main trick is not to run it too fast and not to ruin knife tip or overheat it. Ones you figure it out, you will get very good results. I think the next step up is only Tormek or something like it....
The intro on this one is quite brilliant. Also im considering getting one of these work sharps and the attachment for my knife collection, and some axes!
Had one for several years now, they are awesome
I have one. It is great for convex edges. Don't push hard on the belt. Your angle will increase dramatically.
Love my Worksharp, it is amazing!
“Pooping without force” gets me every time!!
Wranglerstar has been shilling this for a while. Guess you guys are finally on board! If I ever decide to spend any significant money on knife sharpening, this will be what I get; it seems so much easier than other options and the outcome always looks awesome.
Whaaaaaaaa I never thought the DBK boys would deviate from the beloved waterstones. Very good and clearly unbiased review. Thumbs up my friends.
Yes it‘s true.
My long used waterstones didn‘t see the light since I got this machine (with attachment).
Easy to use.
Great control even for folders with thumb pins.
Low speed, low heat, no stains.
Fun use with absolute serious results in minimum time.
No complaintsat all, but be careful with the tip - , practicing with a cheap knife is recommended.
Stropping belts are available, they work, but i do it old fashioned way, it‘s more contemplative and even more useful for a mirror polish, i think.
All in all an astonishing alternative to good (and expensive) waterstones, but keep in mind that you need replacement belts sometimes.
Results shown in the video are absolutely reproducible.
As said, I don‘t use my waterstones any more.
Trust DBK.
i have mine like 3 years, and i love it
Love my worksharp ken onion with blade attachment,, excellent results, so easy to keep perfect, highly recommend. Get their strop belt, makes phenomenal finish. Use a jewelers loope to ensure edge is fully perfect. When reworking edges, you will go through the roughest belts at higher rates than finer. Epic sharpness. Not very good for scandi though, unless you want convexed sides. Some limitations with certain grips/handles when handle is on left side of belt. Using it in the basic config, without the blade attachment, its ultra easy to mess up tips, beware.
Got a hapstone for scandis, but even with the expensive diamond plates, even with coarse grits, it can take up to 8 hours for one knife. Wish there was a better way for scandis.
Cool Video 👍
Thank U for the Info and the Links 👍
Will definatelly buy one..👍
Hey, guys! Great demo! Thanks!
"It's as easy as pooping without force" is going to have to be my new saying lol
Worksharp makes a strop for the blade grinding attachment and I believe it comes with 2 different compounds so 2 belts with 2 different compounds
Yep two leather belts and a white and green compound
@@dabeerguy79 Two cloth ones too, I find them better than the leather which tends to stretch and become loose.
@@dabeerguy79 They are cloth now, they haven't made the leather version for a few years now although there are a few aftermarket versions available in leather if you really want that.
@@Riyame ya I bought the aftermarket ones and they came with 2 bands and 2 different compounds
I bought the ken o. edition with the attachment because i couldn´t find a good way to sharpen "recurved" Blades.
I have the SOG Fatcat and I tried almost everything.
With the blade grinding attachment it´s a matter of minutes.
Love that thing and use it for almost every knife now.
I missed you guys, it’s been a while since I’ve seen such a fresh video.
Too funny, I sharpened 25 knives with this system last night. I was thinking "Hmmm, does DBK really think water stones are better than this? Have they tried this?" Both have a place in my heart, but for sharpening a lot of knives this thing is where it is at!
Couldn't agree more. I still like stones of I'm only doing 1 or 2 knives but any more then that I grab the work sharp...or if its a steel that it's super wear resistant like an m4 I'll use thework sharp
I love my blade grinding attachment but it has a few quirks. One is that on the drive gear/wheel there is a rubber 0-ring that grabs the belt to rotate it. You can see the black mark in the middle of the belt at 2:56 that is caused by this. This can break with use or if it gets old and dry. Some black electrical tape wrapped around the wheel will work just as well and is much easier to find than a tiny o-ring.
There are also cloth or leather stropping belts that you can get to put a final crazy edge on blades. As you go up higher in the grits you use less and less pressure to the point where the blade weight itself is enough.
I have the regular version(not Ken Onion). I think it is great but it does have the potential to scratch the blade specially if it is another type of grind or if it has a coating so if you care about the appearance of your knife then that's something to consider. The other thing is that if you don't follow the instructions properly you can end up rounding the tip.
I absolutely love mine.
I've used it for a couple of years now. I get my knives VERY sharp, VERY quickly. I'll never sharpen a knife any other way again. I would be in the market for a higher quality version, however -- and a larger selection of belts. BTW, in case you didn't know, one can turn the CLOTH belts inside out and then use them for spray or paste assisted honing.
The Ken Onion guide system is tough to work with. When you get to the tip it’s difficult not to slip and then you have to repair the damage you did. If you use it just like a belt grinder it’s easier to control. You guys use it like I do.
Sharpening is like cooking food. The slower you do it, the better the result. Nothing beats water stones sharpening. Also, Sharpening is a lot of knowedge and tons of experience.
Or ping it through the work sharp or use the kme and you can achieve more that good enough results quicker, when a knife can trim a hair into a few bits it's sharp enough me thinks, time is energy dude and not everyone has the time to learn to be a skilled sharpener
@@halfbaked3373 Then stay on cheap knives, because without that experience and knowedge, anybody, can destroy any knife using belt grinders.. PS This system, will cost more than waterstones.Keep in mind, that it doesn't last much before it breaks and until then, you have to spend a lot of money on overpriced belts...
@@greekveteran2715 a knife is just a piece of metal don't make it more than it actually is sharpening isn't much of an elite skill just a skill that's lost to most people because they don't need it yeah belts are costly but it's faster you stab someone they won't know the difference between the quality of the sharpness lmao
I like it great review guys. This looks like it would make creating knives from raw steel much quicker.
Oh cool do you do that? Make knives from raw steel..? How do you cut out the shape of your knife? Sorry jsut wanting to get into it and tryin to learn wut I can from ppl who do it.
@@badmfthompson7820 I mostly use a 4-in angle grinder to cut the shape out. I do not do any forging or anything but I do heat treat them when I'm done. I'm no expert though there are tons of videos on it.
@@badmfthompson7820 I have a couple knives I've made recently. I did videos on them somewhere if you were to dig around my video pile bud.
Hello Mikkie and Marteen, This has been on the market for at least 4 yrs.(ish), "I've been waiting for you to review it - WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG"???🤨 I'm glad you liked it, for sure.👍 But why didn't you use the attachment to sharpen the blades?😱 Is it because you actually know how to sharpen knives anyway?🤔 If I tried to sharpen a bullish blade, I'd certainly make it dull!!!🙄 I've neuropathy in my hands and L arm doesn't work well.😯 I hope that all's well with everyone/thing. Keep up the good work and keep these vids coming!🧐 Have fun and be safe, take care, "God Bless", sincerely, Randy. 👍👍🙏🏻😇👊
I also have this Ken Onion sharpener with the blade grinder attachment and I’m very happy with its speed and performance for its price. 👍 ... But just be careful with sharpening some of the high end “super steels” out there. I tried sharpening one of my Spyderco Maxamet knives and completely wore out a nearly brand new set of of belts with just that one blade (& wasn’t even completed with that set). It was only about a $20 learning replacement mistake but still annoying to have to wait for a new set to arrive in the mail. Otherwise with most other steels, this is a great machine and use it pretty often over my much slower (but more precise) Wicked Sharp sharpener.
Sounds great! 👍😁
Nice start, singing the Lumberjack song! I love that one! Yes, I've watched plenty of Monty python movies and show.
if you want to do a true scandi..get the Rigid belts..they are rediculously good..
Work Sharp kicks a$$ at everything they make. They're owned by the same group that makes Drill Doctor for resharpening twist drill bits - I've had one of those for around 14yrs now - paid for itself several times. I've got a Ken Onion edition work sharp but not the blade grinder attachment featured here - have had that for 5yrs now... it's incredible - I put green honing compound on the superfine belt and strop with it...yeah...sharp! Last year I bought a Work Sharp WS3000 for sharpening woodworking tools (chisels and plane blades) - that thing is legendary. And most recently I bought the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener which... frankly...is astonishing...well worth the money ($28) I can go from no edge at all to popping hair off rather quickly. Thank you guys for reviewing this!
Only complaint I have on the field sharpener is I hate the strop. To hard and to rough to be good inn my opinion
@@zleggitt1989 I agree...sort of. I noticed it was dry and rough myself so I added a bees wax based leather conditioner that I use on my boots...then I added the green honing compound... very happy with it
@@jensdavidsen4557 I used green compound and it didn't help..i didn't condition it prior though.I'll have to try that
@@zleggitt1989 hey I hope it works out for you - I completely agree that out of the box the leather is dry but oil or leather conditioner can fix that.
Having the whole Ken onion setup i will say its great for kitchen knives but on my 2 pocket knifes (microtech socom and a benchmade mini bugout) I enjoy my spyderco stones better
Nice video. Thank you for sharing it. :)
Hello from Russia! Thank you, guys, for yours video!
own a ken onion and i never look at stones again for the knifes i own. great show guys
I have a Ken onion and it sits in a box. I use a edge pro or hapstone with diamond stones.
On mine. I get a perfect 10\10 fire steel spine by holding the knife perfectly still on the wheel. Pointed in line with the belt. It makes a U shape on the blade. For more aggressive fire steel edge don't hold it at 90 degree. Hold More at like 100 degrees. If right-handed. Put point away from body, handel towards body blade up. Tilt blade a little to the left just a little. The sparks are crazy. Works great on a morah
there is a stropping belt kit for the grinder attachment, would be good to see your thoughts on that to
very good video dudes!! nice
When y’all restocking store? I’m trying to get some spray and a strop
KME with convex rod is what I use (Mike Stewart of BRK recommends this) but I'd pick this if that wasn't available.
Glad you guys like it, Ive had mine for about a year and im pretty happy. 2 tips for anyone thinking about getting one, 1: read the instructions first and 2: when one of the belts wears out put some stropping compound on it and use it as a stropping belt.
Love my Ken Onion
Great video also im curious how good this would work on an axe
guys i'm pretty sure you can sharpen true scandy if you press the edge against the part of the belt that's above the flat support piece just like a regular belt sander.
I love my belt grinder, but I always finish honing on a stone.
You guys should give the Swedish Tormek grinder a go. Its a watercooled wheelstone.
Cost a bit more but build to last.
@Timur Oezer it is v, almost concave, but if its a downside is personal taste. Its sharper the convex but not as strong, but you can have a more Blunt angle and still get it sharp and strong. With Good Steel i prefer concave, on a Axe or softer Steel i would prefer convex
I knew you were going to have to use a belt after trying to sharpen that Rex 121 blade last week.
Have you guys tried the Brother F005 knife? Seems like a great knife for the price!
Any chance you can do a follow up on how you do convex edges on the blade grinding attachement? i have a lot of trouble with it and always seem to have a small part of untouched steel in the middle of my grind.
That grinder isn't bad. I have that same setup. I use it if I want a quick edge to use but I don't think anything can replace a good waterstone
I think this has more capabilities since the belts are slimmer, you can do recurve a lot easier and time efficiency isn't even close I still use and love my stones but if I have to sharpen more then 1 or 2 blades I'm grabbing the work sharp
@@zleggitt1989 it also has its limits. Doesn't do very well with the very hard steels. Naniwa diamond stones are very nice with hard super steels.
@@hamedizzy5137 I actually disagree..i think it works well with harder steels.i use it on my bark river bravo in m4 and it works great. I've used dmt diamond stones and they work but it takes a long time
@@zleggitt1989 Dmt diamond stones is very old technology. You need to try the naniwa diamond stones. M4 is not that hard to sharpen. Try sharpening REX121 with the work sharp. You'll go through a set of belts for 2 knives. And forget about reprofiling.
@@hamedizzy5137 I've never tried it but I heard of you buy diamond strop spray and load up the belt it works well..again I've only heard about it never tried it
Hey Dbk!, please get a leather honing belt and it needs to only be used with compound
Some steels like 3V temper at 1050f so it’s gonna be hard to ruin a temper, but still possible of course!
@dbk if you really want to get it scary sharp get a leather strop belt for it (they make them for the blade grinder attachment) then put the bark river .5 micron (32,000 grit) cbn emulsion on it. You will achieve wicked edges lol.
It was a bit difficult to find all needed attachments on the website. Can you change the link so we can get your exact setup?
I have one too, it's a great machine with great results but I advise everyone to always use a dust mask, even outside. The fine dust from the sanding belts is harmful for your lungs! Thank you for the nice clip 😊
Black & Decker power file may do the same ?
Liked within 40 seconds. Intro acting on point.
Had mine a few years, never though of putting it on the lowest angle and freehand it, late night obnoxious sharpening here i come!
DBK finnaly have big brain time btw while using it you guys know you can contract pneumonia from the metal particle getting in it good luck
Watch out using that sharpener! There is a learning curve. It is really easy to grind your tip off! The guide also leaves scratches on the flats of your knives! I just reviewed several sharpener and this was my 3rd favorite and I use it on knives that I don't care about. I would not use it on one of my custom knives that I make!
I am quite satisfied with mine, but there's a learning curve, reading the instructions is very important, you really have to be careful with a few things, e.g. how long you grind each side, it's easy to get an uneven edge and/or tip if you don't grind each side for exactly the same time. And when using the guide, you'll ruin your tip if you don't stop the belt at the right time. Also important; watch out for dust, wear a mask. Faster speed only needed for complete overhaul of blade. The only thing keeping me from sharpening more often is the noise (almost as noisy as my vacuum) and the fact that since I watch DBK I only buy and use super-steel knives...
Lol the lumberjack song from Monty python!! Love it!!
This is a doodad I've been curious about for a while. Now review a kephart style knife!
If you have to do a lot of knives(maybe entire kitchen knife set)this thing is a life saver. If your doing 1 knife and have plenty of time I still prefer stones because they don't take as much metal off but I still love this device even without the grinding attachment
I have the ken onion work sharp. I don’t like it. It is not good. The cord sucks.
I don’t have the blade grinding attachment. I’m sure it’s better with it.
i just bought this yesterday wait for it in the mail i use my knife for work and it gets dull often
So, I have the regular worksharp. It can change the angle of the belt (so that it can be flat instead of more vertical orientation).
Would this work, and if not, why? The Ken onion obviously is nicer since it has wider and longer belts, but is the regular grinder not good enough?
Great video guys, I have one and still prefer to use a stone, i prefer the control from slow and steady, worksharp has its pros, just not for me 👍
Have you guys tried the Work sharp tilting Guided Sharpening System?
You guys should make a guide on how to turn a v edge into a convex edge
My hearts as warm as a baked potatah!
