      No you wouldn't. The length of prison sentences does little to deter crime. Crime might even go up instead. If I know I'll go to prison for the rest of my life anyway, why should I care about what else I do?
      The prospect of getting caught more effectively deters crime. Not the length of the prison sentence. Most criminals assume they will get away with it.

    • @TheSfelex
      @TheSfelex 8 месяцев назад +8

      @@jcsjcs2 how many cases we have here where the suspect turns to be fresh out of prison, or a previous criminal that had a comically low sentence and walked out to start again.

    • @St.JohnWort
      @St.JohnWort 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@TheSfelex, That isn't deterring crimes, that is preventing further crimes and is based purely on speculation of what the convicted criminal might do after they are released. You can't just say if we increase their sentences it will deter crime and then say that it is really about keeping recidivists in prison.
      First off, statistical data on crime prevention has found through multiple studies that increased sentencing standards do not have a correlation with the reduction of crimes. That makes sense logically, because what criminal asks themselves "what is the ramifications of my actions today, what is the standard sentencing for voluntary manslaughter"? It doesn't happen, criminals aren't asking themselves that question, they don't care because they believe they won't be caught in the first place. What has been found to have a correlating effect on reducing criminal behavior is the risk of being caught by law enforcement. Crime tends to decrease with greater enforcement against said types of crime.
      Second, your argument that keeping them in prison reduces crime isn't really correct either. There are a few problems with that assessment:
      majority of crimes are committed by young males, the vast majority of problematic young males that are not in prison far outnumber the ones in prison, and it would be far too expensive to house every one of them in prison. disregarding the draconian impression it has to put away every single young male that has ever committed a single crime into prison for decades just because it would "prevent" crime.
      Long-term recidivism rates for all crimes in the US are relatively low, so the overall impact of ubiquitously keeping all these criminals, many of whom won't go on to commit another crime, in prison for an extended period of time just because maybe 10% will continue committing crimes would be overwhelmingly negative.
      Even if you do extend prison sentencing, of which the US already has some of the highest criminal sentencing standards in the western world yet also some of the highest crime rates in the western world, they have to be released at some point. I can assure you that the US prison system is not for rehabilitation, it is for punishment. The longer you are in prison the higher the probability of you becoming institutionalized, and once you are out, you have to start from the beginning; you won't have any valid ID, you will be in your 40s+, you will probably not have many family/friend connections, any education you might have had besides your GED/high school diploma will be worthless after 10 years, and you will have some kind of felony making it even harder for you to even get an interview much less a job.

      If you created a town of 8 people you may have 1 nut case among them. And even if there is no nutcase, crimes of passion is a thing where people kill out of anger in a moment. But sticking with the legit evil or psychotic folks for a moment, those 8 people will create more people who create more people who can do these things, and the more people the more opportunity there is for this to happen.
      WHY? More mentally ill people, more social influence, and the like. Before TV and Social media, murderers and psycho's existed, so it's not just the influence doing it, BUT today, these things make it worst. Parents ignore the signs, parents are less involved, they throw their kids in Public school 8 hrs a day and use school as a Daycare or Proxy Baby Sitter, kids and society are a little more violent, we consume things we should not and think it has no impact on us, kids are more immature and susceptible to things like this, all of this contributes to this, even in a small town.
      Take the flaws of mankind and ramp it up to 100 with lack of guidance. Whether we admit it or not, culture and beliefs in ones home is important. not just for personal growth, but for community and wholesome society. People honestly think we can just have this attitude of "let people do whatever so long as they don't hurt others" attitude and that's going to fly, it doesn't and it never has. Some ideas, some views, some lifestyles are detrimental to to society.

You can't blame the parents for the children's choices everytime. Sometimes it really is the parents fault. But this doesn't seem like one of those cases. It seems like a decent kid who chose the wrong path. He dad doesn't influence his desires to be "gang gang" or truly have the ability to stop that behavior. He can give all the lectures and discipline he wants but if the kid wants to be a waste of oxygen, he will.

    Holy hell. Wow. Thank you for covering this interrogation. I attended middle school with Erick. Although I never knew him past then and into high school, he was absolutely not a friendly person to know unless you were in his friend group. Would constantly taunt and threaten people, and I found myself bullied by him quite a few times for no apparent reason other than the fact that I wasn't a friend of his. I still vividly remember him and his friend group (at the time) sitting behind me in math during the 6th grade and him throwing slurs and names at me. I quite seriously did nothing but exist. But since I had existed right in front of him in front of his eyes, he felt it was justified. We shared multiple classes together throughout 6th-8th, and he was nasty from the start and never seemed to get any better. He never showed any remorse for the pain he caused other people. Erick found it fun. Getting reactions from people for the horrid things he did is what he craved. I don't think I ever personally witnessed kindness from him towards another person, even towards his personal friend group or the teachers. We were 11-12 when we met. The fact that he got so much worse in only roughly 5 years is still insane to think of. I also knew David Grunwald, so you can imagine my shock when my mother told me the update she saw that stated David had been killed and Erick had been arrested. The story of what happened to David still haunts me to this day. It really impacted me in a way I never thought any local crime would. It got way too personal and hit way too close to home. Me and David were the same age. 16 years old. It's forever haunting. Just felt like I needed to share more about Erick based on what I experienced with him first hand.

      I think they are required to roll the cameras throughout the entire time the suspect is sitting there, however since a common tactic is to just leave the suspect sitting there in anticipation, this makes for very long videos. My guess is they would either have to make SERIOUS storage investments (building a server to store all of this data onsite), cut parts of the video out, or reduce the resolution and audio quality. Since they most likely didn't have the budget to build a datacenter and weren't willing to simply get rid of the information because it could be vital, they chose to reduce the resolution and audio quality (at least that would be my best guess because the same thing is true with most businesses)
