Oliveira's run at Katowice was pretty damn inspirational. Time has always been one of those guys you see in a bracket, you expect him to play well, he's a fantastic player, he's just a tier below Serral, Maru, Reynor, Dark, Her0, etc. Then when the pressure was on, tons of money on the line, and having never won a premier tournament before he absolutely crushes it. He dropped lots of maps, he barely scraped by a couple of those series, but he pulled it out in the end. World champion. I was cheering so hard for him in those finals. Reminds me of how insanely excited i was to see Serral win Blizzcon back in 2018. I love this game so much.
I hated that part... its makes zero sense to me... sure Oli had high ground vision BUT the ghosts were on the low ground sniping lurkers on the high ground burrowed... how the hell did bullets that go in a straight line curve like a rainbow into the lurkers burrowed up top??? Zero sense is made there... zero... Also I kinda hate ghosts, their steady targeting needs a big nerf, they shouldn't be able to one shot every top tier unit with very very few exceptions. Either a longer channel time, energy consumption, or drop in dmg is needed imo. Ghosts are still a tad too strong, any equivalent unit to the ghost has no where near the strength of utility and the power of super high single target dmg output... like viper/infester are really strong casters but they don't have an instant kill ability, sure High Templar are strong and have good area control as well as energy removal like the ghost but they can't insta kill like the ghosts... Ghosts can cloak, insta kill, remove energy, AND drop nukes that also one shot damn near everything...oh and ontop of that the only thing that requires research to unlock for the ghost is cloaking and its pretty cheap... nukes are cheap, Ghosts aren't super expensive and require no additional researches like other big heavy hitters do to do full dmg. Like ok they need to research cloak and make a nuke to fully utilize Ghosts, meanwhile to fully utilize hydra/lurker you MUST get 4 upgrades otherwise they hit like a wet noodle and can hit like only like 3 feet away and they also require multiple buildings/building upgrades, Ghosts only require 1 additional building besides their production structure and 1 upgrade to be godly... Ghosts really need a small tweaking to bring their raw natural power down a touch and more in like with other units of similar standing. At least they shouldn't be able to one shot things like Lurkers, Ultras, and Broodlords... big chonky units should take at least 3 snipes to kill not one... in the long run at the top of the ladder it wouldn't make too much of a difference but it wouldn't allow, like now, a small ball of 10-15 Ghosts to absolutely annihilate an opposing army in a fraction of a second...
Oliveira is playing rock solid at the moment. I was speechless for an hour after watching the conclusion of IEM live. I tried to find some luck-related explanation for his winning over those giants like HerO and Maru, but hell no there was any luck factor involved. You know what I’ve found as a good strategy if you micro well and are Protoss (vs Terran or Zerg)? Having 6 high templars. You can always turn them into 3 archons after as necessary. So I am only in silver league, so I’m no expert obviously but I’ve had it work for me. If you use Psionic Storm with 3 and 3 simultaneously to a bottle necked group of Terran (organic) or Zerg you will massacre an entire army in seconds with the support of void rays (I know the stereotypical unit for Toss). I usually have 6-12 High Templar’s, 3 Warp Prisms, 6 sentries, a dozen void rays, 4 colossus and 6 Immortals. That’s not exact numbers but it’s close. So I use the sentries to obviously create shields for my ground army, and I also take probes to with me to sneakily warp in pylons everywhere so I can build shield batteries to retreat to or have in proximity to my fighting. If I’m able to be extra sneaky I’ll build a nexus as close as possible to the main area with shield batteries surround it so I can battery overcharge plus have the other ones support. I don’t know like I said I’m not even gold, but it’s worked for me. I’m sure there are a million counters to my methods for people even in silver but more often than not that combination of things works well….once again primarily against organic Terran or Zerg. I just finished a game where they had 12 ultras, hydras, and corrupters/mutas….and I turned on prismatic alignment to hammer the ultras while storming them and the air units. Let me know if you think it’s a stupid set up or your thoughts. I would probably get annihilated in gold league or higher every time but at the lower tiers I’ve had it be pretty effective. Obviously everything is maxed out with all upgrades and all abilities they have available. Oh ya I didn’t mention the warp prisms but I figured it was implied…I use them for warping in more high templars or massive zealots (I usually have 12 warp gates).
