I was a fan of the original SG on NES but I was too young to figure out most of it back in the early 90s. I didn't get around to playing SG64 until 2006. I had read mostly negative reviews about it but I decided to see for myself. I absolutely loved the atmosphere of the game and all the lore to discover. While not an amazing game it is definitely unique and great for anyone wanting something not action-oriented. I'm disappointed the proposed sequel was never completed.
I agree. One game that comes very close to the atmosphere of this game is Kingsfield 4 on PS2. The music in Kingsfield 4 is eerily similar too. Kingsfield 4 is more first person action though compared to this being more puzzle based.
Ah, good old SG64. One of my old time faviorits from N64. Sure, it is slow pace and yeah doesnt have action. But man the lore and story telling were on a whole another level. Its the type of game were you appreciete more with age. Also the original on the nes and apple 2 were great as well. I have played the remake but it looks good.
Honestly, this game just came out at a bad time. The N64 was well know for more action filled games. Having watched another walkthrough of this game, I think Shadowgate 64 has great atmosphere, complimented by a great soundtrack.
I used to rent this game from Blockbuster when it came out. I thought it was amazing, especially its art style and “mood”. Excited to relive it again. Kemco had some great games.
@@NintendoComplete Of course. Spy Vs Spy was the first “death match” game I ever played and Top Gear Overdrive was so good with an incredible grunge soundtrack. The sense of speed in that game felt amazing.
Welcome to YET another fine game and its IP killed by Urunalist ...the same can be said about Excalibur 2555 A.D. and its two versions NTSC and PAL ...
How have I not heard of this? I am a King's Field fanatic and while not an action oriented game, just the fact of how much it looks like Kings Field has me watning to play it.
Oof, if this was an adventure game, why all the complaining about the adventuring? What a shame this didn't get more love back then! I don't mind games like this at all. (But for the record, the worst review I've ever read was arguably one complaining about a Kirby game being too easy--I believe it was "Kirby's Epic Yarn", too, which was _specifically_ designed to be easy for young children.) Can't believe Halloween is only 2 days away at this point! I hope everyone is having a Happy October!
Haha! Seriously? Sakurai has always said that Kirby was meant to be easy. That's like complaining because a Castlevania game was hard. Some people, huh? 😆
Certainly, (albeit i'm pretty late answering to this comment) visual adventure games were too underappreciated back then. Nowadays there are many games that are like this game given how people have become more open minded with a genre like this. At least that's what i personally believe.
1:21:25 This section always made me chuckle. Like there's perfectly fine good quality weapons in the rack... and Del for some reason gravitates towards the only broken equipment... on the floor... TWICE 🤣
This playthrough feels really tedious. Almost 40 minutes in, and only 2 puzzles were solved, 3 if you count using the Pickaxe to climb and break the ceiling. So many books.
All it would take is a single sample with the tail looped to make the sound last however long they needed it. Snes music did things the same way. An n64 cartridge had plenty of room for long samples, though, so who knows?
Oh my god i played this game when i was kid i tried so hard to know the name i can't believe i found it... I though i was just being delusional at certain point haha
turbonerd ? Otherwise I think that those who know the game simply knew it at the time (either the Nes or N64 version), which is the case for me, I had the game on N64 and I have good memories of it.
Well there are several Fantasy races n creatures in SG64, there are Dwarves, Ghosts, Wizards, a Gold Dragon n The Final Boss which is a Dark Demon called Talimar
This was an awful game even back then when I first played it. All the game was about really were fetch quests of books and opening hundreds of doors with tiny rooms and just no adventure in it. The original point and click game was far superior to this and the remake of the original is even better than the original which it had large shoes to fill!

I just found the name of this game on Reddit. It's been driving me crazy for years. Fantastic game from my teenage years.
Great ost by Saori Kobayashi.
She also did the ost several of the Panzer Dragoon games.
This game aged like fine wine
Yes, I agree completely. I have played it many times over the years.

Shadowgate 64 was for me personally one of the best games i have ever played.
I have not found another game yet with such an amazing atmosphere.

Kings Field maybe up your alley. Early from software and while not many puzzles like this, the atmosphere is haunting
Kingsfeild.
Same here. There is just no other game out there that is like shadowgate 64.
SG64 definitely seems to have a great atmosphere. Also, consoles seem to do adventure games very well. It's a shame that there weren't more on them.
As cool as Beyond Shadowgate was, I much preferred this game for its puzzles and the atmosphere.
Atmosphere was the strongest vibe of this game, I loved the music tracks very much, it felt like being in another pleasant humble world.
i agree + his sound track is very good for the imerssion in game very good effect
Yall ever played the nes version?
@@eyes2see167 Excellent. Also great chiptunes.
Still never finished this. So I'm going to watch you do it 😂

What a creepy fever dream this game was.
Love this game so much for its atmosphere!
I liked this quite a bit more than I expected. There's something about it that just sucks you right into its mysterious medieval 64-bit world.
Just Finished Shadowgate 64 this game is a underrated Hidden gem of game! The Game reminds me alot of Eternal Rings, Kings Field n Kings Quest
Honestly, this game just came out at a bad time. The N64 was well know for more action filled games. Having watched another walkthrough of this game, I think Shadowgate 64 has great atmosphere, complimented by a great soundtrack.
If this were on any other system I think this would be a huge hit. Especially if it were out on PC...
I used to rent this game from Blockbuster when it came out. I thought it was amazing, especially its art style and “mood”. Excited to relive it again. Kemco had some great games.
They seriously did. Remember Top Gear and Spy vs Spy?
@@NintendoComplete Of course. Spy Vs Spy was the first “death match” game I ever played and Top Gear Overdrive was so good with an incredible grunge soundtrack. The sense of speed in that game felt amazing.
@@NintendoComplete I forgot about another really good Kemco game - Desert Commander for the NES.
This would be cool if this game gets announced for Nintendo Switch Online.
If it comes to Nintendo switch online I think it will get a new life and reputation so I would be excited for it to come!
Holy cow I knew this game was real! I remember watching my brother play the intro and for years I couldn’t figure out what it was called.
This is atmosperic game, this so amazing.
I’m not sure about the gameplay, but this is some of the best graphics and animation I’ve ever seen on the N64. That music isn’t bad, either.
Welcome to YET another fine game and its IP killed by Urunalist ...the same can be said about Excalibur 2555 A.D. and its two versions NTSC and PAL ...
Honestly the major strong point of the game is clearly his Sound Track i think personnaly
Can't believe I missed hearing about this one. I would have loved this back in the day.
How have I not heard of this? I am a King's Field fanatic and while not an action oriented game, just the fact of how much it looks like Kings Field has me watning to play it.
I have my copy of this game still & it is a great adventure game for sure.
I was completely unaware that this game even existed. Huh.
Finally found this. Played it as a kid

I thunk that when somthing is more easy is more accesible

love this game, my brother my cousin and I used to pass it in just over an hour!!! the best of N64
has a sorta king's field vibe to it
1:21:25 This section always made me chuckle. Like there's perfectly fine good quality weapons in the rack... and Del for some reason gravitates towards the only broken equipment... on the floor... TWICE 🤣
As a Child i was always scared about this game xD i tried it multiple Times.
10:33 familiar sound effect
Where from
Lol love this game as a kid, thank you for this video!
I really appreciate your channel 🙏🏻
Can we request Nintendo to add this game to the online thing for switch??
They Should ad all n64 games.
I seriously can't believe i skipped this when it came out. The music sounds great, like FF XII.
This playthrough feels really tedious. Almost 40 minutes in, and only 2 puzzles were solved, 3 if you count using the Pickaxe to climb and break the ceiling. So many books.
This reminds me of how I wish the book text just appeared over the game and you could move and read.
Never got out of that jail cell as a kid so I retuned it😂
How does it play such long piano notes? No way it has the space for that.
All it would take is a single sample with the tail looped to make the sound last however long they needed it. Snes music did things the same way. An n64 cartridge had plenty of room for long samples, though, so who knows?
10:15 where I got stuck at. Didn't know you could interact with the pillar so I tried to swim and drowned
wtf I never knew this existed
This game used to scare the shit out of me as a kid.
Oh my god i played this game when i was kid i tried so hard to know the name i can't believe i found it... I though i was just being delusional at certain point haha
Spooky game.
Dang you have to be a turbonerd to have played a game like this! I've never even heard of this game, so now I feel like I have to play it :-P
turbonerd ?

@@yamazakikaoru9579 lol yeah seems like a game only the most dedicated gamer would know about
Amazing
GRACIAS
I did not know this existed! It seems shadowgate changed things up in its sequels? I only know the ones game
That Vid Is So Sick I Wanna Play It Lol 😀
I never knew there was a Shadowgate game for the N64. What?
Del: *dies if he drops down three feet*
The first puzzle of the game: *dropping down a dark hole to god knows where*
..........Nice logic, game-
good one Nintendo
Played that game at the age of 8 i dont think that was healthy😂
No action killing? Make Castlevania 64 and Doom 64 atmospheric much fun.
Is there anyone else here who prefers this game over Paper Mario 64?
All this game needed is less slow book reading and more King's Field-like monsters to fight, and this game would of been truly great!
Well there are several Fantasy races n creatures in SG64, there are Dwarves, Ghosts, Wizards, a Gold Dragon n The Final Boss which is a Dark Demon called Talimar
Okay game atleast
Good game
The game itself is purely puzzle. If only there's action to it then it will not be boring
Olá, sou brasileiro 🇧🇷👍🏿
