Hi Sean. The very first trick (using the free cut principle) is nearly identical to a trick published by John Carey in his book, "The Carey Files". John's trick is called Finnell as I Finnell! (page 22). There are a few minor differences (mostly presentational), but the method and effect are practically identical.

The first one is the free cut principle by Gene Finnell, and the other one is just a variant of that old math trick everyone does (the one where four random cards are chosen and you use them to count up to 13, and at the end, the final card is the number of cards left…) That old trick goes all the way back to Modern Magic published in 1876!
