I bumped into Rob at Reef Galleria about 2 months ago. What a lovely guy we chatted for ages. He told me he had an 8foot tank but didn't tell me about all the gear he has on it. He has jumped in with both feet, good on him. Cant wait to see your tank in 12 months Rob. And keep getting advice from the right people (Sam Parker) and you can't go wrong. Get video Sam.
@@MrCites1 it takes a special kind of crazy to build a 400 gal tank (550gal system) as a first tank. I thought I was the only lunatic that would attempt something like that. Nice to know I’m not alone. 🤪

That black or golden rim tang is hotttttttt. Amazing tank his first tank looks like my dream tank. Quit an overkill on dosing and calcium reactor for soft and lps coral hopefully it will be good use in future when this tank fill of spssss
Great tank Robert , for goniopora I recommend adding manganese and iron helps with their metabolism and polyp extension. It gets used up very quickly if running refugium, algae reactor , confirmed this with icp testing, I have 9 gonis oldest 5 years . I’d also recommend buying your own mng ( mnSO4 . 4H20) powder from pharmaceutical company. Small weighing scales all that’s needed , info on dosing Reef to Reef . It’s just powder and ro water mixed in litre bottle. The powder 250 grams cost me £4.50 probably 8$ aus I add 0.43 of a gram to 1 litre . It will last me years, a 1litre triton mng formula about $50 aus each, which I think is just the same product in a fancy carton. Best of luck Pete 👍👍👍
@@ParkersReef it works out miles cheaper especially if you’ve got a huge tank like Robert . Goniopora growers use it Sam from lots of reading and I didn’t used to be able to keep them but haven’t lost one.
I think Rob has actually mentioned in the comments here somewhere. Take a look through and let me know if you can’t find it - if you can’t, I’ll contact rob
Stunning tank. Way more impressive that my first tank which is at about the 14 month mark.... One question - What's your opinion on the need for food safe tanks to store water? I've read competing arguments (I have my RO in a regular Bunnings rain water tank and nothing nasty has ever been picked up in ICP tests)... Wondering what your opinion is...
Food grade is an assurance. Not all non-food grade containers will cause trouble, but some will. The bunnings 100L maze tanks are fine, but the 300L ones have caused issues for people.

Hi Jason. Got them from Melro Water Tanks in Melbourne. They sell direct from Reece Plumbing also. I opted for the opaque colour so I can easily see the water level. Thanks
@@eliasdagher481 hi there. The tanks are 650 ltr each purchased from Melro in Melbourne Can’t recall the price but I know they cost a bit more as I wanted the opaque natural colour so it would be easy to see the water level. They could customise the tank to your specs to put the inlets and outlets exactly where you need them.
Yeah really neat setup. Reminds me of the Reef Builders setup. For those interested: ASC tanks in Melbourne also have some great tanks. 700L for around $300. And iPlast plastics also sell 235L closed head drum that is suitable but not as large as Rob's tanks. But... can't go past the cost and durability of a trusty IBC (if using NSW)
Incredible set up for a first time reefer, is Robs tank about the same dimensions as your dream tank Sam, as it’s huge. It’s a fantastic display for sure. 👍🏴
Thanks Rob. I’ll check it out. The unit is set on an angle to match the plumbing and to make it fit in that sump chamber. I’ve gone through a few rolls now and seems to be tracking straight. But will definitely make adjustments if needed. Thanks
Great tank
Sure is, shaping up a treat
Hell of a first reef tank setup. nice job rob.
absolutely - has the feel of a very experienced reefers setup, not a newbie!

This is hilarious ! I'm also a newbie to the hobby and built a 400gal reef tank as my first attempt. I also kept ciclids as a kid 40 years ago.

Where did up purchase your large water holding containers ? Just what I need for my build

Maze tanks are tried and tested by a lot of Aussie reefers :)
But yeah, avoid the larger 300L ones if you can
Very nice, good job, get rid of the puffer thou not reef safe
Yeah can be a bit risky.
