  • This is a fun, weird, extremely interesting and inspiring episode about lucid dreaming. Andrew Holecek studying and practicing Buddhism and what he calls nocturnal meditations for more than four decades. And he has remarkably simple and down to earth tips for doing this in your own life. He argues anybody can do this. And the proposition is pretty compelling. We’re asleep for a huge percentage of our life. In this episode we talk about:
    • The Five Nocturnal Meditations, which include: liminal dreaming, lucid dreaming, dream yoga, sleep yoga, and bardo yoga
    • Why bother with these nocturnal practices in the first place?
    • How these nocturnal practices might be the next phase of human evolution
    • The problem of wake-centricity
    • Practical tips for trying this stuff yourself
    • And if lucid dreaming is meant for everyone - including those of us with sleep issues
Andrew Holecek is an expert on lucid dreaming and the Tibetan yogas of sleep and dream. He is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the author of scientific papers on lucid dreaming. He has also written many books on the subject, including: Dream Yoga: Illuminating Your Life Through Lucid Dreaming and the Tibetan Yogas of Sleep.

Great podcast.Thank you for inviting Andrew Holecek - an incredible inspiring human being.
I had a lucid dream in the past and I am practicing now to get back into it. Since three months doing 'reality checks' and using other methods, but not successful yet. I am not giving up because I believe there is such a value in lucid dreaming and lucid dreaming meditation. It's important to know though that while anybody can do it, it can take time to start having lucid dreams. The 'Nightclub' Andrew mentioned is a real good space to hang out with other likeminded people and share frustration as much as successes, and also thoughts about other topics that are discussed there.

Fascinating topic. I've had some lucid dreams, would like to have some more, and would love to practice dharma when I'm asleep. Thanks for this great episode!

Loved this interview - I've liminal and lucid dreamed when I was 19 in 1971.
I was part of a class with a teacher and my friend from school (who'd taught me to meditate in the Zen tradition - shikantaza).
    Very memorable, happening time.
I was also a beginning meditator at the time during this period.
I did try flying and was successful...but I woke up in my regular dreams and observed the goings on and made decisions on my actions in dream scenarios as they came up.
I also set my alarm for 4am, did intention setting, state checks.
After a while, I lost interest because I didn't know about developing spiritually.
This gives me some motivation to try for the spiritual aspects.
Also I'm newly retired and could use some ideas for my new life...after retirement.

I’d like to know how to become aware in deep dreamless sleep. I have read this gentleman’s book and I am a frequent lucid dreamer.

Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche has a book about sleep yoga. In the book, he has step-by-step how to practice sleep yoga, which is what you mentioned above.

I've had some wonderful experience with lucid dreaming, being able to meet and communicate with my deceased father and flying into outer space and meeting non physical beings. But my lucid dreams are quite rare and random. I'm doing whatever it takes to get more lucid dreams including hypnosis, Binaural beats and yoga nidra with not much luck. Hopefully it will get better with more effort 😅

Great topic. I wonder if this is related to the phenomenon where I wake up then fall back to sleep to intentionally rejoin the dream I was just having (or the converse, not wanting to fall back asleep to avoid slipping into bad dream)

Yeah, that's related. Read "exploring the world of lucid dreaming" by Stephen laberge. This habit you have is something that only lucid dreamers can do

Rob Nairn said "Insomnia is trying to go to sleep". I think you could just do conscious, connected breathing, and maintain it as long as you can. Include some 5/8 and/or 4/7/8 breathing. No caffeine after 4pm, and no late screen time.
