She was incredible, but she wasn't a jazz singer, she was known for singing Bossa Nova. And no, Bossa Nova is not Brazilian Jazz. Bossa Nova is its own style, it is not a subgenre of Jazz.
@@robemachado Bossa nova, which literally means “new wave,” was a blending of samba and jazz that rose out of a guitar school formed in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana neighborhood in 1956. Bossa Nova was a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music and rhythms, American jazz, and a new style of Portuguese lyrics. It is basically a fusion of Samba and Jazz, so using traditional Brazilian rhythms but with more harmonically complex jazz harmony and more melodic dissonance. Bossa Nova music was created and grew from Brazilian traditional culture. Maybe for the rest you can look for information and read jazz music references about the Bossa Nova genre
Astrud Gilberto sounds like a very down to earth, sincere, and sweet woman. Not at all egotistical or full of herself. Her voice and music was among the best ever. God Bless You & Rest In Peace, Astrud.
Sadly, she has left us. What a remarkable interview this was. I had always wondered why she never became a giant star after getting all the attention she did. Astrud and "her" song will never be forgotten and will be played for generations to come so they can enjoy a bit of music like they've never heard before.
A truly unique voice and music style. Back in the 60's Bossa Nova taught many rocker's to appreciate jazz, including myself. Astrud and Stan Getz performed many beautiful songs. Cordovado was one of my favorites. Smooth and silky.
RIP what a lovely lady and iconic performer and vocalist. I grew up listening to her sing and it brought such magic to the summer. Her music will live on.
She should never have been scared She was awesome and nothing to be scared of. She knew exactly what she was doing on stage.. She was marvelous everytime she went on stage and sang.
But she was scared and did look uncomfortable at times. This is probably why she had success , vulnerability and shyness works on stage ,,,if you can hold it together.
From south of Spain lov song as really so much forever n real eternity n her albums r so beautiful n peacefully clearly miss astrud Gilberto “queen from bossa nova rip
Probably the sweetest voice I have ever heard. She is very sweet and not at all full of herself. Perhaps she has never realized just how great she truly is.
A very down to earth lady with a natural beauty and silky voice!!! One of my favorite artists!!! Thank you Astrud for being part of the soundtrack of my life!!! The shadow of your smile, in your voice, is a song that really touches my heart and soul!!!
here in Boston massachusetts... WGBH radio has a jazz show Friday... saturday and Sunday night....no mention of her passing nor did they play any of her music...😒😡.... shameful...
George Winston also just lost, and NPR did not even bother to do an audio story for him amidst many other items they had time for. I thought, you know I would read an obit you could post for artitsts like these, for free....
She "feels very safe when doing vacuum cleaning." Adorable. I didn't know she had such a funny, self-effacing sense of humor. I could tell she was very nervous on a few of her performances but she still sounded great and pulled it off very well.
For a minute, there, I was thinking how cool it would be to see her play, after the ad for Fat Tuesdays. And then I realized right away that, hey- she's not around! Reality can really take you by storm! RIP Astrud!
2002. She recorded one more album 'Jungle', then stepped away from the limelight and lived reclusively here in Philly the past 20 years. Her music and sweet persona live eternal. RIH
God bless people in different ways . Her voice especially this song is for a lifetime, no matter she is gone , her voice lives on, I wish I could sing like her, she had it natural, first song made her famous, That is from God.
Bossa Nova is not a subgenre of jazz, it is its own style that was influenced by jazz and samba. Rock also had influences from jazz and blues, but is not called a subgenre.
@@robemachado Thank you. I was not trying to diminish it in any way. I love it. I was trying to indicate that it had influences or some DNA from jazz. I am pleased you were able to educate me by being more specific about its origins.
For so long, I’ve been searching for interviews with Astrud, but I never find one. Now after her death, one was finally posted. Unfortunately short. I’ve read somewhere that she stopped giving interviews.
What was most strange to me is to realize that most Brazilian people had kinda disdain for her. May be it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. I don't know... But she was the right person in the right place at the right time to make Bossa Nova reach its worldwide audience. Not bad for a 23 years woman who was in love with Brazilian popular music... R. I. P. Astrud. Your voice managed to sray in my deepest soul
Brazilian people has 62% of ADN from Europe (Portugal is Europe or Asia?), Carmem Miranda was european. Bossa Nova is not ''Brazilian Popular Music'' (MPB in Portuguese), this term is an elitist expression criated after hype on Bossa wave (end of 1960's) to classify a kinda of music of Brazilian urban high middleclass with 'left' tendencies (that in France is named ''Bobo''). Bossa Nova is based on, obviously high levels of syncopation from African músic influence (is the reason of the rythm being named '' *Afro* - Brazilian Jazz''). You see anyone talking of black American people that don't are big fan of jazz as ''disdainers'' of their roots, do you? Same with Brazilian people that is not afficionate of Bossa Nova, because this rythm is a hybrid of African with another rythms like bolero (México), if black Brazilian people or even white Brazilians (or with phenotipical ''European roots') have huge preferences, these are directed to samba, forró, frevo, because of originality on compositions and melodies.
