Lee Iacocca said that he wanted to deliberately phase out the home maintenance auto mechanic. He and other top execs realized that if they made engines difficult to work on with tools that ONLY their factory mechanics were allowed to own they could make more money by guaranteeing that the car's owner HAD to go back to the dealer for repairs. The idea spread to tractors and computers and so on.
These lawsuits are VERY important. Car, Computer, Cell Phone, and Appliance manufacturers are all lining up to claim their products and software are proprietary. And that YOU must only allow one of their certified technicians to repair your device/equipment... because YOU do not actually own the equipment or device. So, YOU do not have the right to repair. Also, YOU must pay a monthly subscription for software updates.
right to repair is more than just for farmers right? it's about, your car, phone, and computer, even more than that, the products you buy are YOURS to work on and modify.
This is why I will NEVER buy a new car with sensors. I BUILT my own truck. I took my 85 GMC 4x4 down to the frame, put a new 350 in it, then stuck my 1932 Chevy cab on it, and made a hardwood flatbed. I've been driving it for 21 years now. It will be the only vehicle I will own until I die. I have no cell[hone. I'm an independent farmer, DIY
Not mentioned is corporate money in politics. Corporations bribe politicians not to pass right to repair bills. And the ones they do pass have loopholes you could drive a tractor through. Every issue we have in this country is blocked by corporate money.
"In the past, America thrived on self-sufficiency. When something broke, we fixed it-a testament to our resilience and resourcefulness. However, today, our ability to repair is hindered by a paywall, and it's time to address this issue. We advocate for the Right to Repair, emphasizing not just the right to repair but also the right to access the knowledge necessary for it. In a landscape where devices are intentionally programmed to fail, and shoddy designs encourage constant replacements, it's crucial to reclaim our independence. We aim to extend the lifespan of our machines, fostering a culture where old things can be kept running at their best. Access to codes and information is paramount. Whether it's our cars, trucks, tractors, planes, drones, or phones, Americans should have the right to fix what's broken. By doing so, we break free from the cycle of forced consumption and contribute to a sustainable, self-reliant society. Let's champion the Right to Repair and uphold our freedom to maintain and preserve, just as a free country should."
This is something that a lot of people would like to do. I complain all the time about having to replace things because they are made of plastic and it just does not last like things used to. Being able to take things to a repair guy like we used to when I was a kid would make more sense than throwing it out and getting a new one. I use my cell phone until it can no longer be upgraded with downloads, and the company makes me get a new one because there is no room.
jfc just HAD to have a dude pretending to be a lady as the spokesman for right-to-repair. way to go, CBS News. Doing the propaganda dirty work for your corporate overlord sponsors.
Only a fool would buy a brand new John Deere tractor today. If my grandfather were alive today, he would shoot me for saying that. John Deere absolutely destroyed a reputation that took many decades to build.
1. Farmers started it, but the Plague of "you'll own nothing and like it" has spread FAR beyond farm equipment. Cell phones, electronic devices of all kinds, and even Car manufactures are ALL looking for and inventing ways to prevent independent repair form happening. Purposefully putting in software roadblocks so that even if you DO replace the hardware part, the Software Sees its different, and doesn't allow that new part to function until you Pay the manufacture to "allow" it to work. Ironically, i dont think the farmers RTR would have gained nearly as much momentum if Apple hadn't stuck their nose in, siding with John Deere to Block it. 2. Dont be fooled with Apple "urging" a right to repair bill. Something Stinks about that, and we are obviously missing something. There is a loophole, some massive catch that we are not seeing that Apple put into the California bill that we have yet to be aware of. Otherwise they would STILL be fighting against it. There is no way having a completely consumer side RTR bill will benefit Apples bottom line. 3. 2:37 This is all corporate lies from JD. None of that crap is true and they have been at the forefront on PREVENTING farmers from repairing their equipment with Software lockouts. They do NOT provide the tools needed (in most cases, the software diagnostics and programs to enable replacement equipment to work). They are lying though their teeth.
Power wheelchair users have the same issues as well, and we are seeking the same type of reform in our neck of the woods too. Good luck to all of us. 🙏🥰🥰🥰🙏
The problem is there are warranties at stake so say you fix the auger on your s780 and it causes a bigger problem now you wabt Deere to cover the bigger problem under warranty why should they?
If it would cost them $4000 to transport their tractor to and from the repair shop and they would be able to perform the repair at the farm themselves that would save the farm $4000 that could then go back into the farm
Can’t we’re talking believe right to repair in a nation that has so called itself a free nation. Reality is any nation or anyone claiming to free isn’t free
It wasn't a real harvesting season if at least a quarter of it was spent trying to fix some break down. Heck, my dad built his own disc and spring tooth.
I mean, i believe it. We're talking about machinery, which hates operating in dirty/dusty environments, operating in dirty/dusty environments. Parts get gunked up, get worn down, get worn out, and many of them running long hours at a time. Thats a lot of wear and tear. And John Deere (and others im sure) want ALL that repair money.
If you are a farmer and your machine breaks in the middle of your operation you realistically an lose your whole crop because of that, i know for a fact it can take up to 3 weeks for you to even get a service call for this companies, 3 freaking weeks in that time the farmer can lose up to a year of work, so this companies don't even want to help the farmers by actually giving them good service neither allow them to service themselves this is not just evil its plain stupid.
Without the ability to repair your own products they end up in our landfills. This law needs to be implemented on passenger cars & cell phones as well.
"Farmers are not people that like to rely on others" Why do they rely on others to build their tractors and planters so? Why do they rely on others to provide their clothes? This guy would be better off moving to the wilderness and living there naked, only using whatever tools he can create with his own hands. He wouldn't have to rely on anyone then.
The word relying here is used in the sense of being 'continuously' dependent on others rather than completely independent. If you go deeper than that it's just a rabbit hole; Can we ever be truly independent? you rely on plants to breath, sun for energy, etc.
I think it would be better to just subsidize companies who agree to use interchangable parts and stuff. Creating a whole new government agriculture equipment company would not work well.
@@writerconsidered I've never heard of any such law, except some Rolls Royce policy but nothing else on earth. Possible. But the market can only withstand a certain price level. Even with stuff lasting longer, farmers will just not buy new equipment anymore if the buy in price is too high.
