Claire, I adore you! You tell it like it is, and that is so important! Many of us are sensitive about our "figure flaws", but measuring is not the time for vanity or embarrassment. You're a breath of fresh air. You are spot on with your instructions. Yes, I have cows - not calves, so measure them I must! The sad truth is this: I weigh 220 pounds, 5 pounds less than on my wedding day in 1982, but I wear a much larger size now. I have gained and lost many pounds over the years, and as weight went up the muscle mass went down. Muscle is denser and heavier than fat and muscle takes up less space. So you can carry more weight in a muscular build and wear a smaller size. It's a battle. At least I have shed most of the old attitudes about how fat folks should dress. Like you I love color and prints. So what if it makes my butt look big - it is and I own it. I dress for comfort and modesty. I am blessed to have a husband who has been loving me from 215 pounds to 350+ (no scale I could use), and all points in between. I am gorgeous to him and have learned to love me as I am right now. Losing weight to be healthier, for me, is more important than to be fashionable. Have a great sewing day❣️
That was the most honest, informative and courageous tutorial on a really hard topic. It is so hard to be honest with ourselves over our body shape and size. Thank you
I would like to echo what others have already said but bares repeating… this is one of the most genuine and authentic, not to mention absolutely 100% useful measuring videos on RUclips right now and I want to thank you SO much for putting it out there. I have watched dozens of videos and read blogs and books on measuring and I believe this is the first time I’ve seen someone mention the need to measure yourself sitting down. Absolutely brilliant!! Keep up the incredible job you are doing! We plus-size sewists appreciate feeling normal for a change! Love your channel!
Claire, thank you for this video. It cannot have been easy to make, and I really applaud the fact that your desire to inform us outweighed your vulnerability. Thank you for being real about it, and for keeping your sense of humor. I don't know any beginning sewists, but I would definitely recommend that they spend time with you before they even start sewing a garment!
What a great video! Thank you very much for stepping out of your comfort zone to share this with us. Your explanations were so clear and plain spoken. I am also a combination of girths and shapes that do not match patterns. This helps me so much!!
As a plus sized woman who's sewn for years but won't make clothes for myself because they never fir, can I just say thank you! I'll be watching the grading videos and full bust adjustment too! I never seem to get it right! I think you're amazing ❤
You are a real gem Claire, so well explained and I love how you just tell it as it is with regards to us ladies fooling ourselves with sizing , I have learnt so much from you and never knew about all those measurements for pants , now it makes more sense , thankyou so much Claire as always !!!
I had never seen anyone taking the seating measurement. That makes so much sense, and explains why pants don’t fit me using all the other measurements. Thank you so much.
I wouldn’t base my measurements off a sitting down measurement but certainly take it into consideration. For example use it to compare with the ease in the pattern and that will help you decide which size to make.
Ah! Thank you for this video. I love seeing a person with a body similar to mine going through all of the measurements and explanations. Using your own measurements as examples was instructive for me personally since we have approx the same measurements. This video is so very helpful to any beginner/advanced beginner. I really appreciate that you took the time to make this and all of your videos.
Hi Claire, this is the most down to earth realistic tutorial I have ever watched. You inspire me to continue to sew when I feel like giving it all up because my clothes don’t fit! I’m going back to the start and trying again now. Thank you so much and keep on inspiring xx
Claire, thank you for showing us how to measure correctly. I know it wasn't easy for you to do this. It will help myself and so many other people. Thank you
Thank you Claire, for putting yourself out there for us - what a thorough, helpful video! You have helped improve the fit of the next garment I sew. P.S. love your plants!
I know you said you hate showing your arms, so I am so thankful for you doing it for us anyway! That natural waist measure tip with the elastic is a lifesaver!!! I always do them too big/small, always! Thank you!!
Yay! Someone whose body looks like mine!! Thanks for being brave and helping us be successful in sewing. I can't tell you how much fabric I have ruined because the finished garment didn't fit.
Hi Claire! Hats down for biting the bullet and putting yourself out there even in the most unflattering angles to show plus sized people how to measure themselves and how to compare those measurements to the pattern they want to sew. It couldn't have been easy, but you did a great job! I have a normal body weight [labeled as medium usually in store-bought clothes] and i can;t imagine how difficult it must have been for you [mentally] to make this video. I'm positive that most ladies and maybe some gents too, would have found this video very helpful and a bit empowering.
Good tip for measuring sitting down for pants/straight skirt. Really good video - thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone for us. I really enjoy your videos - really helpful. 💕
This video saved me! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I find your videos so helpful. I've not always been a bigger woman and had always applied the average measuring techniques plus never had to adapt patterns to much. That's all different after menopause & my body changing dramatically when I gained 60 lbs! You restored my garment making confidence which had fallen down to somewhere at the bottom of the swamp. You're my hero!
Jenny from Cashmerette suggested in a either a vlog or a blog post that taking note of your measurements in a measuring scale that you relate less to can help to detach from this emotional attachment to our size - eg use centimetres if you usually understand your own measurements in inches, or use inches if you usually relate to your own measurements in centimetres. I tried this and it worked for me. I think of my body measurements in inches, so now I measure myself in centimetres when working with a pattern and it definitely helped me to detach and just see these measurements as numbers to match up within a chart of numbers. Loved your video and have saved it for future reference. Thank you Claire.
That can work for some. I use inches too but don’t like cm because the number is higher lol silly how the brain works but these days I honestly don’t give much thought to the numbers they are what they are.
I took a craftsy class years ago that was basically the same information so this was a review. But you covered so much so efficiently! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and yourself. I'm an hour away from anywhere that I could take a class so I learn from RUclips.
Thank you Clare very helpful video. You were very brave and I appreciate it. A visual is always helpful when trying to learn something new. Can't wait for the next video.
Thank you. I bought a whole heap of patterns and most are too small so I need to modify the pattern . I’m so glad I found your channel. I’ve subscribed 👍
oh God claire you are priceless and very brave but this information was amazing and funny i have been watching sewing videos for a few years and never heard the bit about sitting down and doing measurements because of fat distribution lol that is why we so desperately need you .thank you so much
Thanks for taking the scariness out of measuring Claire. Another very informative video Thank you. I have big arms so always have to take this into account.
I've just measured myself using your guidelines and now realise why garments don't fit properly!! Thank you so much it has been a revelation for a relative newbie to garment making. I'm off to watch your other vlogs now x
Hi Claire! This was a fabulous video! Really helpful! I think you are doing such a wonderful job, and this was one that I listened to twice! Thank you! As a plus person, there are so many things that needs to be taken into consideration that a standard sized person does not have to deal with. What an affirmative video! Wonderful! Wonderful!
Thank you for doing this Claire. It is very hard to put yourself out there like this and I commend you for your willingness to do it for us. Every video you do I learn something new. Love you!
That was fantastic, thank you so much.I've put on a lot of weight and have been really confused about pattern sizes.I've bought sewing patterns that go up to my size,22 but then the measurements don't fit me.It's really upsetting and makes you feel much larger ,so thank you,so much, for addressing this in such a sensitive way.
That was so very informative, all the things I know in this area I have learned from you. You always explain everything so clearly that there is no confusion. Thank you for this type of video and I can't wait for the next in the series.
Claire thank you for all this information. Very true about shop sizings. You are very brave to measure on line and I admire you for this, but this has been so helpful to actually see and the first time of seeing this actually on film being done. Thank you! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You’re wonderful in every way Claire! Just wanted to mention that when you’re measuring your pattern, remember to deduct the width of the seam allowance because that half an inch on each seam of one bodice or trouser leg pattern piece will turn into minus 2 inches around the whole garment, and that’s if you’ve only got 4 pattern pieces involved!
Great video Claire. Measuring and comparing your measurements is key to successful garment construction, minus seam allowance. The fuller the bust the more ease you will need around this area to move without restriction. Well done great job.
This is an excellent video on measuring. I have always made garments for my friends and family and getting them to understand the difference between pattern sizing and ready to wear is so difficult.
Claire, thank you, thank you, thank you so very much for a lovely and thorough explanation of measurements and coordinating with a pattern! Very good! Thank you once again!!! I’m looking forward to sewing better fitting garments without too much frustrations!!!!
This is fantastic... so clear n precise in the information you presented... you are so sweet to use your body to let us see exactly what needed to be done.... you are beautiful just the way you are n you give us all the confendence to face our shapes n honestly compare to the pattern of our choice... looking forward to the next installment of your series... blessings...
Hi Claire, this video was so helpful. I had no idea how important all these measurements are. If I am going to put in a lot of time and effort, including purchasing the fabric and pattern, I agree with you, I would so much prefer a garment that fits well, no matter what size it is.
Excellent job on explaining how to measure. Everyone should do the full list of measurements regardless of size. My best friend and I have the same measurements if you just go by the bust, waist, and hips but we're built completely differently and not the same height. I'm very short waisted and have a narrow back and always have to adjust those.
Thank you so very much for sharing your expertise so easy to follow and understand, I certainly hate hate hate measuring myself perhaps just like to bury my head in the sand! but you make it appear ok and I am sure that by using your advise my next sewing project will fit much better. I thought you were speaking to me at the beginning about making what you think and it end up being too small! thank you Claire will follow you without fail
This is such a great video, so helpful and I'm definitely going to look at all these points for my next make, rather than picking my size and holding my breath that it will fit me. Thank you so much ☺
This was interesting. You explained well why I really don't like patterns. I remember decades ago my "home economics" class. Final garment was a project of our choosing. I made linen pants with pleats in the front. The plan was to wear them for graduation. They came out so wrong - even with the teacher checking each step of our measurements and progress. I still wanted to continue to sew after that disappointment. But all my successes have been with diy patterns with my measurements. Seeing how things are constructed makes me feel more confident that I can do commercial patterns, eventually. Not quite there yet and not as frustrated now that I have had a few successes making something wearable. Being persistent will give us more successful results. Also having different perspectives and goals as we are learning helps those of us with self-esteem and body image obstacles. Most aren't experts on day one.
Interesting to hear! At some point, once this series is done, I want to teach to create your own blocks as personally I feel sewing patterns are quite limiting.
Thankyou loads Claire for putting yourself out there for us lot. I truly appreciate this and I’m sure my next project will fit loads better, also I would never have thought about measuring myself sat down, this makes so much sense and shows me where I went wrong on my last trousers. I was going to stop trying to make them but I’ll definitely try again now. Much love xx
Hi Clare, thank you for showing how to measure ourselves properly, I've gained weight, I've gone from an xs to a L ,and yes I'm struggling with clothes I look pregnant. And I'm hoping making my own clothes will give me some that will fit. 💖
Thks Claire this was very interesting as all though I hardly ever use commercial pattern as I draft my own patterns it's good to know how to use these patterns
What a fantastic video!!❤ 😊 I struggle with finding my correct size. Especially in big 4 patterns! Great tips thank you! Btw I'm about your measurements. Definitely looking forward to the next video!
Hi Claire. I'm new to your channel, having heard about you from Karina at Lifting Pins and Needles. Love her channel and looking forward to enjoying your videos as well. This one is great, very informative. Love your honest presentation.
Great tips 😁 just taken all of these but haven't done anything practical with them yet 😄. I think I need to do your sitting down method to see the difference. Also I'm in a wheelchair outside and didn't take that into consideration. I thought I would make a sloper until you said to measure every time, you saved me from that! Thank you. Can't see anyone adding my JJ cup size 😂 I'm definitely going to have to grade. Yes I've come across vanity sizes and bought extra because I felt good 🤦. I don't care about the size now, just the fit. I'm really bad at sewing darts 😭 hoping you will do a video for that.Thank you so much for these invaluable tips. Have a great weekend 💖
A sloped can be helpful if you don’t fluctuate too much but most people don’t have a sloper so in that case I recommend taking measurements each time. I will have a video about darts at some point. Thank you you too.
Ah I put a lot of weight on since first lockdown but now I'm on limited diet because of gallstones so expecting to lose some. I'll stick to the measurement taking for now. I'm pleased you will do one about darts! I know how to move them but can't crack sewing them x
This is so helpfull and I learn so much from you. Thank you very much! So I could also change the pattern, to take a larger size bust and a smaller size hip and draw a line from the large in the pattern to the medium size pattern? I would like to try that some time.
Thank you for showing us the proper way to take our measurements. My problem is my chest is a good 3 sizes smaller than the rest of my body. The one part of my body that will not show my weight gain figures. 🤦🏻♀️
Claire, I adore you! You tell it like it is, and that is so important! Many of us are sensitive about our "figure flaws", but measuring is not the time for vanity or embarrassment. Excellent, so flag I found you! Getting back to sewing at 70 years old, plus many more pounds. 👍♥️

@@Penguinandpear I understand what you’re saying. This is a measurement that should be part of the whole process of determining size and fit.
Ah! Thank you for this video. I love seeing a person with a body similar to mine going through all of the measurements and explanations. Wonderful, making beautiful clothes for real women, celebrating our own body shapes and sizes thank you x

Claire, thank you for showing us how to measure correctly. I know it wasn't easy for you to do this. It will help myself and so many other people. Thank you
You do a very good job of explaining how to choose the right pattern size, it’s truly appreciated!
Thank you. This is great for me. I'm shaped just like you and never get patterns to fit. Love this.
Thank you Claire, for putting yourself out there for us - what a thorough, helpful video! You have helped improve the fit of the next garment I sew.

Thank you Claire for such a transparent fitting video. This was extremely helpful to me , since my body is very similar to yours.
You have a real gift for teaching.
You, rock, Claire. Awesome job!!! Thank you.
The measurements sitting down are super helpful. Thanks. Now i get why most of my clothes dont fit right lol
Also have a good bra on that you regularly wear as opposed to a sports bra when you measure. Helpful information. Thx Claire! 😊
I would just say measure yourself in whatever bra you will be wearing with the garment you’re making. Glad you found it useful!
think this is one of the most helpful videos ive ever seen! thankyou very much.
Claire thank you for all this information. Very true about shop sizings. You are very brave to measure on line and I admire you for this, but this has been so helpful to actually see and the first time of seeing this actually on film being done. Thank you! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for taking time to show and explain this to us. Love your clear and real manner. You've just gained a subscriber - thank you!
Thank you. I did mention to add seam allowance when I was talking / showing the patterns.
Thank you Claire for this .
Great video. Will make this as favorite to return to when sewing for me. Very informative. Thank you for sharing!
Great video Claire. Measuring and comparing your measurements is key to successful garment construction, minus seam allowance. The fuller the bust the more ease you will need around this area to move without restriction. Well done great job.
A wonderful educational video!! I learned so much!! Looking forward to the next one!!!
This is an excellent video on measuring. I have always made garments for my friends and family and getting them to understand the difference between pattern sizing and ready to wear is so difficult.
What a great video. Thank you so much. I’ll be referencing this again. Hugs from Canada.
Great information for beginners and intermediate sewers. Thank you 😊.
Clarke, thank you for this video. I’ve saved it for future viewing and use.
Hi Claire, this video was so helpful. I had no idea how important all these measurements are. If I am going to put in a lot of time and effort, including purchasing the fabric and pattern, I agree with you, I would so much prefer a garment that fits well, no matter what size it is.
I’m glad you found it useful!
Interesting!

That is very informative, I learned a ton. Thanks
Excellent tutorial. Very helpful. Thank you!
Brilliant demo on measuring !!
Claire thanks so much for sharing your measuring process it’s very helpful. I look forward to your next video.
Brilliant video Claire. Thank you xxx
This is really useful information. Thank you Claire
What a fantastic video!!❤ 😊 I struggle with finding my correct size. Especially in big 4 patterns!
Great tips thank you! Btw I'm about your measurements. Definitely looking forward to the next video!
Very very helpful. I’m actually taking my measurements for pants right now and you showed me couple tips I forgot about.
Thanks Claire - great video
Thank you for this video! I learned a lot!
GREAT information... THANKS for sharing
This is really helpful. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you Claire.
Thank you for this video. ❤
This is fabulous 👌
Hi Claire. I'm new to your channel, having heard about you from Karina at Lifting Pins and Needles. Love her channel and looking forward to enjoying your videos as well. This one is great, very informative. Love your honest presentation.
Welcome!
Very helpful!
Very helpful.
Very helpful - thanks Claire 😀❤️
Very useful video!!
excellent thank you
Good job!
I would like to try that some time.
you are awesome!
Thank you for showing us the proper way to take our measurements.
My problem is my chest is a good 3 sizes smaller than the rest of my body. The one part of my body that will not show my weight gain figures. 🤦🏻♀️
