  • If you’ve been wondering what the Zachman framework is all about and how it works, then you’ve come to the right place. The Zachman Enterprise Framework provides a useful way of modeling the enterprise (or even a department or division) within an organization. Even though John Zachman from IBM first introduced the framework concept in 1987 and later created the first version of the enterprise framework in 1992, it is still in wide use today. In this lesson I briefly describe how the Zachman framework is structured and what the various models mean and what is typically included in each.

    Thank you so much for this compact information about Zachman. Helped me a lot understanding the purpose of it.

    So happy to see another installment in the series!😊
    Mark, thank you for choosing this particular topic. Zachman Framework is often considered obsolete to a point when it's not acceptable to bring it up in the conversations (at least in my environment), so it's very refreshing to see a new video on it.

      I'm glad you see the usefulness of this framework as well! Just because the first version was developed a little over 30 years ago doesn't mean it's still not relevant. My favorite model hands-down is the WHY model, and I insert that one into TOGAF all the time.

    Interesting! Even though I'm actually not that interested in Enterprise Architecture, I feel this model should always be available for middle-big projects to give every stakeholder an idea of what's going on, what's the purpose of the system, and so on.
    Another nice thing to learn!

    Honest question, how many times you have this successfully implemented to model the "Enterprise", which is a complex system that by its own nature can't be fully modelled?
    Also, Zachman himself calls it an "Ontology" not a framework or taxonomy.
    I've did EA implementations for last 7 years, yet to find a single place where this model was implemented with any degree of measurable success. Most time I found a repository of hundreds of diagrams connected to individual cells, all outdated and loosely connected to a point that you can't understand how it got there in the first place.

      Rarely; I've had issues with synchronization of models, consistency, and out of date models. One thing I have done which helps is to assign ownership of the models, but I've also had challenges with this as well. That said, I've had great success with implementing the "WHY" model, particularly with representing it through ADRs and within TOGAF as an add-on.

    Oh sir, u made it easy to for me to understand, i was unable to get the concept of this framework from any other video on youtube, thanks a lot for saving my time.

      Glad it helped! Stay tuned for "TOGAF in 10 minutes" sometime in late October 2023.

    Nice idea. Not seen a lot of these implemented in practice but very much needed. Hopefully GPT can help document at least some of these models

    This is nice!!!
    could you pleaes make video on different architecture models such as pipes and filters,hexagonal, etc. I mean there is some confusion on the where to go for which one and what is relevant in today's world.

    Thanks for another great video Mark! Do you have any preferences regarding tools for creating these models: Visual Paradigm, Sparx etc?

    • @markrichards5014
      @markrichards5014  Год назад +1

      It depends completely on the model actually. For some a simple spreadsheet works (like the lists and inventory), where as others I use Omnigraffle or Visio.

    1992 is not accurate. The Zachman Framework was first introduced in his paper titled “A Framework for Information Systems Architecture.” This paper was published in a 1987 article in the IBM Systems Journal.

    • @markrichards5014
      @markrichards5014  8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, you are correct. While first introduced in 1987, it became widely adopted as an enterprise architecture framework in 1992. Thank you for that correction - I will update that in the description.

    6:35 "Where do certain things happen" is not a very helpful explanation.

    • @markrichards5014
      @markrichards5014  7 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry, I guess that was a little vague. What I meant to say was "in what physical location do certain business processes happen? At a cash register at a store? Overseas? in a call center? etc. Hope that clarifies it.
