Boogaloo!!! New York's Latin Soul from the 60's

- In 1963 Mongo Santamaria performed in Latin format the blues-jazz "Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock becoming a bestseller in the North American music market. The same year Ray Barretto's "El Watusi" appears, a charanga with elements of Rhythm & Blues which became his first big commercial success and reached the top 20 of the North American billboard. These two songs inspired a new musical trend, the Boogaloo, a mixture of Afro-Caribbean rhythms with elements of Rock, Blues and Soul. The new rhythm was catchy, easy to dance to, which is why many Latin bands in New York performed this rhythm with the hope of seducing the American public, but the prejudices of the time made the good intentions fall into empty pockets. Very gringo for the Latino and very Latino for the gringo the musical novelty would be of short duration. By 1969 the fashion dissipated and bands began to rediscover their musical roots while creating what would later be called salsa. Today the Boogaloo is a musical example of integration and tolerance between cultures.
En 1963 Mongo Santamaría interpreta en formato latino el blues-jazz "Watermelon Man" de Herbie Hancock convirtiéndose en un éxito de ventas en el mercado musical norteamericano. El mismo año aparece "El Watusi" de Ray Barretto, una charanga con elementos del Rhythm & Blues la cual se convirtió en su primer gran éxito comercial y que llegó a los top 20 del billboard norteamericano. Estos dos temas inspiraron una nueva tendencia musical, el Boogaloo, una mezcla de ritmos afrocaribeños con elementos del Rock, Blues y Soul. El nuevo ritmo era pegajoso, fácil de bailar por lo cual muchas bandas latinas de Nueva York interpretaron este ritmo con la esperanza de seducir al público americano pero los prejuicios de la época hicieron que las buenas intenciones cayeran en sacos vacíos. Muy gringo para el latino y muy latino para el gringo la novedad musical sería de corta duración. Ya en el 1969 la moda se disipó y las bandas empezaron a redescubrir sus raíces musicales mientras creaban lo que luego se denominaría como salsa. Hoy en día el Boogaloo es un ejemplo musical de integración y tolerancia entre culturas.
Esta música la disfruté en mi temprana juventud en la discoteca La Montaña del Oso en esos matinées bailables con ron y coca cola. Tarde mucho tiempo en localizar los discos porque allí sonaban a 45 rpm (pachanga, charanga y boogaloo). Definitely, remember is live

Creo que hay un artista y compositor que sin haber nacido en Nueva York o Puerto Rico, interpretó y creó música de gran factura entre 1966 y 1972 y es de Venezuela; estoy hablando del extraordinario pianista, compositor, arreglista y gran director de orquesta Nelson González Rojas quien con su orquesta interpretó pachanga, charanga, boogaloo, son montuno, guaguancó, danzón, bomba, cumbia, con éxitos como, Tema del Papelon, Juancho Jose, Kikiriki, Swing Pachanga, Descarga Boogaloo, Cumbia del Monte, Changaral, A las Doce, Alegres cueros, El Rey del Aji, Aprieta el Tumbao, El Ritmo de Alla, El Primer Caballo, Bailaderos y muchos, muchisimos temas mas. A este artista que aún vive se le debe hacer un inmenso reconocimiento pues adapto y transformó la música de la gran manzana introduciendo esos ritmos en toda Suramérica. Admiro su obra musical de esos primeros años que no fue tan conocida en mi país, pero qué calidad.

I was 15 totally ignorant of the inner sense of music when I heard “ I like it like that”. As I got older mastering percussion on my own, I realized how. in primitive Puerto Rico, fortunate I was. At 71 of age I still dig the swing of these blend of latin and soul.

NY Puerto Ricans learning cuban tumbao y son .Boogaloo was a result of a marriage of many styles including Cuban son montuno, guaguancó, guajira, guaracha, mambo, and American R&B and soul. Styles like doo wop also left a sizable influence. It was Cuban Mongo Santamaría's cover version of the Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" that started the mocment !

Wow this is great. I wish I was a part of this era all around NJ and NY dancing clubbing doing that Boogaloo. Love this music..why? Dont know! Maybe reincarnated, an old soul...maybe good ear for good music! Wish there were videos of the late 60s watching Hispanic kids doo these Boogaloo shingaling dance moves. My cousins who were teenagers in those days had some of these Boogaloo classics and motown. My mom remembers hearing on the radio the boat rides with Boogaloo bands. I was born in 69 and I feel and love the 60s music. THE BEST!!!

Awesome stuff. Hey, do you know of a song probably from the 60's where in the chorus they chant, "Senorita, picante" or "Senorita, picana"? I caught it on the radio a couple yrs back. It was a great song and sounded a little more tuff or gritty even.

No, paisano ningún cuento chino la SALSA si es creación de Nueva York, para entender el concepto hay que salirse del mero ritmo base que sin duda alguna salió de los ritmos de cuba. Pero pasa que en Nueva York se cocinó todo un movimiento, género y cultura de la mano de los Puertorriqueños, cubanos, dominicanos, panameños colombianos y también músicos norteamericanos. Y fue gracias a ese crisol de culturas que esa música de propagó por Latinoamérica Europa África y hasta el Japón.
