Correction -- 45 million people, not 70 million. That number is going to bite me later I fucking swear. I know -- 3 months, I can't believe it either. Once again, I'd like to thank History House Productions for collabing for this video. The link to his channel is below: ruclips.net/channel/UCXXYxQoIpkMVFAUn9PBvUWQ
Citizen, it has come to the Party's attention that you are spreading Capitalist Fake News. Please cease immediately and then allow our friendly police to escort you to a nice and pleasant Re-Eductation Camp where you will be treated humanely and not die and be removed from all records. These events NEVER happened, and NOTHING happened in Tianenmen Square. DO NOT RESIST ALL GLORY TO CHAIRMAN POOH BEAR.
If you want to start a war on birds, you need a larger force than a handful of dudes with a couple of machine guns. Mao could order everybody to harass the birds. I imagine the Emu war would have gone different if every Australian was tasked with killing the damn things. That said, emus are harder to kill than sparrows, and China is more densely populated than Australia.
CORRECTIONS/NOTES: [1] I don't have a record of Mao himself saying this, but there is a memoir (listed under [1] in my sources) that reports a party member saying this, so there was definitely still this type of mindset amongst party members at the time [2] Not mentioned, but some sources claimed China had ordered some sparrows from the USSR to repopulate the country. Couldn't make this fit anywhere, but it's neat to read regardless. [3] Academics generally seem to not think the famine death toll numbered ~70m, they’re usually more around ~40m-50m. The number I used was from a journalist who counted birth defect related deaths, which I had put in my notes before writing the script and used as the “highest possible value,” which was a blatantly bad idea in retrospect.
I just came from hhp and honestly I don’t see you as a replacement as I first wanted to but you are wonderful and you do fill a hole in my heart left by hhp
For someone from the city, the idea that sparrows might be a pest is alien. But for the Egyptians, for example, the sparrow was used as determinative for words like "bad", "evil", "poor" So, the hate towards these birds is not something new haha
Can't believe we have almost the same number of subscribers, you actually make quality content! I just subscribed, I look forward to see more from you.
I have 2 problems with this video: 1. The estimate of deaths according to western scholars is usually between 45 to 55 million, I don't know where 70 million comes from. 2. While the reduced number of sparrows is certainly a factor in causing the famine, it's misleading to suggest that it's the main factor. The People's Commune which reduced incentive for farmers is a much more influential.
Hey, sorry there, it took a while for your comment to appear for me. I was mostly interested in reading about the sparrow campaign, so I wasn’t as cautious as I should have been when it came to details about the events leading up to and following the Great Leap Forward. I looked back at my notes and saw, when I looked at my figures, one article written by a journalist names Yang Jisheng estimated 76 million deaths - 36 million from the famine, and an additional 40 million from deaths of infants or complications during birth. When I began to write the script, I had taken the highest figure I had written and used that as the “range” of estimated deaths, which was clearly a bad idea on my end that I should have corrected, I apologize. Secondly, I hadn’t intended to make it seem like only the Sparrow Campaign caused the famine, I wanted to keep the focus of the video narrow in scope, but my wording could cause some confusion, so I’ll keep that in mind from this point on. Thank you, I’m sorry for the inaccuracies.
If I had a nickel for every time a country went to war with birds with the birds winning, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

What about the dust bowl in the USA? What about the food chemical ingredients we are legally consuming. What about the chemicals in water we drink? China is ascending in leaps and bounds, the USA is drowning in debt... Before criticizing what happened in China decades ago, look at what is happening to the USA now! To criticize the past is a desperate way to artificially elevate the USA and demote China. He who laughs last laughs the most.

Yes
Yea…. I will miss him so much
Damm man, feels.
Yeah, I feel like that there will be a significant fall in my history video watch time, similarly to the sparrows.
It's bitter sweet seeing HH one last time. One last bark from an old faithful dog. But there's a new puppy in town, let's see what happends
Declaring war on birds suddenly makes a lot of sense when you realize that "mao" means cat in Mandarin.

Cursed. Accurate but… cursed.
Well, its gonna get really tough to get cockroaches extinct. I mean, havent we tried that for basically all of history?

extirpate - v. to destroy/eliminate completely
“The first rate experienced mate to exterminate is a fate known as “extirpate.”
