My heart feels for you and your family and your whole area. Living my whole life in south FL we've been thru what you now face and wish everyone a speedy recovery. In an area like yours that rarely sees storms like this the trees are not ready for the wet ground and high winds so you will expect much tree damage and road blockage. Your power distribution system will take some time to be repaired so simple things like getting gas beccomes challenging until the gas stations have power restored so conserve as much fuel as you can. Be careful as many injuries happen after the storm has passed from people attempting to make repairs. You all have my prayers and wishes for a prompt return to some sense of normalcy, Treat all downed power lines as hot until verified as safe, some will be energized and are extremely dangerous. God bless. Ray

Isabel did similar damage to southeast VA in 2003. It takes time, but you'll recover. It's much worse as far as the flooding damage and the hospital in TN closing. But that's due to poor planning by those who approved locating it in a potential flood zone. The roads that were washed out like I-40 have had engineering problems for years, so it really shouldn't be too much of a surprise that they're closed. We had engineering improvements after our experience. Hopefully, NC and TN will learn a lot from this. Glad you're okay and able to help your family which is the most important thing you can do. I have family in Landrum and Pelion. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of folks are discovering holes in thier prepps; even the pepper-preppers. Sounds like you folks are going to be working on your underground shelter and getting your breaker box figured out. Consider a little annotated diagram that explains how your box works and then a checklist type set of directions; laminate this then hang on the outside of your box. Talk to those in the know 'cause there are ways (and stuff to buy) which enable hook-up from a generator to a breaker box which also helps prevent back feed.

Getting people, supplies and equipment in place is time consuming. The poor people that had their entire community washed away is so heartbreaking, about puts a guy in tears. Thankfully everyone you know is safe and breathing. We were without power for 6 days during an ice storm without a generator, just about froze, 3 layers of clothes and covered in a blanket listening to a battery powered radio. Invested in a generator cause we are not gonna suffer through that again. Stock up on beer is a must in times like this.

24:00. You need to get a proper electrician out there to fix your generator hookup and bring it up to Code. Your setup is way too prone to mistakes (as seen by the cluster you went through) and you can easily backfeed to the utility and injure or kill a lineworker. Main breakers need an interlock kit to the generator breaker, and it all needs to be clearly labeled. Stay safe and watch for all hazards whike cleaning up.

I feel for you having to listen to the generator. It was 5 weeks we were on one after Andrew. Both at home and at work. It may not seem like much but a local power company ( Center Point Energy ) is sending 250 people with trucks and equipment to NC to help out Dominion Energy. While the local companies still are repairing lines here in Florida. Florida has 25,000 customers without power while NC has over 300,000 customers without power. SC has nearly 400,000 customers without power. Once FPL gets all of its customers back on line, then those crews will likely go North to help out in GA, SC, NC, or VA. One thing the Southern States do have is a mutual aid pact. So State workers will also be joining in with the locals as requested by the other States. NC is going to need a lot of help in the Western part as will Eastern Tennessee.

These storms are getting worse every year! That is why we left south Florida a little over a year ago. The biggest problem that we saw was getting home insurance. Companies are fleeing south Florida and the ones that remain are ripping home owners and taking years to pay, if there is a claim! We could not find an insurance company that would insure our home for replacement value and would only insure for the balance on the note, and was $5000.00 per year! We now live in Tennessee and pay $1000.00 per year.

The two weeks without power we had was awful b/c there was no-wind & people began burning. In my State outdoor burning requires 6-23 MPH winds, & I live in a non-attainment county so to comply with SIP Rules FEMA offered Storm Debris Pickup... but my fire Marshall was telling people to burn on their voicemail, getting them written up takes too long.

When things settle down, get an electrician to properly test and label all your breakers so you know what is what.

Looks like you were using Blue PVC glue. You have to give it a few hours to set before turning the water back on...

Write you a power up list from the generator. So that that anyone can hook up the generator power. Put the list in the electrical panel or on the doors of the panels. Number each step so that there is no guessing.
