    2000 is a bit fine for surface prep. It can work if the surface is near perfect but to get rid of imperfections I'll use 600 grit between coats. If there's any orange peel, dust, overspray (common) or sagging at the final stage and you want a really great smooth finish I'll work in stages with 600, 1000, 1500 and finally 2000 then move on to buffing with polishing compound, then wax. Be sure to avoid the edges.

    How much paint is needed to paint a fairing like this?

  • @cliffstark1810
    @cliffstark1810 3 года назад +2

    so where you were touching the primer did the paint lift?

    It looks really good. You have inspired me to do the same thing, probably with more sanding, cussing, and a bit of repainting, hehe.

    I actually thought it was going to look bad ..honestly it looks really good...the pin stripes was a perfect touch.

    I'd be curious also how much paint this requires.
    I'd like to do mine, but masked off inside and just do the outside. My bike is a tri-color, so needs both a base and top coat. ColorRite on the phone says it's hard to estimate how much I'll need and is suggesting I purchase 2 cans of base and 2 cans of top coat. To me, that seems like an awful lot - and it's not cheap paint.
    Edit: Adding additional question. Why did you use spray cans to do the primer when you have the spray gun/compressor setup that you used for the color?

      @@zacksrandomprojects9698 LOL. This was 2 bikes ago. I haven't seen the bike I painted the fairing on in years. FWIW: I was severely disappointed in how mine came out, but I attribute that entirely to me not knowing what the heck I was doing.

    Says 2015 so it's been plenty long enough. How long did your paint last? I had them color match mine and it didn't last 2 years.

    Paint will probably flake off in a year or so. 2000 is way to fine for prep work. Should prep with 400 or 600 grit paper. You want a good mechanical bond to hold the primer to the piece and also to hold the paint to the primer. Dont prep with 2000.

    Hope you didn't got sprayovers all over your garage / workshop , to me it seams kind of risky or stupid not to cover your stuff with som plastic bud I like the end result. nice job.
