The singer Robert Calvert was a great lyricist. This is about a film called 'Reefer Madness' in America in the 30's warning the youth not to touch the herb. Reefer is such an old timey word but there's a great UK garage track from the early 90's called 'Do you smoke Paul?' or something like that where it talks about the reefer. The second half of this song is like 80's dance music, especially stuff like Lil' Louis 'French Kiss', acid house stuff, which was psychedelic. The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon from the same album is even more of a dance track , almost hip hop IMO.
oh Mr Mug. the Hawkwind were our band. We were the filthy hippies of the 70s/80s in manky broken Britain. They went everywhere we went. Physically, psychically, and psychologically. Hard strong acid when that was exactly what we needed.
Hawkwind were an awesome band right from 1970 well into the 80's..... they were space rock, punk before punk and proto stoner rock before stoner rock.... and techno before techno....
I went to a new school in '79 and met Jeff Perkins, who ONLY listened to music either by Hawkwind or by people who'd been in Hawkwind. Most of my favourite tracks have Calvert vocals and lyrics.
I have a feeling that you'll enjoy your journey travelling through Hawkwind's vast discography (35 studio albums + 2 forthcoming and solo/live) and sonic soundscapes. "Punk Rock started because in every small town there was somebody who liked Hawkwind" - Stephen Morris, Joy Divison/New Order
The quality of the lyrics on two of the songs on this much underestimated albums was Astounding. Steppenwolf and Reefer Madness refer to great works of art. The much maligned Robert Calvert was a poet and a word Smith. This was the end of the great era of Hawkwind.
I like your take on music, relaxed and impulsive. For some real trippy stuff, both sonically and lyrically, Hawkwind have lots of material. You could try Steppenwolf off of this album for a Halloween vibe.
Hawkwind the kind of band that your mother wouldn't like. The band that kicked Lemmy out for doing (the wrong) drugs. I have not heard this one before. Hawkwind are a source of great music to unwind to. Many pieces have a driving hypnotic beat. Wonderful stuff.
Saw the band on the tour after this and they are/were unique even within the arena they existed. The propaganda movie of the same name used as inspiration. Calvert and Brock worked some amazing magic. The freeform talking poetry recitation added to the whole vibe, They started as a band wanting to scare the tripping fans to making tripping music for the masses. The 70s were such a different time
This album was a change in direction for Hawkwind. Rob Calverts writing encapsulating the movie Reefer Madness and imo his even more creative penning of Steppenwolf were majestic and poetic. Astounding soundsis the first album by Hawkwind that I shelled out my hard earned pennies on and it's still on my playlist. Once you've suggested this fine album you should head out into space with Quark Strangeness and Charm...another Hawkwind gem from the 70s in my vinyl collection. 1976 was the dawn of punk rock over here
My best friend arranged a birthday surprise for me for my 16th birthday.... He got his Dad to drive us around on a mystery tour... and we ended up outside the Bournmouth Winter Gardens with the venue emblazoned with APPEARING LIVE TONIGHT... HAWKWIND PLUS SUPPORT ! We are still the best of friends in our sixties now... This was the Astounding tour with Bob Calvert fronting... and the Atomhenge stage show. Best night of my young life.
Hawkwind and their fans never left the psychedelic era! It's nice to see younger people discovering them, they won't be around much longer as the surviving members are on their last legs.
Hawkwind are classified as Space Rock Because their music had science fiction or fantasy themes but also because they were spaced out on stage and so was most of the audience. This song is taking the piss (Uk slang for making fun off) The 1936 film Reefer Madness which was the film was intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of cannabis use the film was "rediscovered" in the early 1970s and gained new life as an unintentional satire among advocates of cannabis policy reform. If you want to listen to more from Hawkwind I would also suggest Master of the Universe not to be confused with the film. ruclips.net/video/X3W7ch0oLeA/видео.html
If you think the lyrics on this are good listen to "Spirit of the age" from their album "Quark, strangeness and charm". Some of the greatest lyrics ever written.
I have heard of this band! I think there's a story they they played a show somewhere and locked the doors and spiked everyone's drinks with LSD forcing them to listen to their trippy ass music high as balls! dunno if it's true or not :P Great video as always my man, check out the band RIVERSIDE!! (the song Driven To Destruction)
It's about the government propaganda movie made in the fifties, {REEFER MADNESS) this can be found on youtube, also if you have not heard the song Hassan i Sabbha by hawkwind ,about the hashishin this is a groovy tune

Love Hawkwind.....have since my early 'stoner' days. They were the pioneers of 'space rock'. The lyrics of this were reflective of what the christian conservative idiots in authority back in the pre-50's were saying about dope....fearful that it was corrupting the youth of the day. They didn't want people with open minds that's for sure. "Get in line people....."

Hypnotic space rock, you cannot beat it.

Actually Hawkwind has been around for 54 years, still going!!!
Acid days 😍
Hawkwind and their fans never left the psychedelic era! It's nice to see younger people discovering them, they won't be around much longer as the surviving members are on their last legs.
I doubt the mighty Hawkwind and Billy Joel have ever been likened to each other 😂
Hawkwind: Simply add Acid and shake well. 😄

The best two Hawkwind albums are this one and Quark, Strangeness and Charm.
Hawkwind has a long history of using literary and historical pop culture references to make something exciting and new. --Dan

The lyrics are satirical.
BRIDGET WISHART sang the best version of this on CALIFORNIA BRAINSTORM....
God no
Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead played in Hawkwind from 1971-1975
The song is about the various anti drug campaigns from America in the 50's.
