- Is the cheapest 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD any good? In this video we will be using the Leven M.2 NVMe drive with an external enclosure storage to see how the inexpensive 2 TB drive performs. The drive is the Leven JPS600 2 TB M.2 NVMe SSD, and we pair it with a Qwiizlab Rugged NVMe M.2 enclosure (model ES10UR) to create external storage for a Mac or Win PC. We also look at the complete line of Leven SSD hard drives (both M.2 and 2.5" SSDS) and cover just how much these SSDs sell for. If you are looking for some very inexpensive NVMe storage than watch this video to see how we build a 2TB SSD enclosure that is better than you can buy in the stores.
Here are the products we use in the video:
Leven JPS600 2TB NVMe (main drive) - amzn.to/40SXChr
Qwiizlab Rugged Enclosure - amzn.to/3U1up1u
Other drives by Leven:

Those may be inexpensive drives but speed wise they sure put my old 2.5" SSDs to shame. And I kinda like that Qwiizlab enclosure.
Yes they are all fast now. That enclosure feels like a tank can roll over it so for sure rugged.
Thanks for another extremely good overview.....
Thanks Eduardo. Pricing is come down for sure on nvme storage.
I’m gonna order me one. Thanks for sharing that enclosure. 🔥🔥💯💯💯
Thanks and good luck with everything
How much is performance influenced by the enclosure? In this case is the enclosure hampering the NVME performance or is it the other way around? I've been following you since I bought a refurbished Mac mini 2012, 16Gb ram and 512Gb SSD, and I thank you for all the tips you leave here!
Any 10 Gbps enclosure is only capable of 1,250 MB/s on paper. You divide 10 Gbps my 8 (bit and bytes) and get the 1,250 MB/s capability. But there is overhead on all these devices using cables and electronics so any 10 Gbps enclosure usually gets about 700 to 900 MB/s and that is considers a pretty good enclosure as some cheap enclosures can hamper it more.
Now with Thunderbolt 4 enclosures they are 40 Gbps enclosures but way more money. If you take 40 Gbps and divide by 8 on paper the max you can get out of those are 5,000 MB/s but of course on paper it is more like 3,000 MB/s after overhead and some of the best Thunderbolt enclosures can only get about 2,800 MB/s.
Yes, if you put these SSDs directly on the motherboard of a computer they will be faster since they don't have all the overhead of the cables and enclosure. But, that is just the reality of using enclosures and if you can get 800 MB/s on a 10 Gbps enclosure that is good and if you can get 2,800 MB/s on a Thunderbolt enclosure that is also good. I hope that helps.
This is exactly what I’m looking for
Thanks for watching.
But how does it compare to the KLEVV CRAS C910 which is the same price?
Not sure.
Love your site! I cannot tell you how much you have helped and educated me! Thank. you! Question, I currently have a Late 2013 Imac and planning to upgrade to a Mac mini M2, but need to replace my Time Machine drive on current Mac and am wondering if this NVMe would even work on my current system? I will definitely use this with my new Mac mini when I purchase it.
Thanks for the nice words and for watching. It should work as long as the enclosure cable is compatible with the 2013 computer. I guess you could run into a compatibility issue on a case by case basis but I have used these drives on older systems. If you pick a drive maybe read the comments to see if others have had success with using it on an older system.
can you boot the Mac from these drives ?.
Yes, but I have not tested that to see how well it works. I have been booting my 2017 iMac 27" off an external SSD for 4 years now and it works perfect. I just have not tried that with M1 models yet but may do a video on that sooner or later to update it.
@@craigneidel that would be an awesome video....compare m1 or m2 OS X performance with an external enclosure vs the built in stock ssd.....
@@ziggy8757 maybe in the future
@@craigneidel I actually have done this, but with a 1Tb only. It was done using a Sabrent enclosure and a Sabrent drive (PCi4x4). The main reason for it was to actually see how fast this boots and here is the thing. The boot time was quite a bit longer, almost 13 seconds. But once MacOS was loaded there was very little difference on the "feel" side of things. Safari opened just as fast, or maybe half a second slower. So, in a pinch, especially if you want to try out a beta version of MacOS, it is an alternative. I would however have to be a patient man to work with large files. Like Craig is mentioning: be aware of extra cheap enclosures, a good enclosure would cost you at least 20 USD (I am in Canada, so my prices are different, availability too). More than anything make sure that if you purchase a USB-c 3.2 enclosure that you use the cable that came with the enclosure. I have also tested a USB4 enclosure with the same drive and the speed was significantly better, so I would consider that an even better option, be it very expensive on the enclosure side. I paid CAD 170-ish for mine about 8 months ago. And boy does that thing get toasty. The USB4 enclosure, which I still use, is from Orico. I have seen cheaper brands appear, and I will order one of them with a newer 2Tb drive. For Canada the price would be around CAD $350 for such a set, or with the cheaper enclosure around 300. It is fascinating where we have landed since I started using computers 48 years ago - I just love it.
Thank You
Thanks for watching
@craigneidel What cable are you using? Again thanks for the suggestions on the Acasis enclosure as it has been treating me well but now I also need a cheaper 2TB option for a time machine backup for a M1 MBA and this looks like a great one.
Nekteck Thunderbolt 3 Cable - amzn.to/3wzUkTz - that is the cable but this isn't Thunderbolt so don't need that. It comes with that short cable that looks like a loop but if you need a longer cable you can use any 10 Gbps usb-c cable.
@@craigneidel Just build two of these and the speeds are pretty fine and as you said, super rugged (Tests in Blackmagic: steady at W:905+ MB/s, R:895+/- MB/s).
@@reverieretreat168 thanks for testing
So i do not need to worry about it not having dram unless i want to run a os from the drive.
The cheapest 2tb drive i can find in my country is seagate Barracuda. Im thinking of using it for video editing and video storage. Hopefully it works out.
Yes, I would try it and see how it works out for you. You can always return it if it doesn't work out for you.
The JS600 is $168 AUD on your link, nowhere near your $79 USD. The exchange rate is not that large
Prices change of course and this is an older video. Surely the price won't be the same.
How reliable are NVME's in terms of how many times you could write stuff into it before failing?
Many are reliable for 300 or 600 TB data written. So if you write 10 GB per day it's well over 15 years (sometimes way more - 30+ years if you only write 10 GB per day) before you would have any issues. But, as we know some other items can break on all hard drives so this is just a reliability metric they use.
It lasted me over half a year
@@kingzombie951 Exactly. Cheap crap.
It should last you like 15 years or so maybe that's to much. But a good drive will last a long time. My dad still has his old drives from his first computer and they still work. Just an example of how long they should last. I'm talking computers from 80s could be some other date. But just saying there really old.
Will this work on the Mac M2 mini
Yes. For sure
can make a good storage device for transferring pics and videos from my phone directly. Would be more reliable than my thumbdrive
It should be but it depends on the phone and the drive you put in the enclosure also.
Hi!
Great video!
Will mvme ssd drive work with android?
It's a standard enclosure do it just depends on how you format the drive but I assume it would. I would check out Amazon page and search the questions as it should be in there to be sure. Thanks for watching.
@Craig Neidel basically i am trying to build a 2t ssd so i could backup pictures from my android phone so any help would be awesome.
Forgot with out braking the bank
I think it should work for that and good luck. I would just check the Amazon page first down in the questions section but don't see why it would not work.
Hello: Of the SSDs you tested, which brand is the most stable and how is the read/write speed and stability of the 990PRO?
Samsung are always good products but I have had success with may of the products I have tested. I think they are getting very good overall. The WD have been solid and even the Leven budget SSDs have performed well for me with no failures. But I'm only one person so it's hard to know the overall quality of individual SSDs based off just my use. I wish I had a better answer but in the end I would be lying if I told you I knew the best drives since I use about 50 different ones per year and actually have not had one fail yet. I know one will eventually but so far so good.
So apparently it gets speeds of 24MB/s Write/Read on a 2011 MacBook Pro. 😢 Usb-C to Usb-A cable.
I didn't test it on such an older system but on the 2011 it uses the very slow USB format so I'm guessing that would be correct.
Thanks! I'm putting it in a cheap laptop
Good luck with everything.
@@craigneidelGoing to put the old SSD in an encloser. What format do you suggest using for a Windows only user.
800mb? this ssd is rating at 5,000 MB, what a waste
Funny, yes but it's an external 10 Gbps enclosure. So that is all you can get on those. If you want to get a $130 Thunderbolt enclosure you would get closer to 3,000 MB/s but it comes down to cost.
Lol nope, not worth it. Tried one on a steamdeck and the thing didn't even boot
I'm a Mac channel and they do work great with what I showed in my video. Not sure about steamdeck as I didn't test on that.
Bad product.. Fails not long after use.
I have not had any issues with this and have 4 of them but it's possible things can fail for sure.
@@craigneidel Thanks for your response. Gives me a chance to compliment you on your channel. Your approach is very unique and geared toward people like me who want the latest and greatest, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get it. I just bought a maxed out 2017 iMac because of you. I needed it for one specific task, Photoshop. I discovered I didn't need a $2500 Mac Studio, which is a great machine, but for Photoshop, the $850 iMac off Ebay with the upgraded CPU and GPU and full compliment of ram was more than enough. You saved me a lot of money and I love my new old machine!
Thanks for the nice words and the feedback. Yes, I still use my 2017 iMac (27") for most of my video edits and I have no issues. I know the M1 and M2 can be faster but for my needs the screen on the iMac is more important for sure. I'm glad it worked out good for you. Thanks.
@@craigneideldo it work well on ps5 ???
