    I have 2 equal files, raw from Black and Xavc from A7S3. And the truth is Blackmagic has MUCH better dynamic range, much better colors and overall image

      Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always great to hear different perspectives. The Blackmagic definitely has a strong reputation for its dynamic range and color science, which makes it a favorite among many filmmakers. The A7SIII, on the other hand, shines in low light and offers fantastic flexibility with its autofocus and video capabilities. Both have their strengths, so it really comes down to what specific features are most important for your projects.
      Out of curiosity, what kind of projects do you typically work on, and how do these cameras fit into your workflow?

      I’m curious to know what you rated the a7siii at. If it was 800EI then there would have been much more to gain if you shot it at 1600-2000EI.
      Let’s not forget about the 16bit Raw through the Atomos recorder.
      Think it would have been good to match the colours identically since you were talking about cine match and intern making it harder for us to guess the the difference could have shown us the colour difference at the end of the guess test.

    The dynamic range seems quite noticeable, BMCC wins there easily. Actually found the Sony's footage sharper, but then again I am looking at this through RUclips's compression lens. Wish BMCC had better autofocus and low light performance for real world scenarios and independent video makers.

    Great video. I prefer the old Sony a7S3. I bought the new cinema 6K about a year ago when it came out and although some of it I liked. I found the image kind of crunchy and the colors have like an orange tint to them that is impossible to grade. You cannot get a clean red out of it. It always looks a little orange. And if you do tweaks with certain luts to get an accurate red color, you mess up all the other colors. I really found that the look is kind of similar to the Sony, and it isn’t worth having an additional camera that doesn’t have auto focus where you’re not really gaining anything but internal raw. But at the end, the image is really kind of a draw between the two. I sold all my blackmagic cameras. I’m overwhelmed by the amount of equipment I have, and the older I get even though there’s certain drawbacks with some equipment, I rather use minimum amount. I know with my Sony’s. I can use the auto focus lenses or I can use cinema lenses and get a pretty nice look.Unless you’re shooting with Alexa, they all pretty much look the same.

    Nice video man. Guessed from the jump that Cam B was the full frame, and it’s the one I preferred. The fuller colors on the skin were the dead giveaway. But you did a great job matching them together.

    I love my A7siii but I miss BRAW and Blackmagic colors so much. Truth be told though, the A7siii can match the BMPCC 6K FF colors with work and is just an overall more versatile tool. I just wish I worked on more projects that required a more cinematic workflow where reliable autofocus wasn’t such a big deal to me.

      Mostly triathlon these days. The A7siii gives me cinematic interview footage when I need it but it’s also light and has great IBIS for motorcycle work and it also helps me catch night-time action. Just a jack of all trades. As soon as a Blackmagic camera has some reliable and sticky autofocus, I’m back for life.

    I have a7iv (similar to a7s3) and bmccff and the image is much better on the bm - less digital, colour science is much better and you don’t need to worry about wb as it’s RAW. Sony is doing post automatic noise reduction so it looks videoy

    @AskJoe 4 месяца назад +1

    I always prefer the colors on Blackmagic cameras, especially compared to Sony's. The big price drop made grabbing one a no brainer. Although you can eventually fiddle with settings, I just plain love the Blackmagic color right from the camera. All it takes is one of the base LUTs like Extended Video and you're good to go. Besides the color there's a softness that's a bit more subtle. It's sharp, but at the same time, soft using the default settings. Lastly, there is simply no better menu system than Blackmagic's. My only complaint is that you can't point the screen at yourself for self-shooting.

  • @vladgoth

    Excellent comparison, which clearly shows image differences between the two cameras. I definitely prefer BMCC mainly because of better colours. I think that because of just image quality, RAW option and price BMCC 6K wins for all projects where you don't need extreme low light capability, autofocus and IBIS.

    To be honest a lot of people say that BM has a better colour science etc. but to me, based on what I see in comparisons, Sony is not worse in my opinion, it’s just more neutral and can be easily tuned to be more punchy like BM.
    I use CamMackey LUTs in DaVinci and it always gives me more richer and deeper colours than standard ways to grade SLog and better than Phantom LUTs in my opinion.

    • @walmartpimp2
      @walmartpimp2 18 дней назад

      @@phrasalsyntax Yeah, because you can always use a dehancer plugin to make mirrorless look like film (Why would someone want to make their digital image look like an obsolete technology is beyond me, but whatever floats your boat), but can you take a Blackmagic and make it look sterile, sharp and neutral? Cause there's plenty of things that are shot where people expect clarity and sharpness like: news, or comedy, or xxx, etc...

    Coming from bmd myself and moving to the fx3 aka a7s3, definitely the c6k looks more filmic and richer in tonality...something I always told myself when I went to sony, is that below middle grey it is so desaturated and always asked myself if its not how sony fix their horrible greenish skin tones they suffered from before? The c6k seems to have better lattitude in the shadows and its why we think it has better dynamic range but it does not..I really need to find an atomos to try out the RAW from the fx3(since the denoiser is not working there) and maybe we dont even need to have a 2nd c6k body to pull off filmic images. 😌

    The look of Sony was better in my eyes. However, this result is most likely because you are not yet familiar with the color grading of BMCC 6K. I used to be a Sony user, and now I use Panasonic and have BMCC 6K FF. In fact, BMCC shows its true value the more you color grade it. In my experience, Panasonic's colors are clearly better than Sony's, and Blackmagic is even better than Panasonic's. When doing color grading, I often experienced that Sony no longer does color grading naturally at some point. Sony requires a difficult and arduous process to create the look and skin tone I want, and requires a lot of fine tuning and time. Despite such efforts, there are still limitations that are difficult to overcome. Panasonic is much easier and Blackmagic often gives satisfactory results with just a few clicks. I also use cinematch often, but I am curious about which camera you matched Cinematch to. The results will be different depending on the target camera.

    Claimed stops score is 15 to 13.5. 12.4 on cine d is the real score and 11 7 should be close for the bm as that was the cine d score for the pocket 6k which claims the about same Dr as the full frame. Komodo scored 12.7 and the raptor had a true 13 plus, 14 with recovery. Only arri tops that with a true 15, though they claim 17 plus.
    Stop saying "12 bit" too because 12bit log and 12bit linear is apples to oranges. 12bit log is practically 16bit linear so lumping it in with the raw capability of the s1h, fs7, sigma fp, ect is full out wrong. 12bit raw is arri raw, braw, pro res raw but only if you can feed it 16 bits.
