I sold the 2007 Yamaha V-Max at a loss. Today I'm going over how much I paid for it and how much I sold it for. For the record, I'm a big fan of the Yamaha V-Max and am glad I got the opportunity to try it out. These videos aren't to wine or complain; rather, to help others learn from my mistakes when it comes to buying used motorcycles.

Just picked up my 96 Vmax near the begining of the pandemic: very good condition, new tires and 23k miles. I felt wonderful about the purchase seeing it came from a engineering type with a machine shop in his basement. At $3400 I couldn't be happier to finally own my dream bike from my teenage years. No remorse for me....

    Dude, $10-15 for fork seals.
$5 for fork oil or ATF.
Drop the wheel, remove the calipers.
Remove the fork legs, disassemble with no specialist tools, reassemble with new stuff.
Not difficult, a morning's work max.
Advertise as with "new fork seals and fresh oil", instead of "needs"....
    Regards,

It's funny how you say the worst part of the whole deal is you paid too much for the bike, and you knew it. So that is your fault, you should not have paid that much for it, with the problems it had, nobody is to blame for that but you.
You should have offered him less, and if he said no, walk away from the deal, it's that simple. I have never seen a video of a guy saying it was a bad deal, after admitting he paid too much for the bike. If it is a bad deal, and you know it, do not make the deal, walk away, and buy a different bike from someone else.

I paid $5K for my 2000. Zero issues. 16000 miles. I picked it up in Grants Pass Utah and Rode it back to Tucson in January (yes it rained and snowed on me)! I have absolutely no regrets. This beast is the best bike I’ve ever owned and I’m not even interested in what I can get for it now.

The Vmax is like a hot rod. Wrenching/modifying it is half the fun! You don't buy a monster hot rod because it handles great... although if you want it to, you upgrade the suspension brace the frame change the wheels and ouallah! it handles great...

I bought and sold 2 Vmaxes for a profit. The best one hadn't ran in 3 years and wouldn't start. I put fresh gas in, cleaned the carbs and it fired right up and ran perfectly. I ended up making 2k on the bike and only owned it for 3 weeks. Same color scheme as yours but a 2007. The best way to make money on these is finding the die hard riders who grew up watching these stoplight race in the 80s!

Buyer must be happy. Leak on the fork is one gasket tahat cost few bucks. I had replaced mine 3 or 4 times during year service due to bump in fork I have damaging gasket overtime. Kill switch not an issue. Just take it apart check wires an see. Just a contact most probably. Fixed my lights switch even I never seen it apart. Oli leaking seems more serious but I woul bet again on some gasket worth a few bucks. You should take it to the service than stick to org. price.
For comparison I bought mine over 13 years ago with +/- 25000 km on it, crashed and repaired, lightly tuned for 5000€ and still love it. Thinking to swap for MT01 but never decided completely. This bike produces best freaking exhaust sound I ever heared on any bike period.

Why didn’t you put some work into it to increase sale value. Last time I bought fork seals they were 19 dollars for the set. The switch was probably a dirty contact! Oil leak; could be as simple as loose oil filter. Seriously why take a 1k hit?

  • @makemyday1477
    @makemyday1477 4 года назад +2

Ouch! Oh well it happens. Chalk it up to experience and that is worth something. You should have called around to see how much the repairs would be and then take that off the cost. You may not have lost as much because the repairs wouldn’t have been $1k I wouldn’t think, maybe $400.00 the kill switch is just a loose wire and the seals aren’t that expensive even at the dealership. But you did make some cash from the vids so it’s a cost of doing business and you get to take the loss off your taxes at the end of the year. You’ll get it back next time.

  • @tangledline

Really depends on the buyer. The exhaust makes a difference and welp...fork seals are normal wear and tear unless someone is doing wheelies and don't know how to bring it down. I don't wheelie my max (or anything anymore actually) squids have really upped the laws on riders even cruising with just 1 hand in some states. If you are a flipper like me-get a list of what to look at and do some research on the common issues...you got lucky you didnt get the 2nd gear loss at the battery drainer...lol.

Man I hate to say it but I just about 6 hours ago bought a VMAX it has always been that one bike that I have wanted since they came out but just never had the chance so I have had dozens of KAWASAKI KZs and LTDs from 650s to 1100s and I loved every one they are a great bike. Ok so I just got home with my VMAX a couple hours ago I finally had a minute to sit down. So I checked my mail on most of my pages and the very first video was about a guy that buys bikes and fixes them online so wé can see them and the bike he got looked great but it had the front tubes leaking and had a couple drops of oil on the floor and the kill switch didn't work. I put mine in the garage and the exact same things happened but I turned it back on and the kill switch worked. I just thought it was a very strange time for the videos to show up. But so far I put about 50 miles on it today and it rode great I'm gonna fix those few things and hopefully the bike will be everything I always wanted.

I think your biggest mistake is not realizing that the buyers who normally bought the V-Max and loved it immensely, have pretty much aged out of motorcycling. Simply put, there aren’t a lot of people left who want the bike. Then, you paid wayyyyy too much for it cuz you were awestruck by its primitive performance numbers and legend folklore. Live and learn and take someone with you when buying bikes, who actually knows a little about bikes, and not just how to wheelie them. 👍🏻
