Not sure why you just threw the yellow traveler wire into the box. That wire, while not being used in a single pole application, is still electrically active and you have not marretted it to prevent electrical shorting. That wire touches anything to ground in your outlet box, and you have a ruined switch and electrical fault. Not good installation procedure here.
