I put one in a wet spot with my bucket a couple weeks ago on the edge of cover. It’s spring fed.And they are using it.Their is a large creek about 200 yards away.
Hey Jeff, I love your videos. I think I've watched all your waterhole videos, and I dont believe you've discussed how you like to orientate the oval tanks to your treestand to help increase the likelihood of a broadside shot and if you have a preference to how it's oriented to the trail if it's parallel or perpendicular. Thanks for all your videos. Good luck and take care.
Hi Jeff, thank you! Honestly, most of the time I am using the terrain to dictate. For example if we have a slight elevation change I will take the wide side into the ridge to catch more rain water. They typically come in from the flat side, or on the ends of the flat side of the elevation. I now use mostly 300 gallon tanks and they are 63x69" ...so almost "round". In that case it doesn't matter. What you really see the most is them coming in the way the deer movement goes thru the area. For example on a bench they will approach and leave on the bench, mostly approaching on 1 of those 2 ends regardless of which side of the tank it is. I believe when the tanks are at least 100-150 they have enough room to stick their head in from any side so that's what we see. I could give some advice to sound smart and say, "position it this way because deer always do this and you can get a shot"...but from all of the years I would say the major determinations for where they enter to drink are where it's flat, and from the direction the deer flow is naturally thru the area. Make sure to always have a mock scrape hanging nearby and you will have multiple stopping points to shoot them at 😊
I added a 100 gallon water hole this past spring. Deer found it that night. No bucks hitting it yet, but I don't get bigger bucks until usually September. Hopefully they find it soon
How far away does a waterhole need to be minimum? I have a small parcel and want to put one in 50 yds from food plot, it would be separated from plot by thick brush.
I always wonder if deer would even use one if I put it on my parcel. I already have two creeks and a pond. I hear they like these better though. Maybe I'll try it.
My question is why do I have to use a water trough vs just digging a hole and filling with water especially when it's in a spot where water runs into the hole naturally when it rains?
I have a nice low laying spot that is always a little damp and wet in the spring. It also happens to be on the edge of a clover. Is it ok if it’s on the edge near perceived cover?
Hey Jeff, been watching your videos for a long time and just realized something...it seems as though you film your hunts because you have footage mixed in as "B roll" but I don't think I've ever seen your full hunts...do you post them somewhere else? Would be interested to see them. Thanks
Jeff, I have 80 acres down in Arkansas. I would love to pay you for your services to help me begin a management plan and to really take a scalpel to growing my deer herd.
Might be a stupid question, but would you consider a stream or small creek a good water hole source. My hunting area is either a food source next to a bedding area (I don't have permission to hunt the bedding area) or a small wooded area that has a stream running through it. It's between two food sources.
Planning for Switch Grass planting for next year. Is frost seeding needed anymore since seed your selling is almost 80% soft seed? Thus can plant in april, may, or june?
Hi Jeff, i am wondering if hunting bow only on my new mid Michigan farm would help our odds of being the herd influencer & helping young bucks get older... Huge thanks for all your hard work keeping us informed, we appreciate you!!!
I am not Jeff, but I believe in order to be a herd influencer and help the bucks get to an older age class is to have the property set up with the right habitat and plenty of food. You have to have the bedding and food set up to be able to access hunt and exit the property without the deer or minimum amount of deer knowing you are there. Trigger control is a big one. If you shoot the bucks before they get to the age class you are looking for,you will never have older deer.
Use the type of water hole Jeff uses trust me. I tried to be cheap and use one of those IBC tanks. Plenty of gallons but it's so thin when the deer try to drink from it the tank wants to collapse and the ground wants to give out. Save yourself the time and headache. Just buy a trough.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes sir. I'm going to pull them up after this season and install two 300 gallon troughs in their place on my little 40 acre setup.
@@gerjerryxiongyeah. I've tried to use the metal frame the IBC tanks come in and it doesn't help. You'd have to use a solid metal plate all the way to the ground or something like that. Not worth the time or money.
Jeff I need some advice, I put glyphosate on my food plot early august and couldn’t get it tilled. I put brassicas and plot boost but nothings coming up. Should I put rye to just get something?
Shoot, just put my waterhole next to the Soy field the farmer has growing.. It's close to deer trails and its dry, no water around for 800m. Wish I would have seen this first
Scummy water is always preferred by deer! Also they don't go out of their way much to hit water, as they don't have to actually drink water to survive. As long as the movement is dry from bedding to feeding...that's all that matters.
This is some epic hunting advice, I watch every episode.
Thank you that is great to hear!
Jeff when we used to have horses we would add electrolytes to the water trough. Have you ever thought about this on waterholes? Thoughts?

Nice D!
My lease has natural water hole and a nice 8 pointer is bedding right next to it, left his sheds there too
Love all the information you share Jeff.i we appreciate all you do!
Thanks a lot Mike that means a lot to me!

I could see a water hole 🕳️ for sale on the site! (Along with assorted items (hinge tool, packer, seed spreader etc)
Amen to that Kurt!

Big job gotta stick with my pond. Thanks Jeff

I would like to know the answer to this question also

Could I put a watering hole towards the edge of a grassland like we have here in Kansas?
Hey Jeff is there a certain distance you set the water hole from your mock scrap. Excellent video Jeff thank you
Awesome content as always! Thank you!
Great advice, thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks William you are very welcome!
What do you do with your water holes in the with does the frozen water crack the tank?

Are you doing anything to try and keep waterholes from freezing or is there anything we can do ???

Yes, water is a good water source.
Hey jeff, my property is overun with bears, what are the odds theres even any deer on the 100 acre parcel?

How many waterholes would you put in a 40 acre parcel?
Anywhere from 1 to 3 if dry...

We've learned the hard way over the last 20 years of deer waterhole use...so many different ways, lol
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes sir. I'm going to pull them up after this season and install two 300 gallon troughs in their place on my little 40 acre setup.
I use pond liners about 40 to 50 dollars a piece. Cheap and effective.
Are you talking about the sides caving in? If so, would a frame help it stay sturdy?

I would definitely do that...heavy rye after labor Day, if the seed can reach the soil

Y’all don’t have streams or ponds around ? Water everywhere. Not sure a scummy water tank would draw anything here in the northeast
I live in ny. They work great , puts the deer where you want them.

Putting the limb in is a good idea to keep small creatures from drowning and fouling your hole.
Amen! A critter stick...
Looks like ya found some rocks while digging that hole😅
Just a couple, ha
First!
I think so?
Close 👍 well done!

Yep!
