  • Our second day cruising Georgian Bay leads us through the Small Boat Channel to Parry Sound! Parry Sound is the largest city in this area of the Great Loop, and we need to provision. We cruise through very narrow and deep rocky channels before hitting a massive rain storm.
    Thanks for watching!
    Cheers from the Loop,
    Jennifer and Elliot

    ABOUT US
    Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
    The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
    Thank you for following us along our journey!

    I grew up in this area and always felt like there was nowhere else quite like it. The bay (and Killbear) was everything to me. We recently moved back and I cannot get enough of the water. My daughter and I frequently go for boat rides between Parry Sound and Sans Souci, or the other way out past Killbear to Franklin Island. We also go camping at Killbear every chance we get - it's so big and beautiful with so many beaches and trails to explore.

    It is delightful watching your experiences within my home waters. As a long time Georgian Bay sailor I can say that the underwater topography is the same as the above water topography so rapidly increasing depths or shallows are to be expected.

      I'm from Severn Sound at the south end of the bay, and the bottom there changes just as suddenly and unpredictably. There are spots a mile from shore where you're suddenly looking down at huge rocks through a foot of water, and places where you can drive a pickup a quarter mile from shore without getting the brakes wet when the lake's low.

    I know you have a paddleboard, but Jen's Canadian indpired idea of getter a canoe or Kayak. If course you're not in Canada anymore but my advice is to let the Canadian spirit of an idea become a reality soon with a ~16' canoe . That way you could both enjoy padeling together and Ollie would love it too. It'd be a great option for exploring small waters nearby or getting out and excercing with the spirit of Canada within your, even if you're in a horrid place like Florida. 😅

    I have a beef with Jen. Every video you guys end a video with Jen cooking something. It looks so good I have hunger pains lol. Ollie, how come you don't weigh 300 lbs. Must have a tape worm or something.
    Too bad you didn't go a few miles to Franklin Island to Regatta bay. Totally protected and hop in your tender and went to Snug Harbor and had a great fish dinner at Gilleys. right beside the government dock. Then scoot around to the west side of Franklin and there is a little bay with a real narrow entrance and hard to see, but you can get 50 footers in. but boy is beautiful and has its own little island in its middle. I'm surprised no one mentioned to you about it.
    But again another great video.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Год назад

      Haha thanks, Mike! Must be... We haven't heard of Snug Harbor and Gilleys - will have to add that to the list next time. We did hear about Franklin Island and the narrow Western entrance and it was an option for the next cruise, but we are all students of the weather and it didn't quite work out for this trip.

    • @mikepech6822
      @mikepech6822 Год назад

      @@SchoandJo The western bay is beautiful. Downfall is the weather. Don't have any time schedules. When you exit, you're in the open bay. Sometimes 6 to 12 waves. But Regatta is on the inner channel and totally safe. Weather permitted, see it with your tender. It's worth seeing.

    • @SchoandJo

    I’ve been following you since you hit the Erie Canal. I love that the last two videos have posted close together. What else amazes me is that you only spent two days in the area I know so well… San Souci Island to Kilbear. (Btw, you pronounce Souci the Italian way, with the c making a ch sound. San Souci is French, so the c should be pronounced with an s sound.

    I was wondering if you could share some details of the tablet you're using on the fly bridge? We just bought a 35' trawler that's in need of more navigation equipment.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Год назад +1

      Absolutely! We use an iPad, specifically this is a 12 in iPad pro, and it's loaded with Navionics and Aqua Maps, although we mainly use Navionics. Their are a few downsides to this approach,
      1. Power - this type of iPad needed to be plugged into 120 while navigating
      2. Water - it wasn't water proof so since we didn't have an enclosure we had to work around that
      3. Sunlight & Heat - Rarely (only happened 3-4 times) if the sun was directly on the iPad for an extended period we had to move it to the other side otherwise it'd overheat
      All this being said, we are happy with how it worked for us since we use the iPad for other things. It was also extremely easy to update maps, store our routes, and operate it while cruising! Having a large screen was very nice too.

    What are the markers on shore indicating? They look like channel markers but are on shore.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Год назад

      We're not sure... There are quite a few different variations of markers in this video, even considering ones that are on shore and not. The ones that looked like channel markers but were on shore, we took as channel markers. However, in the ICW you could cruise right next to the poles of most markers but here considering it's on land we just stayed in the center of the channel.

    I realize you filmed this a long time ago....but did no one correct you somewhere along the route....its NOT "The Georgian Bay".....its just "Georgian Bay"......just like you wouldn't call it the "The Lake Ontario" or "The Lake Huron"

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Год назад

      No one said anything along the route. We are calling it Georgian Bay now, but back then we thought of it like the ocean. We'd often say "the Atlantic Ocean", and since Georgian is the name of the bay we would call it the Georgian Bay. Without the "the" seems more like an adjective than a name, but we've been saying it differently since releasing these videos 💪
