Another one of the great girl groups from the 50's-60's. They had a lot of great songs such as "I Met Him On A Sunday", "Tonight's The Night", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Soldier Boy", "Boys", "Mama Said", "Baby It's You", "Foolish Little Girl" etc.
@@backgroundmusik Have you tried going on RUclips and putting the name of the group or person or the name of the song. If you haven't , try it and see if you can get them.
"Mama Said," (1961) Billboard #4 and US Hot R&B#2, was the 3rd consecutive top-5 charting hit for the quartet, following "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "Dedicated to The One I Love." In 1962 their song "Soldier Boy" went to #1 on Billboard's top 100. Shirley Alston Reeves AKA Sirley Owens was the lead singer for the Shirelles. They were 4 teenage girls from New Jersey and were good friends with Dion Warwick who also sang backup with them too on some songs. Dion Warwick also is a Jersey girl. Yes, Mel they got their name from their lead singer... Shirley Alston Reeves aka Shirley Owens.
That is not true their name did not come from Shirley's name they made it up in a taxie cab sounding like the Chantels name don't know where you got your info
Sweet! The Shirelles "Mama Said" 1961. Also check out "Foolish Little Girl" and "Dedicated To The One I Love" by The Shirelles. When it comes to the so-called "girl groups" of the sixties, check out more from The Supremes "Come See About Me", "You Can't Hurry Love", and "Stop! In The Name Of Love"; Mary Wells "My Guy"; The Marvelettes "Please Mr. Postman" and "Don't Mess With Bill"; The Ronettes "Baby, I Love You"; The Chiffons "He's So Fine" and "One Fine Day"; The Crystals "Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)"; Aretha Franklin "Chain of Fools", "Soulville", "Spanish Harlem"; Little Eva "The Loco-motion"; Barbara Lewis "Hello Stranger" and "Baby, I'm Yours"; The Shangri-Las "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)"; The Angels "My Boyfriend's Back"; The Ikettes "I'm Blue (The Gong Gong Song)"; Betty Everett "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)"; Carla Thomas "B-A-B-Y"; Tina Turner "River Deep, Mountain High"; Dee Dee Sharp "Mashed Potato Time"; Fontella Bass "Rescue Me"; The Elgins "Heaven Must Have Sent You"; The Sapphires "Who Do You Love"; Bettye Swann "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye"; Maureen Gray "Crazy Over You"; Erma Franklin "Piece of My Heart"; Gloria Jones "Tainted Love"; Irma Thomas "Time Is On My Side"; Brenda & The Tabulations "When You're Gone"; Lulu "To Sir with Love"; Rosie & The Originals "Angel Baby"; etc. etc.
I was 13 when the Shirelles became famous, 1962. I loved every song they put out there, same time Frankie Valli’s “ Sherry Baby “ became a hit. Both groups had multiple hits on the radio that summer, so good!
Keep these "Classics" coming. There's always good to great songs in all genres and generations of music. But I feel you have found out then great songs are good in any generation. I mentioned that you should have your own sock hop because you feel you missed out on those great doo-wop songs and the girl groups. But I love growing up in that era.
Definitely mid 60s. Shirley Ellis had such a great voice. Also the 60s had the most great timeless songs. The ORLONS from Philly same time had 3 great songs. South Street, Don't Hang Up and Wahtusi Appreciate if you would react to one.
As has already been mentioned, it was 1961. But this Shirley is not Shirley Ellis. She might be interesting to explore, too - The Nitty Gritty, and The Name Game.
Love The Shirelles! So many wonderful songs with beautiful harmonies. I sang this to myself growing up and then to my girls when I became the Mama! And the first time I saw my now husband was across a crowded room! No kidding. I worked with his sister and she talked about him, also telling me my jokes sounded just like her brother! 😹 Yet seeing him for the first time ( he looked like his father's side rather than his sister who favors their mother's side and was ruggedly handsome!) it was as if God tapped me on the shoulder! Call it love at first sight or call it anything you like but I knew that we could share a future. 40 years later guess My Mama told me there would be days like this! 😽💋🎶
The Chantels with lead singer Arlene Smith was one of the first great girl groups from back then. Arlene's voice singing Maybe is amazing. Check it out
The Chantels have been credited with being the first real all-female Doo-Wop group. "Maybe" is absolutely 💯% 🔥 and one of my favorite songs of that era.
That saying is still going around the world still today. Takes me back to my young days. My teen days. Love them love me some Diana Ross. Donna summers. Tina tuner. Oh my I loved her. Great song guys.
Yes, Mama did tell us, didn't she? PLEASE react to Dedicated to the one I lone, Soldier Boy and Baby It's You. There are others too. I have this on my 45 record
This reminded me of an old sort of sad song (same era) called "You Can Never Go Home Anymore," by Shangris-Las. I'd love to see your reaction to that one.
I was born in 1984 but my grandparents gave me a great love of the music they grew up with. I think you both will absolutely love "Lovers Concerto" by The Toys
I met the Shirelles in 1963 when my mom and I moved to SF. We stayed in a hotel in the Fillmore. A guy there knew them and took us to meet them. I was 11 and loved them. Will never forget how nice they were.
❤️🥰❤️ Hello S & M SQUAD, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!! ☃️❄️🎄⭐️ I love, “Mama said, ya ya, Mama said, yay a . . . “ ⭐️ I’m happy you liked this song, Amanda I agree with Shawn, the background singers were very strong and awesome!!! ⭐️ ❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M SQUAD IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🥰❤️
Well said, you two- everyone should do more listening to their mama! The Shirelles were one of the quintessential early 60's girl groups from Passaic NJ. You will love their other 1962 #1 hit, "Soldier Boy" if you give it a listen. The others as listed in the comments are also great.
Thank you for acknowleging where the girls were from. My hometown of Passaic, NJ. Fran Greeberg's daughter, a student at Passaic High School listened to them singing in the Passaic High School chior and demanded her mom audition them for Fran's record company. The rest is history!
Fran Greenburg, of Passaic, NJ ran a record company, Scepter Records. Her daughter went to Passaic High School in NJ where I also went to school only 10 years later. The daughter said to her mom, you must hear these girls that sing in our chorus. Fran listened and said they were too good not to sign to her record company. The rest is history. There is a street in Passaic named after them. Love my home girls for Passaic!
Great to note lots of mentions for Jan Radley's Mama Didn't Lie. Great record, and she had a very beautiful voice. But I want to digress here for a reason - it's so much fun to watch you guys when a song goes in a direction no one would expect. I'm so glad y'all have made so many great discoveries. Mel, you have a lovely voice by the way. I truly appreciate that y'all have followed some of my other suggestions like listening to the great and gone too soon, "Gentleman" Jim Reeves. I want to introduce y'all to an essential and important aspect of country music. It began with Jimmy Rodgers. Then, later, the late great Charley Pride who did not just sing great hit country music but is described as being Country Music. The Shirelles from Passaic N.J. in 1957 sang R&B/Doo-wop, soul (aka the Poquellos, Shirley and the Shirelles) sign to Tirara Records first hit : "I Met Him On A Sunday "Then sign to Decca Records in 1958 after a set back, then sign to Scepter Records: other hits "TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT","WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW ".They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1996) Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004.
I know that a lot of people rate Diana Ross & The Supremes as the cream of the crop of the 60's but it's my opinion that The Shirelles were the superior group. Shirley Alston Reeves had a beautiful voice.

Baby It's You is one of my favourites though I only discovered it from The Beatles cover version on one of their early albums
Thank you Baby It's You, definitely they need to play !!!!!! and This is dedicated to the one I love, another jam by them !!!!!
A lot of these songs I've loved but would never know how to look up.

I grew up listening to oldies and even now at 42 this song goes through my head and I end up singing it.
You two have old souls... Thanks for the flashbacks... And making them so relevant today...
The Shirelles were trend-setters. They bridged the Doo Wop era to the rock and R&B songs of the later '60s.

Please do Dooms Day by the Shirelles. It's my favorite.
